Pep Hamilton -- New Title? New Responsibilities

Submitted by ChalmersE on

Per Maize n Brew, he's now "Assistant Head Coach/Passing Game Cooridnator/Quaterbacks and Wide Receivers Coach".  That's how he's listed in the Atheletic Department Directory.

You defended Borges until the very end. He is objectively bad college OC based on results and his career at and post Michigan to include recruiting, play-calling, and scheme. You are defending Pep in a similar manner. Not sure what you think of Drevno. These coaches have been in charge of some of the worst offenses in college football during their tenure, some of the worst offenses in modern Michigan history. What would it take for you to believe a change should be made on the offensive staff? Your take seems to be "the HC knows best". Ask Rich Rod, Hoke and a thousand other HCs how that turned out. Even Harbaugh has blind spots.

But when people like you sit here and claim things like "he doesn't know how to run Power" or "he doesn't attack the flats" or "he never breaks tendencies", you are flat out wrong. That's what I defended him against, that's what I'm defending Drevno and Pep against. A bunch of people make ludicrous claims about football basics and these coaches not understanding them and have no understanding about what actually goes into coaching football. They see about 3% of what actually goes into coaching, have no real knowledge of that 3%, demonstrate that lack of knowledge, and think they know best on staff decisions.

So pick apart indivual plays all you want. You don't know what the primary problem is. I don't know what the primary problem is. The problem may be gameplanning, it may be season planning, it may be coaching. Play calling may not be great, but I can promise it is lower on the list of problems. That was my position then and it's my position now. If the head coach, who is privy to much more information and has a hell of a lot more knowledge then a person that makes the claims above believes he is best served to fire a coach on his staff, then by all means he should do it. But making hyperbolic claims that aren't rooted in fact is a BS approach.

Your're right, I don't know EXACTLY what the problem is.  I don't think it really matters all that much.  Where is the accountability for people being paid millions of dollars to coach "amateur" sports?  I'd probably have a lot lower blood pressure if I took your approach of "coaches always know best".

Whatever. Just win. Harbaugh's track record entitles him to the benefit of the doubt, but 2017 (coupled with the handful of plays in 2015 and 2016 that would have made the difference between no championships with a 1-5 record against rivals and a likely 2016 B1G Championship with a 3-3 record against rivals) pretty much ate up his margin of error.

So if he wants to go all-in on Pep, then all I have to say is this had better work.

The timing is odd. The season ended many weeks ago, and there has been lots of time to try to find a sufficient upgrade. That time has passed, and for whatever reason, we were not able to find an adequate replacement or willing to buy out his large salary. I understand that sometimes youth and weaknesses need time to be turned into strengths, but giving a title upgrade after an objectively terrible performance does not show that this thing is a meritocracy.

In 2017 the offensive line consisted of:

a Center (Cole) who was playing LT

a Left Guard (Bredeson) who is probably a RT

a Center (Kugler) who is not an NFL talent and who was probably playing by default

a RG (Onwenu) who may have gotten beat out by a true freshman

and a revolving door at RT.

They need some dudes to step up in this department and I think everything improves.

If he was/is a good option at right tackle, wouldn’t he have played there? Between Runyan and Ruiz, we had other viable options in the interior even early in the season. Seems like he would have been at right tackle if he was clearly an upgrade there. If he is a viable option at right tackle, I think that would bode much better for next year because Onwenu, Ruiz, Spanellis and Runyan. In that case the on;y glaring hole would be left tackle. Since this is not how most speak of our line next year, I come back to, why the confidence in Bredenson at right tackle? With regards to Onwenu, wasn’t he hurt and not beat out? He actually seemed to get a fair amount of accolades as a decent right gaurd.

Another way to make this argument is last year 3 OL left after the season to be on NFL teams, this year it's only Cole. Surely haveling 60% of the line made up of NFL talent will produce a better offense than only 20%. Not to mention that 2 wrs went to the NFL, this year it will be 0. And 1 rb, with this year TBA if Isaac winds up on a practice squad. Yes this year's offense probably had higher rated recruits, but none of them are NFL ready.

