Recreate the PACC 12...er whatever number it would be

either embed the tweet or summarize it

What you don’t prefer just “Big if true”?
September 27th, 2023 at 2:55 PM ^
"Substantial, if veracious"
September 27th, 2023 at 2:37 PM ^
or, preferably, neither.

Summary of tweet: it is being reported that Clemson thinks it’s found a way out of the ACC Grant if Rights.
you know, like the title said.

Rhetorical question for the OP: Who the *$^% is Marc Ryan?
Why not link to what he referenced?

Better yet, go straight to what that guy referenced:
For a second I thought I was in an EC Tweet storm about the Pac-12 implosion.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:29 PM ^
Great, we have multiple tweets leading to an article that's locked behind a paywall. Can anyone here actually access the article to see if there's anything to the rumor this time, or if it's the usual speculation?
September 27th, 2023 at 2:51 PM ^
It may not matter. Lots of attorneys have looked at ways to get around the grant of rights and have come up dry. I'm not saying it won't happen but I'm a bit of a skeptic until there is more than a Tweet or whatever it is called in X.

September 28th, 2023 at 12:37 PM ^
Yep. Tell it to the judge, Tigers.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:23 PM ^
I imagine that FSU and Miami, if not sharing counsel, were CC'd on the details.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:36 PM ^
I bet you're right about that. On the other hand, how much would FSU be willing to pay for the details? Just my natural greed coming through.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:31 PM ^
If true, here comes three 20+ member conferences and good knowing you, ACC. Yay ...
September 27th, 2023 at 2:31 PM ^
September 27th, 2023 at 2:39 PM ^
You can't see Clemson moving to the Big 12? Ok... I couldn't see Cal (as in University of CALIFORNIA) moving to the ACC (ie: ATLANTIC COAST Conference), either. But, ya'know...
September 27th, 2023 at 2:42 PM ^
I thought the point was that it wouldn't make sense to bother leaving the ACC for the Big 12, i.e. it's not really a jump in prestige.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:47 PM ^
The Big 12's TV contract is no better than the ACC's - and they aren't desperate to find a landing spot anywhere like the Bay Area schools were.
September 27th, 2023 at 4:58 PM ^
September 27th, 2023 at 2:40 PM ^
Where Clemson goes is a good question. I don't see the B1G or SEC wanting them, really. Maybe the B1G if they need a 4th along with FSU, Miami, and ND. I would think that Clemson would have made sure they have a landing spot if they're trying to get out of the ACC, but it's totally possible they could be assuming they have one without knowing for sure.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:37 PM ^
The only reason I care about this is because it's a huge middle finger to ND. They convinced the ACC to share some $$$ to bring in Stanford and Cal, who are not good at football things right now, and still refused to join the conference. So, if FSU, Clemson, Miami and UNC leave, Stanford and Cal will be in the same situation, just on a different coast.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:42 PM ^
I bet the PAC-2 would welcome both back to a West Coast conference... The PAC-4 would love to have them!
September 27th, 2023 at 4:14 PM ^
Agreed. My only interest in this is if it screws ND and their stupid football alliance with the ACC.
September 27th, 2023 at 4:21 PM ^
Stanford and Cal wouldn't be in the same position. The ACC currently has 15 members. If 4 teams leave and Stanford and Cal join you still have 13. That's more then enough for a conference. In addition, the ACC has a tv contract that pays way more then whatever Stanford and Cal would get if they tried to salvage a conference with WSU and OSU.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:42 PM ^
In other words, Clemson paid some lawyers a lot of $$$ to come up with some "novel" way out of the GOR.
Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. Who knows, it's basically going to just be lawyers arguing with each other.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:43 PM ^
"...just be lawyers arguing with each other."
And collecting all the money.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:45 PM ^
Didn't someone on this board say a long time ago that the Grant of Rights could be nullified if they added more teams?
September 27th, 2023 at 2:53 PM ^
Seems suspect:
- Wouldn't all teams have the option?
- Why now and not 3-6 months (UCLA & USC) or 20 months ago (UT and OU), when realignment was announced?
September 27th, 2023 at 3:48 PM ^
