Rhetorical question for the OP: Who the *$^% is Marc Ryan?

Why not link to what he referenced?

Better yet, go straight to what that guy referenced:

For a second I thought I was in an EC Tweet storm about the Pac-12 implosion.

If there’s a loophole, who else leaves the ACC? Stanford, Cal, and SMU are coming to the conference next year. If Clemson leaves - they’ll have 16 teams - plus ND in whatever capacity. Where would Clemson go? There seem to be two options - the SEC or the B1G - since I can’t see Clemson moving to the Big 12. If Clemson goes to the SEC. ESPN will have to fork over an SEC share - more money - to Clemson - since ESPN already has ACC and SEC football. It doesn’t open any new market - and, would look like a trade for more lucrative Clemson ve SEC games. Perhaps this opens things up for FSU and / or Miami - but - will Florida object? It will be interesting…. I’ll believe when I see it.

I think there are two aspects to this… and, the motivation for Clemson to leave the ACC would seem to be media contracts / monies. I don’t know if their media revenue would increase by going to the Big 12. Cal - which you noted (and fairly so) - seemed to be in survival mode - as was Stanford’s decision. It’s just my perspective.

Where Clemson goes is a good question. I don't see the B1G or SEC wanting them, really. Maybe the B1G if they need a 4th along with FSU, Miami, and ND. I would think that Clemson would have made sure they have a landing spot if they're trying to get out of the ACC, but it's totally possible they could be assuming they have one without knowing for sure.

The only reason I care about this is because it's a huge middle finger to ND. They convinced the ACC to share some $$$ to bring in Stanford and Cal, who are not good at football things right now, and still refused to join the conference. So, if FSU, Clemson, Miami and UNC leave, Stanford and Cal will be in the same situation, just on a different coast.

Stanford and Cal wouldn't be in the same position.  The ACC currently has 15 members.  If 4 teams leave and Stanford and Cal join you still have 13.  That's more then enough for a conference.  In addition, the ACC has a tv contract that pays way more then whatever Stanford and Cal would get if they tried to salvage a conference with WSU and OSU.

In other words, Clemson paid some lawyers a lot of $$$ to come up with some "novel" way out of the GOR.

Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't.  Who knows, it's basically going to just be lawyers arguing with each other.

Seems suspect:

  1. Wouldn't all teams have the option?
  2. Why now and not 3-6 months (UCLA & USC) or 20 months ago (UT and OU), when realignment was announced?

1) Assuming its true, yes, all teams would have the option - Clemson might just be the first domino and/or the most prized, so makes sense for them to jump ship first

2) Could be some triggering event or even just took a crap load of time to research the an out that they were comfortable with

If Clemson leaves the ACC, then the SEC is the natural destination. SEC probably also eyeing FSU and/or Miami.

...which would lead Notre Dame to opt out of their quasi-membership. Obviously getting ND to join the Big 10 would be good for us, and having USC in the conference probably makes that idea more attractive - but I'll also believe it when I see it.

Great points. The current contract with ND and USC states that USC will not play a game in South Bend after the third weekend in October. I look forward to USC playing in the Midwest in November. As for ND - it’s simple, allow them to schedule one (1) B1G opponent per season. It must be a “home and home” series. ND cannot play any B1G team more than twice per decade.

I'm not sure why the SEC would want Clemson since they already have USC (NTUSC).  Isn't expansion primarily about expanding TV markets (and South Carolina isn't that big to begin with)?  I would think that FSU might make a little more sense since Florida is a much bigger state.....about 4X the size of South Carolina.

I think we have been heading for two major conferences for awhile that just may tell the NCAA to pack sand and do their own thing.  The less power the NCAA has the better.  Additionally, the deals the ACC entered into are embarassing and don't blame anyone for wanting out.  Finally, I want the dust to settle on all this conference stuff sooner rather than later.  It is all about dollars at this point anyway so I would just prefer to reach the endgame which is probably two super conferences.

Same with Clemson. USC (not that USC) will likely try to block Clemson going to the SEC. Personally, I think they are a better fit in that conference but I wouldn't be surprised if they end up in the Big 10. For that matter, is the Big 12 out of the equation? They've become more resurgent as of late even though they are still 3rd or 4th fiddle to the Big 10 and SEC.

I'd have to believe Clemson has no interest in going to the Big 12.  The per team media payout for the Big 12 is said to be roughly $31 million annually, a much smaller payout than what B1G and SEC schools will get.

Clemson, Florida St, and N. Carolina are openly pushing to leave the ACC because they have their sights set on the huge paychecks that would come with membership in the B1G or SEC.  There's very little net financial gain in jumping from the ACC to the Big 12.
