OT: Disney imagineers building Americana park
Some former Disney Imagineers have been contracted to build an "Americana-themed" 125-acre amusement park off of Route 66 in Oklahoma.
American Heartland will have 6 distinctly themed areas that each tell a different part of "the American story."
Maybe I'm underestimating the South but why on earth would anyone want to visit this place? For one, you could just actually tour AMERICA if you're already here AND how the fuck do you talk about the American story without acknowledging how deeply fucked our history is?
I can't imagine that they'll have a zone about slavery, or colonization, etc. Maybe they can have a theme with Washington crossing the Potomac, but, again, you can go fucking see the Potomac - it's IN America, lol. Seems a little odd to me, but then again that Noah's Ark park is still open and operating in Kentucky so I'm sure the park will do well. Maybe they can get Garth to promote it.
Politics aside, I view this as a cedar point for the heartland. Just not sure the heartland has the population to support this like the great lakes region does with Cedar Point.
Theme parks are not replications of the sites that inspire them, they are tributes. I know I can go see where Washington crossed the Delaware, but can I ride a roller coaster across the Delaware?
Of course they won't have an "It's a slave world" ride there is nothing to celebrate about shameful things. It's important to teach and learn those lessons but that is outside the nature of an amusement park. Celebrating the good is not the same thing as ignoring the bad. The German Pavilion at Epcot center in Disney World doesn't fly Nazi flags, are they ignoring history too?
I'm looking forward to planning a trip to Oklahoma specifically for this, because many people in today's world think that there is ONLY ugliness in American history and always ignore the good.
"I love my country, because it is mine."
A conservative’s vision of DisneyWorld. Call it what it is.
You can throw in all the other reasons that you want. Job creation, bringing the entertainment industry to new territory, reducing costs for Heart Lane families who can’t travel to Disney World, but the main reason is pretty plain.
Many Americans today have certain, shall we say, pointed opinions on Disney. It’s films, it’s parks, it’s approach to certain cultural subjects. And many of those Americans are adamantly against what Disney claims to stand for. So they’ve decided “Fine, we’ll go make our own DisneyWorld. One that reflects what we believe in.”
And that’s fine. We don’t all have to agree with one another on everything. Oklahoma is entirely within its rights to build something like this. Heck, it may even be a fun place to go to after it’s built.
But I’m going to call it what it is.
You're going to call it what you think it is.
I logged in for the first time in months (even had to go through the password re-set process) just to say that Dennis is the worst poster in the history of MGoBlog. Congratulations on being so awful at such a high level. Truly an accomplishment.
I'm confused and a bit fascinated by your use of block quotes.
He quotes himself which would make for a good SNL skit. The person who speaks in self-quotation.
what a weird thing to get worked up about.
I had pancakes for breakfast today. Probably ate a little too much, but they were delicious.
Perhaps the OP has an idea here. He could create a theme park that celebrates all the embarrassing, crappy and problematic parts of America.
BuckeyeLand?
I live in Kansas and am very excited to have a cool spot that's not forever away for the kids.
I'm also in Kansas, with a son in Norman, Oklahoma. I can pretty much guarantee we'll take the grandkids sometime. Politics be damned, it's a theme park. Ought to be pretty good for making memories with the littles.
I also live in Kansas and I'll go to this park. Plus it will be close to Grand Lake which is a nice area to camp and fish.
...We're so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside. There behind a glass stands a real blade of grass. Be careful as you pass, move along, move along...
...Come inside, the show's about to start
Guaranteed to blow your head apart
Rest assured you'll get your money's worth
The greatest show in Heaven, Hell, or Earth
A lot of talent that burned out too soon. Went belly up due to overly elaborate traveling stage show backdrops so I hear.
Yes, but Emerson Lake & Palmer definitely left their mark. One of my very favorite live videos is "Fanfare For the Common Man", recorded in bitter cold conditions at Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

cool, thanks
Fuck this fucking post
I'm sorry this is happening to you
I remember when I was 11 in the fall of '74., We were suppose to have Cedar Point 2 built near Adrian but it never happened. Also, in the late 70s, Space World amusement park was suppose to be built. SE MI, needed a good amusement park. Bob-a-lo was kind of small but a fun boat ride over to the Canadian Island. Once it closed, or went down hill in the 90s, Metro Detroit could have used a big amusment park.
Interesting, I never heard of this but here it is.
Oh fergodsakes what utter nonsense!! I unfortunately have only 1 down-vote.
I want to down vote the OP so badly. However, I just can't bring myself to push the needle.
I miss football.
Only 41 days to go---and OT season ending in just over a month.
Glad to see a -70 neg vote on an America hater from a fairly progressive sports board.
Truth be told, celebrating Americana was kinda the original point of Disneyland. Victorian Main Street, Tom Sawyer Island, The Carousel of Progress.
Of course some of American history is very ugly. Some of our beloved University of Michigan's history is very ugly. Some of the history of the Democratic Party is very ugly. (or "fucked" as the less erudite insist on saying)
They should have a section celebrating slaves (not slavery, the enslaved people). A big failing of the presentation of American history is the failure to promote tourism at what preserved slave sites exist (some plantation sites in South Carolina, for example) as much as tourism is promoted at places like Mt Vernon or Gettysburg. A similar section recognizing our native peoples would be appropriate as well, especially in OK.
Sadly, some people look at our history and want to make it a divisive force in contemporary America and somehow want to believe that the ugly part of American history makes contemporary America a bad place rather than something for us to collectively learn from to improve individually and as a nation.
Yep, this blog leans hard left, mostly libs here unfortunately. To see OP curb-stomped so badly gives me a glimmer of hope for the country! Anyway, I want more football and less political partisanship!
Why don't you virtue signal a little harder? I mean you forgot systemic racism on your sjw bingo card. If there isn't a market for it, it won't survive. It's really that simple. Maybe there's a market for people who want to go a park that celebrates the country instead of getting hung up on every negative part of our complicated history and preaches that propaganda. If people want that, they can consume Disney products. There are choices for everyone. The amount of self righteousness and condescension on this board is laughable.
I approve and appreciate this message!!
