Which camp are you in if Harbaugh leaves?

Submitted by MichiganiaMan on January 14th, 2024 at 2:58 PM

With day that passes w/o the announcement of an extension, I grow more convinced that Coach Harbaugh is heading back to the NFL. I’m guessing that the fanbase will separate along these fault lines:

1) Those who say Harbaugh was compelled to scratch the NFL itch, and he simply couldn’t resist that any longer. Vs…

2) Those who turn their ire toward Warde, believing he failed to protect and elevate Michigan football and should be pushed out.

My question: Which of these camps would you see yourself falling into?

There are other camps:  dont want to mess w ncaa anymore, go out on top, succession planning, new challenges.  It doesnt have to be spite or administrative incompetence.

More camp 1. He did what we needed him to do. We have a man in waiting. You owe us nothing Jim. Pursue you dream. If that means staying, God Bless you. If that means going, you have my undying support.

I suspect lawyers and show clause phrasing will be the biggest reason on the one side.

I mean - I don’t think it’s Ward at all at this point, and it would more likely be the need to win both.

I am in the camp that Harbaugh's initial mission was to bring Michigan a national championship. He did it!!

Harbaugh should now be able to do whatever his heart desires with our full support. I hope that it's to stay at Michigan where he is beloved and a legend. That sounds like a great life.

If it's elsewhere because of his competitive nature, I'm ok with that.

Mostly 1. While I think Warde hasn't been his biggest backer at times, I'm not buying all of the negativity. Had JH not just won 3 B1Gs in a row, 3 wins over Ohio, and the national title, I'd be more inclined to throw Warde some more shade.

JH has earned the right to shop around. If he leaves, he'll have left this program in tremendous straits.

The culture is so strong right now. I'd promote Sherrone. Go and try to hire David Shaw as co-OC (and promote Hart to co-OC). The two best options (DeBoer and Fisch) have moved to bigger jobs.

I'm just hoping Warde makes the right call on Juwan - either major staff changes or complete clean house.

Think about something amazing as we reflect Jim's possible (likely?) departure.

He took the job about 9 years ago, December 30, 2014. I remember thinking while watching his press conference from home - Michigan is so down relative to Ohio, Bama, even MSU (which was in a run of 36-5 with two B1G titles). I felt it would be five years before we could realistically catch up with Ohio, at least being 50/50 chance at beating them.

Then 6 years after the hiring, December 2020, it felt like it had all failed. I wanted nothing more than for the guy to be happy and not have to cheer his players on after one of our WRs made an amazing catch in front of no ones vs PSU in 2020 and our guys didn't jump and celebrate spontaneously.

Three years ago, Warde did what must be done and got a much better deal based on results. JH humbly and massively reshaped his staff, gambled on MacDonald, and we've gone 40-3 since.

Three years later, he broke Ryan Day, to the point Ohio has had to ramp up its NIL just to keep guys like Egbuka, Traveon, etc. Saban's retired with an L to Jimbo as his final game.

I remember his speech at halftime in late Dec 2014 at the Illinois hoops game. He thanked US the fans for being so supportive while saying that - he (his team) hadn't even done a darn thing yet to earn this love. Now, nine years later, the love (if he goes) has been earned and let's get another Harbaugh family Lombardi trophy!

I'll acknowledge it's all speculation, but I've heard enough from Harbaugh I'm fairly convinced he wants to come back. I understand why Warde cut Harbaugh's pay after 2020, but that relationship needed to be repaired immediately after 21, and I don't think Warde ever did it, because I think Warde just has a big ego and can't accept that Harbaugh is more important to UM than he is.

Also, I think it's pretty easy to argue that all this capitulation to the NCAA rather than Michigan defending its reputation and putting its own case in the media was Warde's brilliant idea.

I was firmly in the, "If Harbaugh can't do it, no one can" camp.

And for a minute I thought "no one can" had won.

But Harbaugh did it.

He has earned doing whatever is best for him.

I don't really care at this point. The man came back home and won us the first NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP since 1997 and the first undisputed one since 1948.

Ohio State flunkies are sharpening their knives for November 30, 2024 pointing to their portal transfers and 5 star recruits, but whatever happens, on that day it will have been 1827 days since Ohio State beat Michigan.

Also, did I forget to say that we will still have WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP? I'm still going to be riding that high at least until Ohio State wins their next championship, but even then, I may not even care because the rivalry will have changed due to the new divisionless B1G, 12-team playoff, etc.

In that vein, remember, Ohio State would have been the #1 seed had they beat us and I still think they were the best team we'd played the entire season. And it was us, not them who bought the NC home. That will always rankle them and you can expect to hear "YOU GUYS CHEATED" for a long time but that's because they were that close to winning the whole thing.
