*Report: NCAA Situation [partially?] Resolved; No More Games for Harbaugh [TBD], No Recruits for First Two Games [apparently confirmed]

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on August 29th, 2023 at 2:31 PM

Angelique is reporting in The Detroit News (remainder of summary redacted).

CORRECTION: Angelique's story was about the loss of two recruiting weekends, not a resolution to the NCAA bullshit. - LSA

STORY.

[* I went back in and tweaked the title to reflect the apparent current state of the situation.  I would recommend taking anything and everything with a grain of salt until we see an official announcement from the Michigan Athletic Department - rob f]

Great resolution.  This is done and we can put it behind us.  The NCAA knew this wasn't going to end well for them but it also allowed us to negate any risk of further penalties.

The NCAA’s response wasn’t that “four games is not sufficient.” They simply declined the negotiated terms and intended to continue with their investigation and let the COI determine the punishment next summer.

Believe it or not, I don’t think it really matters to the NCAA whether he’s suspended one game, three games, or 6 games. Turning down the 4 games wasn’t so much a “we’re coming for more!!” As it was a “let’s do this process the way it’s supposed to be done.” I don’t see what they actually gain if their intent is to just go for the kill here.

Has the NCAA ever used the “you cannot host recruits” before? Or is this something they just made up to “get the final word”???

I really hope that someone like Jadyn Davis just HAPPENS to host a watch party…that just HAPPENS to be in Ann Arbor, and just HAPPENS to have a guest list of a bunch of really good high school athletes…

Two thoughts:

If this doesn't lead to some kind of burger-related endorsement deal, we have failed as a society.

Pretty sure most of our recruits want to come for the last game of the season when to witness the completion of the tour de chapeau on the cooler crappers.

Ann Arbor — Michigan will not be allowed to host football recruits during the first two football games of the season as part of a negotiated resolution with the NCAA, multiple sources told The Detroit News. The Wolverines open the season on Saturday against East Carolina and the following week against UNLV.

That's what I got from Google when I searched for the Det News article.

This article is still ambiguous to me. Is the NCAA completely done investigating Harbaugh? Or is the resolution to take away the two home game recruiting visits just related to Sherrone Moore? Idk it wasn't definitive (at least based on how I read it).

Also wouldnt they be able to comment now that it's resolved? The article says they still aren't able to speak to it which says to me that it's not over

They wanted no part of the "rev share for players" pandoras box he opened up on them yesterday.

Rest assured, as a genuine man of principle, it was more than just a shot across the bow at the NCAA, but something he believes in as well.

The NCAA punishes and negotiates exactly like I punish and negotiate with my 14 year old daughter:

Me (NCAA):   "That's it... 6 days without your phone"

Daughter (Harbaugh):   "No...."

Me:   "Ok, wise-ass, make it 4 days then"

Daughter:   "Tell you what, I decline your 4.... it's a self-imposed 3"

Me:  "Oh... Ok... hard-ball... well I just told your Mom and we are going to think on this and it might end up being more than 6.  We will let you know next week what we decide"

Me:   "Ok.... 3 .... don't do it again"

No, but its 2 weekends less than everyone else to recruit guys in nice weather with hopefully blow out wins, in a fun atmosphere... are you serious? you think they are fans? recruits commit when teams lose, get blown out, etc... not having recruits to start the year is a big deal. for 2 out of 7 home games, yeah. not good. especially for guys who may be fringe guys trying to see if they want to come back later or who may be already booked later in the season.

This is probably more the NCAA's style:

NCAA - "We're offering a 4 game suspension."

Warde - "That's fine but..."

NCAA - "Too late, it's off the table. And because you back talked, we're going after Sherrone also."

Warde - "But..."

NCAA - "You just lost the first two games for recruiting. Do you want to say anything else?"

This should have been Michigan's style at the beginning:

Warde - (on the golf course with Harbaugh after answering  his phone) "Jim, it's the NCAA. Something about hamburgers?"

Harbaugh - "Hahahahaha. Just hang up on them."

The article simply does not say that the Harbaugh issue is resolved. It is not.

The "negotiated resolution" relates only to Moore and the loss of two recruiting weekends.

I read the article more than once. I don't see anything regarding a final resolution, just an additional penalty regarding recruits being hosted at the first 2 games.

I would love to be wrong. Am I missing something?

Per Angelique, it didn't sound like it was resolved, just that we were losing recruiting weekends. If there really is no more, however, then this is still a net win for Michigan and Jim Harbaugh. Mor to come, I suppose.

This is textbook “if you give a mouse a cookie” behavior from the NCAA.

They are a dying, increasingly irrelevant organization that is desperate for a major win, desperate for an optics victory. One that at least creates the illusion that they are still in control, and in order to do that, they need to go after schools that still allow them to do so. Michigan, for whatever reason, is still one of those schools.

If anyone thinks this is over, they are only kidding themselves. While I am a bit of a cynic, I still believe the NCAA wants to take as much from Michigan as it can. Wouldn’t shock me to see them trying to slap a bowl ban on Michigan next year.

Bowl ban is a stretch.  If the NCAA decided not to levy that on Tennessee after over 200 violations including 18 Level1s, this seems highly irrational/unlikely.  But then again, when does logic ever prevent the NCAA from irrational acts.  Who knows, but I'm with you on their intent.
