OSU QB Recruit Quinn Ewers officially forgoing senior year and enrolling early at OSU

Most buckeyes seem to think he redshirts and waits till next year to start.
A redshirt sounds reasonable, but that really only comes into play if he were to stay for a 5th season...which is highly unlikely.

Their true freshman will play immediately and star. Somehow ours will take 3 years.

But what about missing his senior prom?
In my opinion the senior prom is one of the most overrated things in life, making six/seven figures to skip it is just a no brainer.

He'll clearly join the long line of successful NFL Ohio State QB's.

And here I am, a Chicago Bears fan, put in a position that feels really uncomfortable.
August 2nd, 2021 at 12:24 PM ^
I'll gladly be THAT guy. I hope Justin Fields is an EPIC bust and somehow worse than Mitchell Trubisky.
It's unlikely but I hope it happens. Then again, not many believed Dwayne Haskins would be AWFUL in the NFL but here we are. I quite like his new name: Dwayne Trashkins.

I prefer "Booty Cheeks" Haskins, or Ol Booty Cheeks as a prospector name.
I am a Bears fan and I hope Justin Fields is a bust and worse than Trubisky.

[Uncomfortable enough that it became a dreaded double post.]

While that used to be very funny and a great debate point against OSU, as we get closer and closer to the eventual retirement of Tom Brady we no longer shine at the QB position either. Right now I'd rather have successful college QB's winning against OSU than to have a talking point about NFL QB's that went to UM.
Also, as a Bears fan I'm hoping for their streak to end and Fields to be a huge success.

It's becoming more evident that the program should have allowed Carr to choose DeBord as successor... The line of qbs would likely have continued starting with Mallett.
August 2nd, 2021 at 12:00 PM ^
He could be LSU's next Heisman.

A little more than a decade ago I remember that the majority of people in sports media did not think it was a good look when Bryce Harper skipped his senior year to play in the minors. Now, look how things have changed.
Harper actually left HS after his sophomore year (by passing his GED), went JC in what would have been his junior HS year and was then draftable a year in advance.
You know me, buddy. lol

Holy fucking shit, what a fucking hair cut!
August 2nd, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
In Ohio, that is considered 5* hair.
That's a true trailer park hustla right there.

I'd do the exact same thing if I were in his position. He sees Bryce Young cashing in at Alabama and Young hasn't played a single snap yet. Ewers can probably make that kind of money too, if not moreso. He'd be stupid not to do this.
I'm not too worried about what he does to Michigan. Not because I don't think he's good, or that I think Michigan will find some way to beat or contain him. Its simply because there's nothing he can do to Michigan that Troy Smith, Terrelle Pryor, Braxton Miller, JT Barrett, Dwayne Haskins and Justin Fields haven't already done to Michigan countless times over throughout the last 15 years.
Do your worst, pal.

My biggest concern with these kids making this much money this young are these:
1) What does this do to their motivation? Will they still be hungry to succeed or will that much money make them feel... entitled and therefore slack off?
2) What are colleges doing to ensure these kids are surrounded by GOOD HONEST business managers? Its hard enough for many NFL players to manage their money so how much harder will it be for an 18 year old?
IDK the answer to your second point, that's definitely going to be an issue. But as to point one, if they don't continue to work hard and produce results, they either won't be playing or won't be producing many wins. That will cause their value to fall and they'll no longer have these lucrative opportunities. Next man up.
Perkis, a substantial nil offer from a company to Ewers is what started all this. Otherwise this probably doesn’t happen. As far as competing for the starter role, I don’t think he is a serious contender till next year. He still has the ncaa to approve his HS classes. Some are saying that could take several weeks before he could officially join the team and practice.

