From Seth on the Family Situation

Submitted by Seth on August 8th, 2023 at 10:59 AM

Our view when we look this way is a lot better than the opposite direction.

I wanted to let the readership know why I haven't been responding to emails or writing much the last week. My son has been diagnosed with something called Miller Fisher (no relation), a type of Guillain–Barré syndrome. It's rare, and one of the shittier things that can happen to your kid, but one of the better situations for the pediatric ICU at Mott because you can make a full recovery.

Unfortunately it's a bit of a haul to get there. If the treatment works his strength should return, he can come off the ventilator, and we can get to a new normal where I can get some work done. Until he turns the corner, I'm sorry that a lot of the things I do here are going to have to sit around.

We are not asking anything of any of you right now except patience. If you feel like showing gratitude to someone, please direct it towards the doctors and nurses of the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. I cannot begin to describe the level of caring and competence we've seen here from everyone. Things might have gone in a lot of directions in the last few days, and we are skidding along peak outcomes because of the brilliance and teamwork of their Pediatric, Neurology, Physical & Occupational Therapy, Psychiatry, Respiratory, Child Life Services and above all Nursing staffs.*

On the plus side, we have an INCREDIBLE view of the Arb and Huron River, and the public bathroom/shower we use has a painting of Tate and Denard.

So I think we'll be fine.

* Seriously, everybody one day should see what Rounds look like. It's like watching NASA work an Apollo mission.

Love you Seth, hoping for the best for your son and your family. I've shadowed several rounds in different departments at Michigan Medicine and it really is an impressive sight at time.

Sending good vibes your way.   Wishing your son a complete recovery - thoughts and prayers with him, you, and your entire family.

The staff at Mott's is incredible.   And, that view - plan to take a walk through the Arb with your son after he recovers.

Seth, you have been a lifeline to news about the program and how we process developments involving the university, we can only hope to provide a lifeline of well wishes, prayers and beneficial support as you experience this family medical crisis and overcome it. Just know we are behind you and your family and will support you as needed.

Praying for your son, Seth. Years ago I was part of the pain management rounding team as a pharmacy student at Michigan. I can second that "Apollo Mission" statement. They are the epitome of the word "professional" and also of "emapthy" and "strength". He's in good hands. Godspeed.

Family comes first.  It's totally understandable if you're not able to produce a lot of content at the moment.

Hope/pray for all the best - he should be in good hands at Mott, fortunately.

Seth - all positive vibes and karma that we can muster to you and your family.  B’Ezrat Hashem

And this is why my donation dollars go to Mott instead of the athletic department - these are the things that really matter.

I'm so sorry to hear this, but hopeful about the prognosis.  There are so many things in life more important than our work.  I don't pray often but this will be an exception.

My heart goes out to your family. Glad your son is able to get excellent care, close to home with loved ones nearby. And I'm glad you can put the day to day tasks of your job aside to be there for him - that's the way it should be!

On a sillier note, did the artist use Lloyd Brady as a model for T-Force or is it just me?

May the One who blessed our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah, bless and heal Seth's son. May the Holy Blessed One be filled with compassion for their health to be restored and their strength to be revived. May God heal him soon, body and soul, together with others who suffer illness. And let us say: Amen

My prayers are not only with your son, but especially with your wife, and also with you. I think the agony and grief of a mother's heart for their sick or struggling child can be very severe. שָׁלוֹם

p.s. For me, I will be praying for you all in reality. It is part of my daily life.

Thank you for sharing this update on your son, Seth.  No doubt his health is far and away your highest priority so don't worry about us.  He's in good hands there at Mott Children's Hospital, they're about as good as it gets.  Praying for a quick and complete return to health for your little man!

I'm glad to hear he is expected to recover!

If you have the time and the interest, I'd be curious to hear how the treatment process evolved for you. This seems like something you should be able to go through the ER and get triaged, and into diagnosis stage. The fact that you felt like you needed to reach out on this forum seems like you hit a wall somewhere that you should not have hit.

So I'm just curious how you got through the emergency and diagnosis process and what ended up working.

(generally I despise going through Mott for routine care and testing, it is slow and difficult and expensive, but for something rare and complex like this I'd want nothing else in my child's backyard).

I'm sorry for your boy to pull a crappy card from the health deck. Sucks big time. Hoping he makes a speedy and full recovery. This too shall pass.

Great hospital and very grateful my niece was there for the first 2 months of her life when she was born with a defect that very few hospitals in the US can accommodate.    Very thankful for them and to this day they still consult on her condition even though she had a successful surgery and will be fully recovered in a couple years.

Very sorry to hear that as those two diseases are very scary.  So I take it with meds after he gets over this bout or flare up it can hopefully keep it in remission for his life?  I know it affects the nerves which In turn why he is on the ventilator because his nerves to breath are not working.  It is a very scary thing to see and I wish you nothing but you and your family the best.  Hoping that some day they find a cure to these or at least something that makes a flare up never happen again.

As I posted elsewhere in this thread, my brother had it and is fine, got it via a rather mundane (stomach) virus.

It took him like 2 months to being independent, 3-4 months to get to pretty normal, maybe half a year to "not very noticeable," and a year to get to like 99%, ironing out the finer nerve ending kinds of activities. But YMMV

He's 100% now but he just has to be mindful of things like, you know, whether a brand new covid vaccine might be trouble for him. But he's gotten them all and whatever else the biosphere has thrown at him the past 3 years with absolutely no issues - and this is in NYC

Sorry to hear this, Seth, but glad you and your family have access to the real Michigan Difference.  They are top-notch at every position there.  Your little guy is in the best of hands.

Praying for a speedy and complete recovery for your son.  I hope Mott does their best Michigan interior line impression and steamrolls this thing with purpose and prejudice and precision.

The upside to our shared addiction is that we'll all still be here when you get back.

I can't begin to heap enough praises on the Mott staff that I encountered when my child spent more than a week in the hospital with RSV when they were less than 2 months old. And that includes, of course, the amazing doctors and nurses that took care of us. But also every other staff member we encountered. From the check-in desk, cafeteria, gift shop, cleaning crews, and the awesome person in billings that helped us navigate some tricky insurance related issues. They took a period of our lives that was fairly stressful and really went out of their way to make us feel comfortable.

Best wishes Seth! No doubt about a full recovery with St. Denard looking over your little guy. You're in great hands at Mott.

Knowing you you'll probably be able to write a Neck Sharpies on the mechanism of Guillain-Barre before long. Autoimmunity is sometimes a black box as far as origins go but the treatment for the symptoms while the body sorts it out can be very effective. Bright days ahead.

Wishing your son a complete recovery. Also sending you strength to cope with what parents dread the most, a sick child. I'm so glad he's in a place that provides the very best care.

Was just thinking about you and your family as I hopped in my car out here in Pasadena this morning. Thank you for posting an update.

Thankful to know that there's a path to recovery.  Shit like this puts football (and everything else we spend time arguing about) in perspective.