"Upgrades" in title don't necessarily indicate a real expansion of actual responsibility. Especially if there is no corresponding increase in remuneration, it may indicate the opposite. May well be nothing to be concerned about.

so I'm hopeful last year wasn't all Pep and it was some systemic things. On the flip side, the drop off from a Jedd offense to a Pep offense seemed noticeable.

As a former coach, I've had seasons that we just went through "growing pains." However it was not my job to keep coaching them at a pee wee level because that is what they knew and they could do it better. My job was to keep teaching them as they would if they were accepted into colleges and some were, i.e. Ferris, GV, et. al. After experiencing a season like this - we didn't have losing seasons - just disappointing ones, they would bounce back because they were suddenly more experienced, or as experienced as those defending them. Oh yeah, a year can make a hell of a difference and I think if you start "coming down to their level" as if the defense isn't going to catch on to that as well, then you are making a huge mistake and shouldn't expect much growth the following year. As many wise posters have said, "Harbaugh knows far more about this game than any of us and he is the one chosen to lead us." If we were that fucking good at calling the game, maybe we'd be in AA and Jim would be writing about us. Not certain.

You can do whatever you want I’m just sick of all the bitching about it and we can both have our opinions on it. Maybe the qbs were just not that good, and the oline needs to play up to their level. They were pretty young. I also know it’s not good just to fire coaches every year as it takes time to gel and new coaches bring new schemes and change all over.

Has also won as many P5 conference titles as most of us on this board have. He is more than qualified but he's not some football coaching demigod. The Hamilton promotion here is questionable based on last season but if this year goes pear shaped and Hamilton is retained, then we absolutely must question what the hell Harbaugh is doing

The only thing that concerns me with harbaugh is the qb. Peters was his first qb recruit and I’m not really impressed but it’s pretty early. You also have to be realistic in my opinion it’s just a different time. He will get his wins and championships if he stays, but no matter who is the coach of osu they are going to consistently recruit top 5 talent because of the state they are in. It’s not realistic to win every year in the big ten east. It’s also not ok to be 1-5 against the two teams we hate. But before he came here there was a decade of complete garbage that he walked into, whereas Ohio just seemed to still recruit top 5 nationally every year even through the loss of their coach and msu reaped the benefits of this programs misfires. Just need to win it cures all

Can he have any more titles! I'm very disappointed the JH didn't cut his ass loose after the cluster fuck he helped produce last season. I was really hoping he was cut loose, something tells me the fact Enos left is the reason he's still at UofM. Disappointing!

this could be an annual thing with Pep.  I don't get a sense he likes the college ranks given how Wilton described his approach to coaching (as all business, stoic).  Enos bolted once he knew that the pass-game coordinator title was not going to happen this year.  And now in comes Roundtree to help with the WRs, which is a good addition as a grad assistant, but not a position coaching veteran like Zordich is for the DBs.  Pep knows how to coach both QBs and WRs, but that is too many people for one guy and a grad assistant to cover.  Especially since the WRs are so young.  Brown has veteran coaches at every position.

What is our offensive identity for 2018?  The coaches need to get on the same page in what went wrong last season and get after what needs to change to make sure it doesn't happen again.  I think Warinner was hired to provide an independent assessment of the offensive issues and to help develop improvement strategies.  The new S&C coaching staff will address the shortfalls JH called-out at the end of last season.  Expect our OL to get leaner and a lot stronger in 2018.  Michigan Football twitter is posting 6am workouts - old school.  Go Blue !!!

Wait and see.  This year will be another great opportunity.  Top defense and a decent amount of skill on offense.  Been hopeful for the past 40+ years.  2018 won't be any different.  If it's similar to 2017, then I think it's pretty clear changes need to be made.

GO BLUE!!
