NCAA Opens Investigation Into UM Scouting Opp and Stealing Signs
More than a rumor....ugh
October 19th, 2023 at 2:24 PM ^
Everyone who believes Alabama and Georgia haven’t scouted each other in season over the last few years stand on your ear please.
October 19th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
I know our AD can’t speak about the allegations, but is there anything against posting the actual notice? Would likely help squash rumors.
October 19th, 2023 at 2:39 PM ^
Plausible deniability can always be scouting for transfer portal candidates lol
October 19th, 2023 at 2:41 PM ^
This is absolute bullshit. The NCAA now has a petty vendetta against Michigan because hamburgergate did not turn out the way they wanted even though they violated policies by blabbing about it anyway.
Warde and Santa need to just flat-out tell the NCAA to pound sand and to file the conspiracy theories into the circular file and to investigate the people lobbing the allegations.
October 19th, 2023 at 2:44 PM ^
This is bogus. After the NCAA sat on their hands during the SEC pay to play scandals, the Tez Walker fiasco, Kansas bball scandals, reducing Ped State sanctions after decades of molestation occurring and being covered up, and the Harbaugh burger controversy, the NCAA can go F itself. Also if it’s an investigation how did MSU find out, are they the ones proposing this? The school who clearly has beef with UM? And will teams who cancel games forfeit cause is innocent till proven guilty out now? This is a crock of shit, plus by the time an investigation is likely over we’d have played our schedule and likely playoffs so who cares, remove the wins later but it’d have happened. My only hope is Harbaugh stays and isn’t pissed to go to NFL.
October 19th, 2023 at 2:50 PM ^
It’s time to stop F’n around and sue the NCAA for defamation. Come with hard evidence or keep our name out your mouth. Accusations? Of studying other teams tendencies ? That’s what you practice all week for numb nuts
October 19th, 2023 at 2:52 PM ^
This feels like blatant harassment and Warde should immediately demand the NCAA provide proof of any wrongdoing or kindly F off. What is annoying is that a vague public release containing the purposely provocative "sign stealing" language already adds fuel to the flaming pile of nothing burgers people try to bring out when when trying to equate Michigan to programs with actual moral and legal transgressions.
October 19th, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
UM should have told the NCAA to fuck off, fuck waaaay off a long time ago instead of playing along with their bullshit. Nobdy else gives a flying fuck what the NCAA thinks because, well they're toothless and why should they. We should be doing the same.
October 19th, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
Note to football teams: CHANGE YOUR FREAKING SIGNS. I know what play is being ran by looking at your formation and I only coach little league. What do they expect go happen when you run the same 10 plays during the game? THIS IS TOTAL BS. Mich coaches watches film so if you don't change anything thats on you. If your signs that simple change them. Running to snitch because you can't score. Come on man
October 19th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
I would think that teams would routinely switch up their signs in order to fight against sign stealing.
October 19th, 2023 at 3:18 PM ^
The rest of UM's opponents now have a lot more to worry about. They will be forced to change up their systems and waste practice time ironing out the wrinkles. Any advantage that we have hypothetically lost by having our "cover blown" will be more than offset by the how the opponent will have to respond to the very possibility that we have advanced intel.
Thanks NCAA!
October 19th, 2023 at 3:25 PM ^
I find it hilarious bit that the NCAA has "video proof" that UM knew the play an opponent would run, pre-snap, and that this points to sign stealing.
I'm dying to see that footage. Certainly, Seth would have some idea which play is in question having reviewed everything in depth for UFR.
October 19th, 2023 at 4:06 PM ^
That's like saying "TCU knew we were going to run a lot of duo. They're stealing our signs!"
October 19th, 2023 at 3:29 PM ^
Willing to bet Rutgers is one of the teams making accusations. During one of those after-the-qtr-coach-interviews, Greg Schiano is clearly trying to allude to something he believes Michigan is doing. Jane Coaston just retweeted it for those wanting to see. If I were one of these shitty programs in this conference not named OSU/PSU, I would probably more concerned with upgrading the talent on my roster, but that's just me. Sign stealing is not why these teams can't compete.
