Timing of "Hang 100 on em" and 4th and 1

Submitted by Catholepistemiad on October 30th, 2023 at 11:10 AM

Sorry if this is snowflakey, but I stay away from mgoblog on weekends since I record games and don't want any spoilers. I saw the "Ryan Day's brother became a manager of a PI firm" thread, and have some thoughts, but the thread is probably dead at this point. So I'm creating a new topic about the timing of a couple key things, since I don't see it mentioned anywhere else.

So I've been keeping up on all this, and when I read about a private investigation firm giving the NCAA info on Michigan, and definitely wondering who that firm is. I've seen rumours about Ryan Day being behind the investigation, or hiring a PI or whatver, and I figure, okay, that's just rumour.

And I'm trying not to go crazy about all this, because I acknowledge that I get almost all my info from this site, so I know it's biased. And sometimes, I feel like I'm being radicalized or something, because when you step back and look at what most people here are saying, it's "everyone is conspiring against us" nonsense that, if I saw it on some other board, I'd laugh at it.

But, what has made me read crazy stuff like "Ryan Day hired a PI to look into Michigan and find whatever dirt he can" and nod my head has been the "hang a hundred on em" story. First, a link:

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/ohio-state-coach-ryan-day-threatened-to--hang-100--on-michigan-a

I'll quote the relevant part:

Earlier this week, the Ohio State and Michigan ball coaches allegedly got into it on a Big Ten head coaches conference call. According to reports, while Day was speaking, Harbaugh cut him off to accuse the second-year head coach of holding on-field drills before the Friday 8/7 start date for such practices. Harbaugh mentioned linebackers coach Al Washington by name and referenced a photo taken of Washington working with players that had been making the rounds. Day, incensed, replied “How about I worry about my team and you worry about yours?” This, folks, is what we call midseason form.

Then, Day went on to tell his team we're going to hang 100 on em blah blah (over three years later, they're halfway there fyi). I dunno. I think about this story a lot, I guess. Especially his reply -- "how about I worry about my team and you worry about yours" -- instead of denying it, or even saying he'll look into it, it was more like he resented the fact that he was being accused. It just sounds like the kind of guy who would be pissed about being called out for breaking the rules, and want to spread that around. Not a far stretch, I mean a lot of people on this board have advocated for that on the Michigan side -- to go scorched earth and dig up everyone else's secrets, etc. So it's given me the opinion of "sure, it's possible, very possible" and made me feel okay to think that, given that since I'm a nobody, it doesn't really matter what I think.

So, when the link with the incorporation of the PI firm comes out, and it has dates, my first thought was to see when it happened relative to this story. I'm not sure exactly when the Big Ten conference call happened, but all the stories about it were in August 2020. This 4th and 1 Investigations was created September 14 2020. That timing seems too weird to think that these things are not related.

tl; dr -- It was August 2020 when Harbaugh accused Ryan Day of practices before he was supposed to, and Day got pissed at him in a call with other coaches. September 2020 is when this PI firm was created.

Honestly I want UM to stop trying for the moral highground.

We've done our best to live up to that standard for years and now that something is even alleged everyone fingerpoints and says "look, they're just like everyone else!"

UM doesn't even try to counteract the narrative (maybe there's stuff behind the scenes) but that just isn't American culture anymore.

Idc if we bend rules anymore. We should be tampering near non-stop and throwing every resource at becoming a dynasty. Then we should deny, deflect, and whatabout our way to multiple Nattys.

It will improve enrollment, get more people into the brand, and ultimately make Michigan better. The only ppl buying the "moral highground" are ppl who already love UM and want to protect its reputation - everyone else believes whatever they want.

Take the gloves off and keep them off.

I can’t disagree. Have the reputations of any of the high profile bad actors suffered for any extended period of time? UNC, Alabama, OSU and so on?

I’d go a step further to say that the schools that do bend the knee are the ones that suffer longer in the eye of the public.

I think hiring/firing racist, the OC being fired with an ongoing FBI investigation, running the largest illicit sign stealing operation in sports, multiple recruiting/ lying infractions, hiding Mazi’s gun charge etc. have made it safe to say they haven’t been shooting for a moral high ground.
3 coaches in the program have been fired this year alone, all with issues related to morals, the high ground is safe.

Surely we can have a snowflakes thread for this kind of "hot take."

I'll bet that the timing of Chris Day's hanging out a shingle has more to do with his DEA retirement date than some statement that Ryan Day may or may not have made.

Hard to believe this post has upvotes.

There is zero reason to believe a causal relationship between "hang 100 in em" and the incorporation of his brothers business one month later.

And no, it is not an interesting coincidence. It's a coincidence that is not interesting.

Wait, what?

Ryan Day's brother opens a PI firm named, " 4th and 1 Investigations and Protective Agency LLC" in 2020.

Meanwhile, one of the most infamous 4th and 1 plays occurred in The Game in 2016, and arguably one of the most painful 4th and 1 plays occurred in the 2019 version.  A score there makes it a one TD game with 12 minutes to go.

Fortunately, HH learned from his mistakes and torched them in 2021.

Maybe I just enjoy conspiracies but a very worthwhile post IMO.

