Darius Morris Michigan Memories

Darius is Dreaming – The Knicks of the Nineties

Saddened to hear of Darius Morris' death - hopefully he's in a better place now. Share some D-Mo memories in his honor. His steal and behind the back pass to Stu Douglass for the jam in the Big Dance vs TN will always stick with me. RIP.

From someone who graduated in 2011, Darius Morris was the first great in a long line of great Michigan point guards under Beilin. RIP! Love watching his game and remember being sad to see him enter the draft as soon as he did.

When he told Kalin Lucas to “Get the F off my court” as he dribbled through the D and finished the game off in style.

Alright, I'll be the one to say it. I don't feel right seeing all the praise without at least mentioning the awful. While it's tragic he passed at such a young age, let's not forget the man also beat his ex girlfriend to a pulp.

Quoting:

"Morris was arrested in April 2020 on charges of assault, harassment and obstruction of breathing or blood circulation involving Summer. He allegedly repeatedly kicked and hit her and put his hand over her mouth, according to a criminal complaint.

Morris also was separately charged with violating an order of protection against her when he reportedly showed up in the hallway outside of her apartment a few weeks after the alleged attack."

An article from news sources on allegations but no confirmed results/convictions anywhere that I can find. Can we not be victim shamers but ask for some sort of official final verdicts in situations like these? A New York post online article on "allegations" cant be enough to hate someone for eternity can it? I know this gets messy so let me be clear I dont stand by anyone guilty of any of this crap but we of all people should understand the potential of clickbait and "alleged" and "sources" have the potential to be shady.

This is why clearly beating someone to death leads to either a conviction or questions. One or the other. Please read.

After speaking with Morris' camp, we were contacted by the accuser, who now says she made the whole thing up and doesn't want to see Morris prosecuted.

Unclear what caused the change of heart -- she told us, "It's private, none of it's true." The accuser also says she will go to the D.A. to drop the case against Morris.

Seriously people on the day of his death I had to dig several several pages in to find this. I will be downvoting which is something I never do. RIP DM I hope this brings you some peace.

As a veteran criminal defense lawyer, M Law '91, 7 yrs a PD + 24 yrs private practice, there is little that can be understood in domestic situations based on the initial report OR when there is a recantation.  No meaningful inferences can be drawn.  Press reports are notoriously erroneous.

Domestic situations are incredibly complicated and every relationship is messed up in their own unique ways.  Cycles of emotion.  Cycles of violence.  Cycles of manipulation.  Hard to tell the difference unless there is some significant injuries, and even then you cannot be certain.  I've seen a lot in my day.

If the story weve been told all along with the pictures are true you send this man to jail and throw away the damn key. This isnt how the system works. You dont have someone beaten within an inch of their life and the DA to go "Oh well whatya going to do she dropped the charges". This just doesnt pass the sniff test.

The prosecutor can proceed with the criminal case if they feel they have evidence to prove their case. It does not matter whether or not the victim wants to press charges for domestic violence. It is up to the prosecutor to decide whether to move forward with a criminal case based on the evidence

The assault was recorded on an incredibly dark and disturbing video that was leaked and still available on IG and Reddit. I don't care to post it for a variety of reasons but I do agree with the above post that it feels very wrong to pretend it didn't happen.

Just a second ago he was a convicted domestic abuser but now its audio and some video footage of a couch. I dont know if its real or not but is today the day to convict the man on some audio recordings that none of us can verify after I just had to dig DEEEEEP to find her retraction of the accusations? Maybe, maybe not.

Logged in just to say this. A sin is a sin is a sin. Sad that you feel its your place to point out someones mistakes that cant defend themselves, you too one day will be held accountable for all of your sin /Poor choices as will I as I am amongst the worse. Repentance and having a Savior is the only way you, me, DM or anyone else is getting out of it.

My favorite memory of D-Mo in hoops is his determination not to let the Duke game get away from us.  They had a lead hovering around 8-14 for nearly all of the second half and without fail he would make a play that kept us in it until we could make a real push.  This included a Jordan-esque fadeaway and a couple of absolute dimes to J-Mo for flushes.  He deserved to have that floater fall to tie it but the basketball gods were just not having it.