This also seems to be something coming from the B1G, and the NCAA is now investigating. The league is who brought the "evidence" to MSU showing that we "clearly knew the other team's plays". There's obviously no reason to respect the NCAA, but this isn't an instance of them "picking on" the program.
October 19th, 2023 at 3:40 PM ^
This is all so bad, and it sure seems to be true. Ffs Jim
October 19th, 2023 at 3:51 PM ^
If this is true, fuck the Big Ten. Michigan should go join the SEC, and there wouldn't be programs with little man syndrome.
October 19th, 2023 at 3:31 PM ^
Not how I expected BPONE to return.
October 19th, 2023 at 3:34 PM ^
If I was a player, I'd be pissed off. For seven straight weeks the national narrative has been, "Michigan hasn't played anyone," and now the NCAA is basically saying mid season, "We think you cheated against the nobody's you've played!"
October 19th, 2023 at 3:41 PM ^
Admittedly I've read only what's on this blog but I do find it hard to believe that Harbaugh would be running a vast network to steal signs. Especially if that activity were illegal. That being said, I fully expect the NCAA to F us because I do think the NCAA hates Harbaugh....lastly, wouldn't there be some sort of paper trail on this? Paychecks, videos, travel records....
October 19th, 2023 at 3:42 PM ^
So this is Dantonio's "secret formula", I assume?
October 19th, 2023 at 3:43 PM ^
if you're gonna make an accusation like this, put your name against it.
October 19th, 2023 at 4:23 PM ^
Why do that when you can hide behind daddy NCAA?
October 19th, 2023 at 3:58 PM ^
I feel bad for the players honestly. At a time where we should just be celebrating their success and reveling in their awesomeness, another controversy.
October 19th, 2023 at 4:08 PM ^
Is Urbz still an employee of OSU? Wouldn't that make him a rep of OSU? Isn't he at all these games for Big Fox Saturday? Is that illegal per the guidelines or is he not scouting? If he isn't scouting wouldn't he be a damned awful analyst? If they don't have concrete evidence to support this I am shocked it got to this level so quickly. Lets see what they have?
October 19th, 2023 at 4:31 PM ^
Didn't Indiana have a new OC literally coaching his 1st game against us? Didn’t they move the ball pretty well for a drive or 2 and hit us with a trick play? Didn’t our coaches adjust and completely shut them down for the rest of the game?
NCAA mite want to be careful what it wishes for a non university employed Harbaugh is an unmuzzled Harbaugh who can get an interview with any network on any size stage he pleases. Not to mention weekly NFL press conferences with daily media interaction.

Here is the verbiage from 23-24 NCAA D1 Manual:
11.6 Scouting of Opponents.
11.6.1 Off-Campus, In-Person Scouting Prohibition. Off-campus, in-person scouting of future opponents (in the same season) is prohibited, except as provided in Bylaws 11.6.1.1 and 11.6.1.2. (Adopted: 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94, Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 1/19/13 effective 8/1/13, 1/15/14)
11.6.1.1 Exception -- Same Event at the Same Site. An institutional staff member may scout future opponents also participating in the same event at the same site. (Revised: 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94, 10/28/97 effective 8/1/98, 1/19/13 effective 8/1/13, 9/19/13, 2/7/20, 6/30/21 effective 8/1/21)
11.6.1.2 Exception -- Conference or NCAA Championships. An institutional staff member may attend a contest in the institution's conference championship or an NCAA championship contest in which a future opponent participates (e.g., an opponent on the institution's spring nonchampionship-segment schedule participates in a fall conference or NCAA championship). (Adopted: 1/15/14, Revised: 2/7/20, 6/30/21 effective 8/1/21)

If this proves to be false I wonder if there are grounds to file suit against the NCAA for defamation. If so, Michigan should go after them for a boatload of money and try to bury them forever.
