Michigan Scoreboard Hijinx

The new scoreboards are lovely, and I hope everyone enjoyed some of the antics as much as I did on Saturday. Where should we start?

  • The in-stadium DJ (DJ Skee and not special K) played a song called Skee Yee by Sexxy Red from an album titled "Hood Hottest Princess"
  • He also played Get Low by Lil' Jon and the East Side Boyz and since there are closed captions, fans got to see the words "Skeet Skeet" multiple times on the 170x60 video boards - which is fun.
  • To increase crowd noise, graphics saying "Coach Harbaugh Can't Hear You" were used in the 4th quarter. A nice touch

Now for the less ridiculous stuff.

  • The ads for other sports contests and tickets are fine, but I would prefer if that space was used for stats
  • The layout of team stats/game stats is hard to follow (going from top to bottom instead of left to right. Especially when I am looking at 3rd and 4th down conversions. A new layout is needed
  • I would have preferred to see how many YPC Michigan had, or how many overall yards Blake Corum had vs overall team yards per play.
  • Basketball games do this right by showing the stats for 10 players on the court. Football should be able to do this so we can see how many yards our top players have, what their averages are, etc.

That's all for now. Skeet skeet.

Loved the music choice. Had enough mix of old vs. new and variety of genres to make sure all the older folks in the stadium were staying into it but also enough to keep the students and younger fans & alumni bouncing.

Speaking of that, WBNS-TV in Columbus is reporting today on an updated account of Connor Stalions ticket purchases for Ohio State games in a field level area of the Horseshoe, Sec. 22, across from the Buckeye sideline

In all, 27 tickets were purchased for 12 OSU home games over the past three seasons, according to the report. The story emanates from an information request to the Ohio State Athletics Department ticket office about Connor Stalions ticket purchases.

Should have played Ace of Base The Sign or Telsa Signs at the end of the game.

I know the Lil' John song, never knew Sexxy Red was a thing.

I just worried about the score not the stats.

That weird bleep-bloop beats with screen effects thing they did (IIRC) in the first half weirdly kind of worked to get the crowd ramped up, but then they never did it again?

I continue to find the way they show stats to be confusing and somewhat counterintuitive. Also, they most definitely played the wrong video presentation for the Lloyd Carr feature. And the weird MAGA rock country interlude for one of the commercial breaks felt weirdly pandering and kind of odd.

In total, it's a great board, but the whole presentation feels really off. I remain frustrated that everything feels so scripted, as if no one is able to keep their attention without it. I wouldn't kill them not to fill every second of gap with some form of beat, sound, video, or gimmick.

The stats have been very annoying all year. I guess they're trying to show a lot of things that might be interesting, but it's so convoluted and counterintuitive that I don't even look to them anymore. Just a simple total yards, rushing yards, passing yards, time of possession should be the standard that is on the board 90% of the time. Scroll the rest of it during timeouts or something.

One thing I noticed during my rewatch of the game is that the big scoreboards showed a super-distracting "Get Louder" animation when OSU's kicker attempted field goals, but the scoreboards lacked animation and were non-distracting during James Turner's attempts. Verrrrrry interesting!

When listening to the Klatt podcast I thought it was interesting how he described the crowd cheering for Zak Zinter.  If you were there it was quite inspiring.  Didn't need a scoreboard.  Didn't need a DJ.  Didn't need Anthony Bellino to tell us what to say.

I want our scoreboard to be utilized more like Marylands, with as many Kevin James memes, Wolverines with laser eyes on field goals, and memes in general as possible. Heck, maybe we can find a kid in a green shirt with an afro to do finger-gun dancing too

After watching red had guy hold up the media time out countdown clock all season, this was the first game I noticed it repeated at the top of the scoreboard.  At least it's another place I can watch while I'm sitting down waiting.

I was really hoping that they would make a Harbaugh hype video with Harbaugh pumping up the players and crowd. But maybe that wasn't allowed. It would have been cool.

One of my favorite things is when they use the closed captioning of the songs and you get to see the lyrics. Maybe sometimes we don't really need to see the lyrics.

I hated the sides of the new scoreboard this season but Saturday I completely ignored that part. One thing I have noticed this season when watching the SEC games is there doesn’t seem to be much if any piped in music. It seems to be mostly just the band(s) playing.

To the window to the wall, till the sweat drip down my balls....

Love that song, definitely surprised they played it at the Big House during the game.....or shocked.
