From Seth on the Family Situation

Submitted by Seth on August 8th, 2023 at 10:59 AM

Our view when we look this way is a lot better than the opposite direction.

I wanted to let the readership know why I haven't been responding to emails or writing much the last week. My son has been diagnosed with something called Miller Fisher (no relation), a type of Guillain–Barré syndrome. It's rare, and one of the shittier things that can happen to your kid, but one of the better situations for the pediatric ICU at Mott because you can make a full recovery.

Unfortunately it's a bit of a haul to get there. If the treatment works his strength should return, he can come off the ventilator, and we can get to a new normal where I can get some work done. Until he turns the corner, I'm sorry that a lot of the things I do here are going to have to sit around.

We are not asking anything of any of you right now except patience. If you feel like showing gratitude to someone, please direct it towards the doctors and nurses of the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. I cannot begin to describe the level of caring and competence we've seen here from everyone. Things might have gone in a lot of directions in the last few days, and we are skidding along peak outcomes because of the brilliance and teamwork of their Pediatric, Neurology, Physical & Occupational Therapy, Psychiatry, Respiratory, Child Life Services and above all Nursing staffs.*

On the plus side, we have an INCREDIBLE view of the Arb and Huron River, and the public bathroom/shower we use has a painting of Tate and Denard.

So I think we'll be fine.

* Seriously, everybody one day should see what Rounds look like. It's like watching NASA work an Apollo mission.

I cannot imagine what you’ve gone through and are going through Seth. We are praying for a full and speedy recovery.

stay strong, and we’ll hear from you when things are better.

All positive thoughts and prayers to your son and family Seth.

Those of us in Washtenaw County don't realize how lucky we are to have access to Michigan Medicine, especially when it comes to serious diseases, until we need it. Mott is the crown jewel of the medical campus.

Sending good vibes, Seth. If there is anything I can do in this space, let me know. If I ran ran the place, it would instantly go to shit, but if there is anything administrative that needs doing, I will certainly give it a go if I can.

Sending love and prayers to you and your family. Sounds like the worst is over and it's just a waiting game now. Glad you can be a Mott's and have such wonderful care. We're all pulling for your kiddo.

If anyone wants to setup a money cannon to fire, I'm more than willing to contribute and I'm sure others here will as well.

Prayers for a full recovery for lil Seth.  Motts is the best.  Was just there with my little man this week for a broken toe.  From start to finish, the staff there is nothing short of amazing.  He's in the best hands.

Sincerest and deepest sympathies to you and your family, Seth. I am rooting for you boy. He is in great hands.

Mott is quite the hospital. The views from the upper floors are spectacular. My niece and nephew were born there.

I was born in old Woman’s nearly a half century ago. 😬

Thoughts, prayers and patience are sent your way.  Please, for the love of all that’s Maize and Blue, don’t think about us at all.  We are fine.  Take care of your family.

And Mott is an incredible place.  They are all amazingly skilled and caring people. If you want anything, just ask.  They have a department (used to be called Child Life) whose whole job it is to take care of all the non-medical stuff you and your kid need.  Incredible people.

Nobody cares about the Blog, we'd rather your kid, you, and your family be safe.  I'm really happy you were able to get into Mott.  Good luck for an awesome recovery!

I'm glad you found the right place and that the team thinks they can help your son.  Your family is numero uno.  Don't worry about us.  We need you but we can be patient.  Go Blue!

Our prayers are with you and your son (and whole family for that matter), Seth.  Nothing scarier than dealing with a serious health issue for your child (young child no less).  Hopefully your son is through this soon.

My aunt had/developed GBS a couple years ago and it was obv a scary experience for her and the whole family.  She was in the hospital for a bit while regaining full breathing and motor function but is otherwise fine now luckily.

Again - hoping for speedy recovery for your little guy.

My wife is a nurse in the PICU at Mott. Her name is Ashley, a blonde. If she is taking care of your son, he's in good hands, she's an awesome nurse. All of those nurses and doctors are incredible. Speedy recovery to your son.

Sorry to hear Seth, but glad you are in good hands.  My wife works there as a nurse.  Really puts in perspective how our troubles are really not that bad.  Healthy kids and family really is so important.  Thanks to all the nurses who do those tough jobs.

Seth, of course I'm prejudiced, as are many others on this blog, but with your son at C.S. Mott, he couldn't be in better hands. Go Blue and Go Son of Seth.

As a dad to a child with multiple, severe disabilities, I know exactly where you are and what you are going through. We've spent hundreds of nights in the hospital and don't have a "cure" per say, but:

We have a road. And a plan. And a committed, dedicated, wonderful care team. And friends and family to lean on when things get tough.

When it comes to your kid the intensity is magnified tenfold. While our situations are not the same, people like myself are the ones to lean on for advice, encouragement and support. Literally, having other dads with kids like mine has made all the difference.

We are all here for you, Seth. Prayers up for your boy.

Seth, echo what everyone else has said. As a parent, you would instantly take on 1000x pain suffered on behalf of your child.

If the mgoblog community can provide you any financial or meal delivery or any other such support, please let us know. For all the infighting among the Michigan fanbase, we are the best when it comes to a time of crisis. And for all you and the rest of the mgoblog team have given us, literally for free, over the years we'd all be happy to support in any way we can. Don't be shy and don't hesitate to ask for help (if it's needed).

This is so awful to hear, Seth. Sending thoughts and prayers, anything else you need just let us know — our patience is the least we could do considering all the time you've dedicated to us!