October 20th, 2023 at 9:38 AM ^
Doubt it because the NCAA hasn't actually "said" anything other than that Michigan is being investigated for sign stealing. It is not like they have come out and plainly stated that Harbaugh is a cheater, nor would they ever. Also though the NCAA knows that mere public opinion is enough so just by making the investigation public pretty well know that the media and other NCAA fans will pick it up and run with it. I mean, if Michigan was sending a staffer to physically attend and record future opposing teams' signs, then yea, that is against the rules. It seems like that would be an incredibly stupid thing to do. If Michigan sent someone who observed future opposing team signs and took notes about it, that would still be against the rules, but I would also have a hard time believing other programs do not do it as well. If the NCAA wants to get Harbaugh out of coaching college football, no doubt putting him through this bullshit would make jumping to the NFL look more and more attractive.

As a Patriots fan, I'm having some serious deja vu.
October 19th, 2023 at 6:22 PM ^
Please Retweet: I think I solved it! Harbaugh goes to Indy during suspension. He bumps into Walt Bell as he throws away Indiana's playbook. Right afterward Harbaugh calls Jaybaugh, who then in turn calls Minter! As we prepare all week for those plays, Indiana inserts another play in which that play scores 6 points. After not one play after that nets more than 20 yards, Indiana surmises there's no &()&&()$ way that Michigan could be this good. Harbaugh then trashed the evidence in the BIG HOUSE after the game, and one of our workers of 60+ years calls the NCAA reporting Harbaugh for intentionally stealing signs!!!
October 19th, 2023 at 7:01 PM ^
This accusation will only steal the will of the team. To say “you have to cheat to win” is a complete disregard for the talent and effort the guys have put in to be in this position. I look for greater determination in the play of our athletes.
October 19th, 2023 at 8:18 PM ^
There really should be hard evidence of something based on the actions taken. IE the BIG reaching out to opponents to inform them and see if they’d want to play UM.
this shouldn’t be that tough to put up the evidence of a “vast network”.
I want to call it pure BS bit I can’t help but think it seems odd for the BIG to take actions like this without something material. If there is nothing UM should go scorched earth.
October 20th, 2023 at 1:06 AM ^
That's my issue with the B1G, if you can confidently go to every member of the conference and "warn" them of Michigan's cheating, they you should know exactly what's going on and punish Michigan right away to prevent it.
If they have material evidence, why are they not releasing it and stopping the issue? There's nothing to gain by delaying unless you don't actually have evidence, just suspicions. If you only have that, you should shut the fuck up.
If this is nothing, and I'm pretty certain it is since it seems impossible to prove and also seems very minor and it's just been blown up. Michigan should go scorch earth with conference. They should release every aspect of the investigation. Publicly call out the B1G and those in charge and demand a public apology. Hell. I'd even threaten to sue them for defamation. You can't just whisper that Michigan is cheating unless you are 100000% certain you have an open and shut case against them.

This smells of a smear campaign.
Allegations that seem unlikely to be provable or disprovable. The NCAA immediately takes it up, but leaks it first to news organizations. It is immediately put into the realm of public opinion via "anonymous sources," where the NCAA and/or anonymous accusers can leak whatever they want, true or not, with impunity. But the accused is not allowed to respond in kind.
These are the sorts of slimy, underhanded techniques used by corrupt organizations.
Does the NCAA and part of the Big 10 want to get rid of Harbaugh and damage Michigan? Are they willing to use smear tactics and lawfare?
Why? Michigan's success? Michigan's ability in the age of the transfer portal to recruit away other teams' players? Harbaugh's opinions on what players should get? Some petty bureaucrats' personal dislike of Harbaugh and Michigan, and willingness to misuse organizational powers as a weapon?
I'm highly skeptical of this investigation so far.