"Local Boy Moves to Ohio Early" seems like a risky move!
August 2nd, 2021 at 12:23 PM ^
The course work is probably easier at the community college they run for football players there than at his high school
Oh good lord, he we go again
We may have to (ever so slowly) acknowledge the relatively recent improvements of OSU in the realm of academia.
We do not, however, have to acknowledge they do anything except shunt players into online courses that are a joke and conceivably aren't even attended by the actual player.
August 2nd, 2021 at 12:28 PM ^
It will be interesting to see if he gets thrust into action this year. My opinion is it’s a big ask to have would-be senior play QB but knowing OSU, I am sure he will be in all-American form by November
Been reading that Stroud is that Stroud is the projected starter and tore it up in the Spring
August 2nd, 2021 at 12:33 PM ^
FWIW, rumors are that OSU doesn't actually want him to enroll now. They presumably want him to play his senior year and keep gaining experience / developing. This move is just from him trying to cash in (understandable) and if OSU doesn't acquiesce there's plenty of other schools thay would let him do this. I totally get it.
I was thinking this had to be the case. No way they would want to rush this thing, but NIL wins all now.
Tricky game OSU has to play now, I mean they have endless amount of talent, but I can totally see your point as true.
August 2nd, 2021 at 12:44 PM ^
Call me crazy (you can) but I actually think this is a good thing as a Michigan fan. They now essentially have 4 QBs that are all in the same class. CJ Stroud, Kyle Mccord, Jack Miller, and now Ewers all have 4 year of eligibility.
There may be some in fighting in the locker room in who everybody wants to win the job. Whoever wins the job, expect the other 3 guys to start looking at the transfer portal in the next 12 months.
He was going to be on campus in January anyway, it literally moved his arrival up by 5 months. The logjam and transfers were happening regardless of this decision. It has been discussed ad nauseum on OSU boards.
He also moved from a 2022 to a 2021 commit, which makes a difference for next year’s class which has no QB’s now. That could change, but I’d bet if a couple guys hit the portal next season it could end up hurting OSU for one season.
It's possible, but I'm good rolling the dice. Kid could be a total bust, but this is as can't miss as you can get. You worry about 2022/23 QB recruiting now, and if transfers hurt you, OSU has shown a track record of also making the transfers work for them. So I think it comes down to Day and company being like, you rock the boat and lose a once in a decade kid to probably have at least one QB transfer out anyway, or you take the once in a decade kid and deal with the transfers as they come, and look to the transfer portal to bring someone back in.
Every problem has a solution.
Go ahead and use up your eligibility. I'm totally okay with this.
Are we at a point where how we view Ohio State is similar to how Northwestern (for example) views us?
We simply are nowhere near their level of recruiting, and for the last 2 decades, have been little more than a tiny thorn in their side?
Northwestern has been a bigger thorn to us than we've been to OSU.
In our last twenty meetings with OSU (through 2019) we've won three games.
In our last twenty meetings with NW, the Wildcats have won four games.
Sadly, this is a stat you could have kept to yourself.
Thanks, Don.
Meh this is good for you guys, not so much for my Bucks. He isn’t going to start this year, and Stroud still has to be in school for another year after this one. He’s completely doing this for the NIL money, not for playing football. You’ll see him maybe two years and that’ll be it.
I’d be shocked if the #1 recruit in the class is ok waiting around for two years to start, no matter how much NIL money he has coming in.
I can't see him staying on the bench. This is a guy who was considered a generational talent by Texas high school football standards, which, whoa. His mechanics are off-the-charts good for a high school player.
I watched a couple of his complete games in the Texas H.S. playoffs last year. If he has one weakness, it's that he doesn't handle pressure that well, i.e. when he has to move and reset his feet in the pocket, he makes some panic throws into coverage (he was totally out of sorts in the state final when he wasn't getting clean pockets).
We ain't come to play hi skool.
You know the OSU difference is online underwater basket weaving vs real classes and a rabid fan base willing to overpay in NIL has a nice ring to it.
Don't you realize how dangerous it is to take your computer for the online class under water to weave baskets?
...it could be a matter of life and death!
Judging by the ridiculous mullet, his decision making isn’t his strong suit.
Assuming Stroud is the guy this year, McCord and Ewers battle for mop up duty. All three compete to start next year, and it wouldn't surprise me if the two runners up leave then. Such is life filling a position room with high 4* and 5* guys.