Dude, the man died. You know what? You could post other negative things about Darius, 'Michigan Memories' as the title of the post states that weren't a good reflection of who he was. That could happen at anyone's eulogy, or here. There's always an incomplete picture of the deceased, but decorum calls for those negative memories to be put on the back burner. The man died; I choose to think of the good memories I have of Darius, knowing full well he had regrettable episodes in his life, too.

RIP Darius

Holy shit. He literally got me into Michigan hoops. I’ve had this profile picture since the day I joined mgoblog. I’ve always skewed more as a basketball fan and that 2011 team is a big part of that. He started an impeccable decade of elite PG play at Michigan. Him, Burke, Walton, and Simpson all in a row. RIP.

He and I were briefly in the same discussion section for Bacon's History of College Athletics class (how he got in there as a freshman I'll never know).  During the "go around and introduce yourself" thing there was kind of a murmor when it got to him.  The GSI was confused but DMo played it really cool

In any case, anyone who takes JUB's classes knows his policy is "if the paper is due at noon and you try to give it to me at 12:01 then it's a zero".  So the afternoon it was due I had printer problems and was literally running to get to Dennison in time when I get passed by Darius doing the same thing.  He got there a little quicker than I did (okay a lot quicker haha)

On the court I remember how much he struggled his freshman year.  But he stuck it out and was elite the next year.  Best distributor Michigan has had under Beilein/Howard.  He and Jordan Morgan had great chemistry

Having worked in education, I hate when other teachers/professors do this.  It's BS, acting like the entire world revolves around your class.  The most important thing is not that the kid meets some arbitrary deadline, but that they show they learned the material.  You should never have a penalty so severe that it discourages the kid from doing the assignment altogether.

Well from his perspective, in the real world, and especially in journalism, that's kind of the way it goes.  If your boss tells you she needs something by 5 and you don't have it then you've got problems

I see what you're saying but I don't think that deadline would discourage anyone from doing the assignment in this case.  We had at least a month and had to meet with him and a GSI at points to look at a draft and for feedback and advice etc.  This isn't like he told us on Tuesday that we had an esssay due Thursday.

My cool story, D-Mo:  While I was at Ross, I spent winter and spring breaks meeting/interviewing with companies in LA/OC and since he was the first high profile recruit to sign with JB, I looked up their schedule and went to several of his games.  Got to sit in the stands alongside Denzel as his kid was on the team too.  Wearing M gear, Darius noticed me before or after one of the games and I told him how excited we were to have him at Michigan.  He was excited to see an M fan at his games and we chatted for a few minutes.  He always acknowledged me at each game after that and he gave me his email to send him some videos that I grabbed for the M sites and was excited about them when I shared them with him.   When I did eventually work in LA and he was on the Lakers, I got to work with him on a small deal and he was appreciative.  Was always a super nice and polite kid in my interactions that was so appreciative/surprised at the interest and support that he received from Michigan fans.

GET THE FUCK OFF MY COURT

That jumper against Duke that would’ve tied the game up at the end of the game. So freaking close to going in….

They fought ALL THE WAY BACK in that game.

Damn, RIP. This was the first true baller we had when things turned around, the program owes him a lot. In my opinion he made it cool to go to michigsn again. Sad to hear this. R.I.P. King

Agreed - you wonder the alternate universe where he doesn't commit, do the guys like GRIII & Burke want to come to Michigan?  Does anyone have confidence in JB after that 09-10 season if there is not the optimism around DMo's potential and the new class coming in.  He was really the foundation of the JB era and it likely never reaches those heights without him choosing to leave LA and come to A2.  It's also fun to remember that he was the prototypical PG for JB's 1-3-1 defense - his height and length allowed him to run along the baseline.

Big Ten 'The Journey' episode on Darius.  Nice story about him and his HS friend, Dan Tan. Hopefully he's with DT again.

Naturally the B10 puts together a heart-warming story for the profile and then finishes the profile by showing Michigan lose to Wisconsin at home.  They really know how to spotlight their moneymaker.

I thought he made a mistake going pro one year too early. But it opened the door for FR Trey Burke to step in. I was glad Trey stayed for year 2 and led us to the finals. Maybe Trey saw that Darius didn't go as high in the draft and got limited playing time. RIP as a Michigan Man!