This is one of the most poorly reported alleged scandals that I've ever witnessed. There is no local sourcing on it. That means whatever evidence of cheating being alleged is not based on any firsthand account.

This story is less than 2 weeks old and the reporters who initially brought it to public attention were handed it. A story like this has no legs unless a) you break it through a legitimate news outlet and b) there is a regulating body which is taking action in response to whatever is alleged and there is evidence available to support

Yahoo Sports never disclosed the sourcing of its initial reporting while the Washington Post issued the biggest tell of the account so far when it reported that the NCAA was approached by a third party outside investigative firm about the so-called cheating. If this story was the work product of WaPo investigative reporters, the newspaper would have named its source to help authenticate its reporting or explained why the sources aren't named. But that didn't occur because the source asked not to be revealed. Why?

Why would an outside investigative firm want to hide its identity in uncovering potentially one of the biggest sports scandals in recent memory? Because it was protecting a client. Whether the client was an institution, a university or an individual, this non-disclosure arrangement is in place.

Outside of the jarring headlines about the illegalities in obtaining advanced scouting on future Michigan football opponents by an overzealous football staffer, there is no indication this story goes deeper. There is no reporting of direct linkage to the rest of the coaching staff other than the suggestion of a shared university computer drive. And even more unclear is when this alleged illegal electronic surveillance by Michigan first began.

So, what does that say about the reporting? It says that the story isn't being driven by a news organization, it's being driven by people who aren't journalists.

Whether Ryan Day is the lead perpetrator, this originated and is being pursued by multiple Ohio State football mouthpieces who can't accept that Michigan's football program has taken them to the woodshed the last two years and is on track to kick their ass again.

Interesting thought. My thought has been that this 4th and 1 investigative agency is for digging up dirt, and spying on, other programs. Get info on who are weak staff members, who is feeling some heat, etc to gain intel on what the team might be doing on the field. Dig up dirt on rivals to either get rid of coaches or smear them. But that's just how I'm reading it.

I recall that situation - and, that the NCAA did absolutely nothing.   This directly violates NCAA rules about when coaches and players can work together.

Just another example of the approach the NCAA does, or doesn't, take toward enforcement.  And, of course - the entire issue of hosting camps to provide opportunities / visibility to high school prospects from various parts of the country - as they capitulated to ACC / SEC coaches who would prefer to hang out at their summer house - or go fishing - instead of working hard year round as certain coaches (like Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan staff) are willing to do.

When I was at Michigan, my roommate was trying to break into broadcast sports. He got a job at a station in East Lansing. One of his first assignments was to interview Magic who was in EL for something. It happened at Breslin in the summer, during the time period when teams could have 2 of 3 things together - coaches, players and basketballs. Players could play games against each other but no coaches were allowed, or players and coaches could meet but they weren't allowed to have any basketballs. Here's Magic sitting at Breslin while the Staee basketball team was running drills under the watchful eye and piercing whistle of Jud Heathcote. This aired locally on their sports segment.

You record games, you say? If you're willing to make a little extra cash, I have a wild idea about how Michigan could gain a legal tactical advantage...

I'm with you here (although Day's not Charmin, he's onion skinned). It's all so perfectly in keeping with both Day characters that I'm having trouble imagining that it isn't true. It's as inevitable a result of the Washington comment as last year's cover-zero was an inevitable result of "soft" and "third base."

I do not know the dates, which is probably just lazy posting on my part, but I would be willing to believe that whatever this Ohio State (assumption on my part) investigation is, it came about from the rumored hacking of a players iPad, which supposedly had a Michigan ip address on it or something like that along with Michigan's coaching staff having Ohio State practice films.

It just seems more plausible to me that they were looking for that type of connection but couldn't find it (because it doesn't exist) and stumbled into Stalions masterplan and sort of went with that.

It's not nonsense when OSU hired people to dig up dirt on Michigan and sent it to the NCAA who brought it to the B1G who told Michigan's opponents (notably Sparty) before even making Michigan aware of the charges.

This is literally a conspiracy against Michigan regardless if you like the word.

Thinking about it now, why was OSU not investigated for that by the conference? Are extra practices not against the rules or practices outside of the start dates? I would imagine that is a competitive advantage.

I would have to assume that Harbaugh only said that the B1G told warned him that OSU was practicing early, that's only fair, right B1G?

Since national and prominent outlets feel free to write our Coach and team obituaries based on anonymous and narrative planted unsupported allegations from outside interests I have something I must share.

I have a source unaffiliated with any school who tells me Michigan wins the National College Football Championship. I see signs that indicate this is a certainty and will ensure Jim signs the largest NCAA football team coaching contract. This win and subsequent shocking investigations force Columbus to oust MayDay and the stalion he rode in on.

Three years from now the disgraced, frail man from New Hampshire is bankrupt from defamation settlements and mumbling his former brilliance to his brother through the reinforced glass on his weekly visits to the federal penitentiary.

I would love to share more...maybe in the near future as the next shoes drop from my connected source.

I am glad what counts as news no longer requires verification and only speculation to properly demonize people we are afraid of. Jeez, I hope this doesn't get out to a wider audience.
