Video of Draymond Green throwing sucker punch
October 7th, 2022 at 10:53 AM ^
Well, back in my day, we put our hands up and jumped into fighting stances to let the adversary know the beef had escalated to fisticuffs before taking a shot like that. What Green did would've been recognized as a cheap shot which meant that Marquis of Queensbury rules were out the window. So if there's a brick or broken bottle on the sidewalk you are now permitted to grab that and bring it into the mix. Kids today tho...

Since you're talking definitions, Green didn't "cold cock" JP. I think this constituted a sucker punch. It was unexpected.
October 7th, 2022 at 11:52 AM ^
eh. you shove a grown man and you should probably expect this as a possible outcome.
if that man is draymond green, you can remove "possible".
October 7th, 2022 at 12:19 PM ^
I feel like this poster might actually be Charlie Sheen.
October 7th, 2022 at 12:47 PM ^
you shove a grown man and you should probably expect this as a possible outcome.
What happened in the video just prior to the shove?
We'll wait.
October 7th, 2022 at 2:01 PM ^
Charlie, in the state of California, just like Michigan, you are allowed to reasonable right of self-defense. When Green approaches and physically chest bump Jordan, Jordan has every right to use reasonable force. So we couldn’t draw sword and cut his head off Or pull a gun and shoot them but he certainly could push them back with his reasonable self-defense.

"[Poole] has been great, and there was nothing that warranted the situation yesterday. I want to make that clear." - Stephen Curry
October 7th, 2022 at 10:28 PM ^
That’s a bad quote for Draymond. Regardless of whatever the hell who said what, if Steph is backing Poole then that probably means the team is too.
October 7th, 2022 at 3:20 PM ^
Clearly you didn't watch the video, Green deserved to be shoved.
October 7th, 2022 at 12:45 PM ^
FFS.
Only on MGoBlog would someone actually perform the mental gymnastics needed to define what a proper sucker punch is.

