Twitter Smoke: Chris Partridge Leaving UM?

Submitted by Caesar on December 12th, 2019 at 8:57 PM

B1G Tim (@Coachfleck11) on Twitter is a high school football coach and Michigan observer. I don't follow him closely, but I don't believe he's a rumor monger. Anyway, according to him, Coach Partridge is no longer making at-home recruiting visits

In response to his assertion, another Twitter user commented that the coach was just in North Carolina.

Does anyone know about this either way? Is there some smoke building? With all the talk about the talent gap with OSU, this would be a big blow.

BS

UConn was 19th in total D in 2012 and 49th in 2011 under Brown.

Playing the likes of Temple, Rutgers and BC the Huskies went 10-14 in Brown’s two seasons as DC. They we

I mean if we played a Big Easy schedule we’d be 12-0 every year, have the number 1 D and O and look like world beaters.

Don Brown made his bones coaching scrappy defenses in backwater conferences. He gets to us with a pedigree and does great against 90% of the schedule.  It’s what he does against the elite offenses that leaves a lot to be desired.

So the guy who was a high school coach 5 years ago with no DC experience is a better DC than the guy who's been putting out top defenses at BC and Michigan for the last decade?

DB is a proven DC and Partridge is a proven recruiter.  The same cannot be said the other way around for either man.  Which is more important?  Probably depends on the situation.  But, right now I'd lean towards Partridge the harder to replace one, particularly given the age of the two.  I've thought for a while now we're going to have to promote him to retain him.  He's highly sought after every offseason.  I think it's only a matter of time until he's gone if we doesn't become our next DC.

Partridge should be moved back to linebackers (where he played) and should be made co-dc in a role similar to Gattis' in Alabama.  Start grooming him to take over if DB isn't leaving this offseason.  He is responsible for the first two years of Devin Bush's development.  Early returns on his safety work looked promising as Metellus was the most improved player on the team last year.  But this year it would seem as if perhaps that ability has plateaued.  If Campanile doesn't leave he can go to safeties.  He hadn't specifically coached lb since 2006 and that was for a high school.  Also, I'm not gonna say DB is a bad dc, but blitzing and playing man on 2nd and long and 3rd and long is just asking for it, especially against a team as talented and well-coached as Ohio State.

There is not a DC alive that could do any better than Don Brown has given what he has to work with. Sorry, but thinking a new hire will magically guarantee the the defense will vault from top 10 to top 2? is assinine.

The gap with OSU is programmatic and systemic. Them you cycle through coaches and coordinators the worse it's going to get.

First off there's a recruiting gap. until we pay players and promised them they won't have to bother with school if they don't want to that gap is going to exist and it's going to be very wide.  You'll always be scheming to cover up weaknesses and not have them exploited by teams that have no weaknesses. Like OSU.

OSU develops players on a schedule 1 to 2 years learning, 1 to 2 years starting (depending on if they leave for the NFL). Sure there exceptional players start or rotate in threetheir first two years, but the point is 90% of the players on the field from OSU are working from a playbook and a plan that has been a well-established and cycled through for a decade with the only variance being tweaks for the current player set. Not experimenting with a, or trying to install be, or testing out see, and then going back to a like Michigan has. this is the reason OSU made hardly any mistakes as they have been practicing the same thing for so long and have just done so many reps.

You'll also have to free our student-athletes up from actually attending classes or even bothering to pretend they're students so they can focus more on football.

Until Michigan throws in the towel on making school a part of playing football and not paying their players, the recruiting inequalities will be there and there will always be holes and weaknesses on the roster. You're just not going to get 4 and 5 star athletes two to three deep at every position without it.

Firing Don Brown and hiring another defensive coordinator has a 0% chance of improving our record against OSU, a 10% of maintaining the status quo, and the 90% chance of losing us a whole bunch of games aside from OSU.

Who do you think would actually do any better?

DB is responsible for what he has to work with.  He was able to get stops with Hoke's players.  Hoke was able to recruit better with the same limitations.  No one is expecting a shutout, but some resistance is beyond reasonable to expect.  He's had more talent than Wisconsin and hey give their O some sort of chance.

Exactly.  Also important to note that Ohio State ALWAYS has its best athletes on the field, regardless of age/year in school.  They scheme to enhance their natural abilities.

Michigan does the exact opposite.  Hinton, Smith, Mcgrone, Hill should have all been on the field starting Day 1.  Those are our best athletes on defense and there is no reason they should have been off the field.  Glasgow, great kid and gave everything he had, but a total liability from an athletic perspective.  The best athletes have to play, period.

Like it or not, and I repeated in another thread, the road to any championship goes through Ohio State.  So that has to be the #1 priority and our best athletes have to play.

I've never gotten the "he did what he could with what he had to work with" argument. It's not like this is Brown's first year here, it's his fourth.  This is the defense he built, and wanted, and we still got our heads kicked in by every offense with a pulse this year.  Don Brown is a good coordinator, and will get us to 9-3/10-2 every year, but that's his ceiling, hes not a great coordinator, or an elite defensive coordinator

Call me crazy but I'll start worrying when someone other than a "retired competitive eater" (per his bio) with less than 500 followers starts talking about this.

I wonder if Harbaugh is not happy with his coaching skills on the safeties? It seem like when he became a position coach he lost his recruiting mojo, last year I'm not sure he got the big catches he did in previous seasons. He may be looking for defensive coordinator position.

If Brown has decided Michigan is his last rodeo, then CP next in line could take a few years so needs to move on to move up ?

Can’t keep him forever. And unless he’s able to make a step up to coordinator - and that’s not going to happen unless Brown leaves - it’s gonna be hard to keep him around much longer. If it’s not this year, it’s the next or the year after.

No offense, but your "if it's not this year, it's the next or the year after" could be said about virtually any coach. I think I read somewhere that the average coaching tenure at any given school is approximately 2 years.

Just look at Michigan since Harbaugh took over: Greg Jackson (1 year), Jedd Fisch (2 years), DJ Durkin (1 year), Don Brown (4 years), Al Washington (1 year), Jim McElwain (1 year), Tim Drevno (3 years), John Baxter (1 year), Jay Harbaugh (5 years), Pep Hamilton (2 years), etc.

People get worked up about the turnover on the coaching staff sometimes, but that's the norm. It's no different than what other schools are fighting against.

While true, Partridge is a top 10 recruiter nationally.  It would be very difficult to replace his recruiting production.  The same is not true of those other guys with the closest being Washington, but we always knew he'd eventually head to OSU.  Partridge on the other hand was given his first P5 opportunity by UM so I think some more loyalty is expected, fairly or unfairly.  I agree we're probably going to have to keep throwing increasingly more money or titles at him to retain him and that we should do so.  Do you think he's as replaceable as the average 2-year tenure guy?

Well, there's turnover at most locations other than Sparty. They've got such a strong staff that it's a credit to Dantini that he's been able to keep them together for year after year, churning out such spectacular success.

Then again, maybe there's something to be said for bringing in fresh faces and ideas every once in a while. That being said, I do think there are some losses that can be quite detrimental and losing Partridge might be on that end of things. The success he's had with recruiting would be tough to replace.

I just read a report that said Hafley at OSU is now the leading candidate for the BC job. That would be a huge win for us.

If Partridge is leaving, I’m sure he would continue to recruit through the early signing period to help keep all the pieces in tact. At least I would hope so. This just doesn’t make sense to me. I’m not believing anything until an official announcement is made.

Don't know about the rest of you,  but I'm fully prepared to overreact to every random rumor posted on Twitter. I honestly can't imagine any other possible course of action than to believe everything that's on the internet..
