Mike MacDonald interviewing for Commanders head coaching job

This could start a bad chain of events of us.  Hope the Ravens have another young guy on their defensive staff with a chin strap beard that we can call.

Eh, I think in most of our minds, if Jim were to return to the NFL, he would try to take Minter with him. Either that or Minter is going to interview for head coach jobs.

You always hate to lose good coaches but rare is the Phil Parker lifetime coordinator award.

We have guys that have learned the system. That’s how you build and sustain a program.

I would like to see Harbaugh give us a few more years and really mentor Sheronne and the team for transition.

Harbaugh didn’t come back to Michigan to build it and leave the well dry.

Sherrone could just keep the Ravens defense structure going with new coaches. MacDonald and Minter are great but it’s not just them, it’s also the system. Think Michigan can benefit from slightly different scheme/playcalling within the system year-to-year as well

Also this scheme is spreading a bit so a larger talent pool to choose from. Giants run it with Wink who the Harbaughs know well; the UCLA to USC DC is a Ravens guy, too. Jim takes Minter with him and that’s another organization to hire from.

Edit: Wink just resigned from the Giants so some same scheme guys are available.

Really hoping Minter sticks for another year (at least) to groom the other D assistants as a replacement(s) to run the same D.  My hope was that Partridge might be the guy (smart and great recruiter) if Minter did leave this year but his gaffe during the CS investigation ended that possibility.......Maybe JayBaugh is ready for a step up?  Coach Clink?

That’s the thing, most of our defensive coaches have been around for the past 2-3 years. They’ve been part of that system and obviously have some sort of grasp on it if we did in fact want to keep it going.

Clink has been co-DC, though I don’t know exactly what those duties entail for him currently. There are other Ravens disciples out there. And of course you could always bring in someone from the outside that runs a similar 3-4 style defense and blend it. I wouldn’t be opposed to someone like Jim Leonhard bringing the 3-4 defense he ran at Wisconsin and blend it with what our staff has been running the past three years.

I know it is fashionable to hate on Glenn but I don't get it.  The majority of the team's payroll is on the offensive side of the ball.  The majority of the talent is as well.  Jimmy and Joe's matter - how would a Bosa look like added to this defense along with a true CB1 - it would change everything.

Name me the 4 best players after Aidan coming into this year on defense???

  • McNeil was a non descript solid DT (now he is actually good - surely that has nothing to do with AG)
  • Anzalone was a guy this fanbase was pissed that Holmes resigned last offseason (he is having a career year)
  • Joseph was a rookie just drafted prob 3rd best player on the defense as a rookie along with Aidan
  • Cominsky was a nice glue guy
  • You were tossing out an undersized 6th round LB as if he is a some draft jewel because he looked fun on hard knocks but this year barely plays because they actually have some talent

That's the list.  Best player was a rookie, next best a guy no one wanted (but will now say oh yeah we wanted Alex so badly back!) and 3rd best guy was a rookie, and Cominsky was a scrap heap find.

Now compare that to the offense.

Highest paid defensive players last year were injured Romeo Okwara, eventually cut Brockers, Will Harris, Amani Oruwawariye, and Mike Hughes.   This is a waste of air in football terms.  Harris is a DB5 on a championship team at best.

That's the list.  Anzalone came next.

They now have some young talent with Iffy (who took 3 years to convert position and start playing well), Branch, Campbell.  McNeil is developing nicely.  They need another draft heavy on defensive players.  Sutton is a CB2 on a good defense not a CB1 - ask Justin Jefferson. CJ has played 2.5 games this year.

Compare what Glenn is working with talent wise vs what Johnson gets to work it. His center and left tackle make big bucks, his QB makes big bucks, they went out and paid for a RB to pair with another RB drafted, they got a great TE, their 4th round WR is top 10 in the league, and supported by nice WR2 and WR3 type talent, and their RT is on a rookie contract but incredibly talented.  Aside stud guards and an elite WR2 they have everything in the talent department. It's good to be Ben Johnson.

The rooney rule is mostly a farce but saying that about Glenn implies there were no viable minority candidates to even interview which is just not true. I'm not a Lions fan but I saw he scored very well on the player survery among all coordinators leaguewide, my guess is he's well liked and that goes a long way. If lots of players are talking about a guy it's smart to kick the tires.

All I've ever heard about Parker is he just doesn't want to be a head coach. Does anyone have any more detail on why he never tried to branch out to a head gig? It's always been so weird to me since the Iowa style of winning can be done anywhere. Not bad, I don't think everyone needs to aspire for the very highest spot in their field, just fairly unprecedented.

If MacDonald gets that job (or any job) expect Minter to go to Baltimore to be his replacement, or for Jim to take him wherever he goes, if he decides to go that route.

Either way, I don't expect Minter to be in Ann Arbor next year.

less than 5% chance minter returns, regardless of what occurs tonight.  he may be the top pro DC candidate, not to mention the college teams thatll offer him head gigs.

youre right though that harbaugh/moore need to find a way to keep this current scheme going.  even if it means giving the keys to jay or clink or elston after getting the ravens tutorial

I agree. If a lot of the big pieces are moving on, then I would rather just start with someone that will bring their own staff. Fisch or DeBoer would be better at assembling a staff and they have already proven they can win as a head coach.

I like Moore, but I like him a whole lot better with Minter attached. Without that, I'd rather have one of the guys listed above. Moore would still be a good option, but the main selling point is the continuation of the previous few years. If coaches are leaving, then that is pretty much moot anyway.

What schools are looking for a new HC? That's usually nearly over by now and I never heard Minter's name mentioned for any of the jobs that were open. Losing him to the NFL seems like a real possibility, but he is still more of a college football coach, unlike Macdonald