Exactly, it's crazy how there are genuinely some people defending Draymond as if Poole pushing Draymond after he got in his face means that throwing a punch at a teammate in practice is warranted. It's a sucker punch because it was out of no where. Teammates get in shoving matches sometimes, but throw a punch? Absolutely not.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:53 AM ^
I think it is crazier that people are acting like people on the same sports team JUST NEVER get in fights. There is decades of evidence to the contrary.
I don't think anybody on this thread it "defending" Green. The specific question is, is that a sucker punch? I think there are compelling arguments both ways.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:56 AM ^
People are definitely defending Green by saying "what did Poole expect by shoving back Draymond?"
October 7th, 2022 at 11:05 AM ^
Well Antwan probably didn't expect Marcellus to react the way he did but he had to expect some reaction.
Look, Green is an established POS and should not be punching a teammate, I just don't think this was a "sucker punch."
October 7th, 2022 at 11:55 AM ^
I'd call it a cheap shot rather than a sucker punch. Cheap shots are also bad, so it that doesn't let Green off the hook at all. Dude is absolutely an asshole.
October 7th, 2022 at 11:11 AM ^
Just because Isiah Thomas punched Bill Laimbeer in the back of the head 30 years ago doesn’t mean teammates regularly punch each other. Getting in a shoving match/fight happens all the time. Jump-punching a teammate in the jaw without them looking at you definitely doesn’t happen regularly in professional sports.
October 7th, 2022 at 12:31 PM ^
Teammates fairly often get into shoving and shouting matches. They don't often sucker-punch each other.
October 7th, 2022 at 2:00 PM ^
Correct. I think if any of their teammates thought that DG was about to start throwing punches instead of just pushing and shoving, they would have intervened. So I guess I'm on Team Sucker Punch.
October 7th, 2022 at 3:13 PM ^
You have no idea what you're talking about. It was a sucker punch because it was clear Poole wasn't ready/escalating to a fight (see the fact he still wasn't looking at Green after the push indicating he was trying to focus on the practice) and Green threw a punch anyway. Pushing happens all the time in sports without it escalating to punching. This happens in games often as well. You can push someone, especially when they invade your personal space during a team practice without having to expect getting punched in the face. Sucker punch without question, your reasoning makes no sense.
October 7th, 2022 at 11:31 AM ^
I’m not sure why anybody is trying to explain the difference between sucker punch and being an asshole. There is no difference here. What DG did was both.
did sucker punch and is an asshole.
October 7th, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
Exactly, it's crazy how there are genuinely some people defending Draymond
You should see RCMB.
October 7th, 2022 at 2:54 PM ^
I would argue that JP's hands being at his hips constituted a DG Defense. I mean, we all know how DG like to go for the beans. I think JP was simply caught defending the area most probable for receiving an attack.
October 7th, 2022 at 4:19 PM ^
Rudy Tomjanovich on Kermit Washington was a sucker punch.
This was a punk ass move by Green but not technically a sucker punch.
October 8th, 2022 at 12:38 AM ^
Kermit on Rudy…
October 8th, 2022 at 12:33 AM ^
Definitely not a sucker punch, but it’s just freaking dirty. I guess I expected them to be fighting over a rebound and things got out of hand. I didn’t expect him to walk away, catch his breath, gain his composure and then calmly walk over and lose his shit. I don’t see how these two can remain teammates.
For those idiots on Red Cedar acting like Juwan’s grab was anything close to the punch Green threw, is just ignorant. Juwan’s “punch” would at most leave a small scratch, whereas Green’s punch could’ve put someone in a hospital. They are not even remotely close to the same thing.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:13 AM ^
Making an early case for “locker room cancer of the year.” His numbers/impact not what they once were; clearly on downside of career. They’d be wise to move him on/out.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:14 AM ^
duno if id call that a sucker punch.
I did watch a number of sports shows yesterday and they all praised it. This guy is beyond unhinged. He's Rodman with more anger. Rodman was an instigator, but you could see he was artful with it. if you can call it that.
This guy is a f-ing nutbag. Remains so. Has always been. Kerr and others are enablers who basically look the other way while he's out there being a complete prick to everyone all the time.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:19 AM ^
What is your definition of a sucker punch? Because that looked like a sucker punch.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:26 AM ^
The reason it doesn't qualify to me is that they are already involved in an altercation when it is thrown. It's an egregious escalation for sure, but not a sucker punch.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:27 AM ^
I mean, any time you push somebody in any circumstance you need to be on high alert. If Green had punched him before the push it would have been a sucker punch.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:33 AM ^
I think that's true for random guy at a bar, but not somebody on your team.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:44 AM ^
People on the same sports teams get into fights all the time. This is not like the first time this has happened by a long shot.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:50 AM ^
I think you just proved his point that this was a sucker punch. Teammates get in fights and shoving matches all the time and they never go beyond that, but throw a punch? Nope. That was a sucker punch
October 7th, 2022 at 11:00 AM ^
Never go beyond that? Isiah Thomas broke his hand on Bill Lambeer's face. Michael Jordan fought like everybody on his team. Shaq put Scott Skiles in a headlock. Lebron James had to be restrained from Mario Chalmers on the bench of a game during a timeout.
This isn't a new thing.
October 7th, 2022 at 11:09 AM ^
In Shaq's defense, no one could stand Skiles. Everyone wanted to at least put him in a headlock.
October 7th, 2022 at 11:33 AM ^
Latrell Sprewell…
October 7th, 2022 at 1:50 PM ^
You named 4 examples - most not punches - over a span of 35 years. I think you demonstrated that the specific type of behavior demonstrated by Greene is not common.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:35 AM ^
Eh, Poole pushed him away from his body space and at the same time let his own body fall away from DG to de-escalate the situation. Green responded by punching him in the face, that's a sucker punch. You can't punch someone trying to prevent a fight from happening. Maybe I am wrong, but It almost looked like Poole wasn't even looking at Green when he got punched.
October 7th, 2022 at 10:48 AM ^
Talk shit.
Get in each other's face.
Shove away.
Take a swing.
Sorry, that's the nature of how shit goes down. Did you want Green to announce it? There was no blind side hit. This was a natural escalation.
Those are some maize colored glasses. How do you expect them to get into a fight where its not a sucker punch?
You rapscallion! To arms!
To arms!
Now, you may swing!
October 7th, 2022 at 10:52 AM ^
This was a natural escalation
Lol no it wasn't. These are teammates in practice, not 2 strangers in a bar. There's a reason this is a big story because throwing a punch in practice is not normal behavior
October 7th, 2022 at 12:15 PM ^
With that asshole? No. You should expect it.
October 7th, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
This doesnt make your point. You're just wrong, man.
October 7th, 2022 at 12:36 PM ^
Poole didn't say anything in that video. Green was running his mouth and then got in Poole's face. He pushed him away and got punched in the face. Green is the turd here. He's a bitter butthole who's jealous of Poole. I'm sorry Draymond, but teams don't give out max deals to defensive players that fight their teammates and can't shoot.
October 7th, 2022 at 5:15 PM ^
That’s the critical piece of this, for me. This is Draymomd, on the way down, not having the poise, smarts, or grace not to humiliate himself further. No way you come out on top of an encounter like that. The people who matter will remember this forever.
October 8th, 2022 at 7:56 AM ^
+ 1, you used ‘rapscallion’

Darren McCarty here and in a documentary about the Wings-Avs rivalry, would call this a coldcock punch. It’ll be interesting to see the NBA’s reaction after the video release. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get a major suspension and fines.

Sprewell got 68 games for I think choking his coach. Trying to find video of it.
