New Head Coach Please

Submitted by Mineral King on March 3rd, 2024 at 6:15 PM

New head coach please. Thank you for trying Mr. Howard. This is the only route and it needs to happen now. Interim is fine to finish out but start the official search tomorrow morning. If not, I got nothing.

Then his entire staff needs to go if Warde doesn’t have the balls to fire Juwan. Eisley was a pg in the NBA so if he can’t recruit and coach talented guards then he needs to go too. I think Saddi was propped up by Beilein and Martelli is way beyond his best years. The lack of roster construction, lack of fundamentals and defense is on the entire staff. I’m afraid Warde is going to give Juwan a pass by bringing in a different staffer or two.

Until proven otherwise,I’m going to assume it will happen the day after Michigan’s last game. Warde is dumb but he can’t be that dumb to keep Howard.

He said that some time ago that he evaluates each sport after the season and I actually am glad that he does that, sometimes you don't want to be hasty. But my fear is he will allow mitigating circumstances to sway his judgement and with the promise of hiring new staff, Juwan will be back for another year. I just don't see any way to fix this leaking ship and I am certain that many players will either declare for the draft or hit the portal. In a sense thats not a bad thing as bad as they are but you need continuity to build a team, and you need some bench. Some of these guys could be good players with proper development but that seems to be sorely lacking or at least there seems to be a lack of accountability and pride.

Not sure why he’d come here. He’s near the top of the best conference in college basketball, and I don’t think basketball takes a backseat to football at Iowa State the way it does here. Why leave that to inherit the smoldering crater that is our basketball program?

I think we’ll have to roll the dice with some mid major coach that gets hot in March and parlays that into a jump to a power conference.  Beilein came here after winning the NIT and had been successful at the mid major level before that. I don’t know if there is a Beilein out there, but I think they should be looking at places like the CAA and the MVC for a coach that may be ready to take a step up.

I feel good Juwan is gone . Why? Cause the so called insiders think he's getting another year, and they've been wrong about everything this past year

What should the requirements be for a new coach?

At the top of my list is experience coaching in college basketball. I never realized how much that matters until watching Howard try to run NBA offense at the college level.

You also need a specific offensive system to recruit the fits. Guys like Dusty May would be disastrous at Michigan. We can’t get the guys in that can run that run and gun system. Nate Oats too. They don’t fit.

You need a solid X and O mid major coach who has developed, like JB, a knack for building winners with less. Then as Michigan’s NIL for basketball comes up things start to get better

I would love to have Iowa State's coach, McDermott from Creighton, or at this point any above average college coach with a pulse.  Howard is worse than Ellerbe.

Stop spending money. It’s all Warde cares about. Don’t buy tickets. Don’t buy basketball gear. Boycott the financials. Celebrate the athletes. Respect their effort. Hit Warde in the pocketbook.

Juwan should have enough respect for himself and the program to resign. You can’t go 3-16 in a weak B1G, capped off by 20+ point blowouts at the hands of the teams in 11th and 12th place, and think that you’re headed in the right direction. His shit worked when he had a team full of fundamentally-sound seniors and NBA-ready talent that could run it, but between poor talent identification and acquisition, bad roster management, and just plain old bad coaching and development, the whole program needs to just start over from scratch, and whoever comes in is going to need a 6 year contract guaranteeing they will have enough time to turn this catastrophe around.

At the end of the day, a successful college basketball coach is a teacher first and a tactician second, and Juwan just isn’t a good teacher.

Howard's team makes stupid plays at a rate I have never seen in even the worst Michigan teams of Ellerbe, Amaker, and Coach B's first few years. Just so many stupid, stupid plays that even a completely average NCAA coach would never let happen on his team. He is getting over 2 million a year for nothing.

OSU has fired their coach for less. That’s a team that with a few more breaks, could actually sneak into the tournament. But then again, OSU has shown multiple times over that its a cutthroat organization that will do whats necessary to win. Michigan…..has not.

Worst team in my lifetime by a very considerable margin, and yet somehow, I have no faith that Warde will make the call. If you want to give Juwan the dignity of finishing out the season then thats fine. You can argue that he deserves that.

But keeping him for another year? I don’t see any possible justification.

Why does he deserve that? Because he played here 30 years ago? Fuck that.  We had a chance to make a change, instill some new energy and maybe finish on a positive note.  OSU has shown that’s possible.  Instead we’re playing out the strings and gonna end with multiple 20+ point blowouts to bottom half Big Ten teams.  Nothing positive to point towards.

I have no idea as to what Warde will do. Our AD generally sits on his ass and twiddles his thumbs, but these are embarrassing losses, to not very good teams, in a bad conference is more than humiliating, it’s worst ever for our basketball program. I feels sorry for these kids. They deserve to be coached. Team chemistry looks terrible. No way Dug returns and I’d offer Reed and Cheddar to the Mac for players to be named later. What type of portal kid will want this experience? Even the most ardent Juwan defender has jumped ship at this point. People compare this to the Ellerbee era, but in reality, his teams were at least coached.