1) Assuming its true, yes, all teams would have the option - Clemson might just be the first domino and/or the most prized, so makes sense for them to jump ship first
2) Could be some triggering event or even just took a crap load of time to research the an out that they were comfortable with
September 27th, 2023 at 2:56 PM ^
Hard to imagine Clemson would be a Big Ten candidate. Not a good academic fit (FSU would be better). I'd think SEC.
September 27th, 2023 at 2:57 PM ^
I honestly don't care where Clemson ends up, as long as it's not in the Big 10.
I really hate these conference realignments. Football should be regional.
September 27th, 2023 at 4:29 PM ^
Like Rutgers and Oregon?
The regional ship has sailed.
But I also don't care where Clemson goes, including if it is the Big Ten. It's all going to the same place eventually and it's not these conferences in the NCAA.
September 27th, 2023 at 5:10 PM ^
Clemson is not in the AAU, so the chances of them coming to the Big Ten are tiny.
September 28th, 2023 at 9:46 AM ^
100% this. Football (and sports) should be regional. The only hope is that the conferences get so big that they can recreate the regions.
September 28th, 2023 at 11:02 AM ^
That's what I'm pulling for. At this point I'm hoping that realignment accelerates as fast as possible to consolidate everyone into some superstructure that can then regionalize everything again. Or at the very least regionalize the non-revenue sports.
September 27th, 2023 at 3:15 PM ^
If Clemson leaves the ACC, then the SEC is the natural destination. SEC probably also eyeing FSU and/or Miami.
...which would lead Notre Dame to opt out of their quasi-membership. Obviously getting ND to join the Big 10 would be good for us, and having USC in the conference probably makes that idea more attractive - but I'll also believe it when I see it.
September 27th, 2023 at 3:29 PM ^
September 27th, 2023 at 3:36 PM ^
Wasn't the "Bush Push" game with ND-USC at ND in early November?
September 27th, 2023 at 3:58 PM ^
September 27th, 2023 at 4:12 PM ^
Same day as Mario Manningham's game winning TD catch in the final seconds against PSU. That was glorious!
September 27th, 2023 at 5:02 PM ^
September 27th, 2023 at 4:19 PM ^
I'm not sure why the SEC would want Clemson since they already have USC (NTUSC). Isn't expansion primarily about expanding TV markets (and South Carolina isn't that big to begin with)? I would think that FSU might make a little more sense since Florida is a much bigger state.....about 4X the size of South Carolina.
September 27th, 2023 at 11:43 PM ^
Although the Big 10 is more about markets, the SEC is more about marketing their product (the best college level football).
And bitch about the SEC being overrated all you want but I'd guess the SEC has 10 of the last 15 championships with 5 different teams.
September 27th, 2023 at 3:27 PM ^
I hope this is true because I want to see the ACC implode or become infinitely less relevant.
September 27th, 2023 at 3:46 PM ^
I'm curious as to why you'd think this. In my mind, the ACC is the lesser of 2 southern evils with the SEC being more evil by several magnitudes.
September 27th, 2023 at 4:08 PM ^
I think we have been heading for two major conferences for awhile that just may tell the NCAA to pack sand and do their own thing. The less power the NCAA has the better. Additionally, the deals the ACC entered into are embarassing and don't blame anyone for wanting out. Finally, I want the dust to settle on all this conference stuff sooner rather than later. It is all about dollars at this point anyway so I would just prefer to reach the endgame which is probably two super conferences.
September 27th, 2023 at 3:48 PM ^
FSU will probably exit as well. Florida will try to block FSU to SEC
September 27th, 2023 at 5:06 PM ^
Same with Clemson. USC (not that USC) will likely try to block Clemson going to the SEC. Personally, I think they are a better fit in that conference but I wouldn't be surprised if they end up in the Big 10. For that matter, is the Big 12 out of the equation? They've become more resurgent as of late even though they are still 3rd or 4th fiddle to the Big 10 and SEC.
September 27th, 2023 at 8:05 PM ^
Since Clemson isn't an AAU member, it's not likely to receive an invite from the Big 10.
September 27th, 2023 at 11:22 PM ^
I'd have to believe Clemson has no interest in going to the Big 12. The per team media payout for the Big 12 is said to be roughly $31 million annually, a much smaller payout than what B1G and SEC schools will get.
Clemson, Florida St, and N. Carolina are openly pushing to leave the ACC because they have their sights set on the huge paychecks that would come with membership in the B1G or SEC. There's very little net financial gain in jumping from the ACC to the Big 12.
