Two things and two things only about this:

1. I love @CoachJim4UM, think he is the best coach in the country, and want him to coach at Michigan for as long as he would like.

2. I am not interested in negotiating through the public or through the press.

At this point I'm convinced that even if Jim got to write the contract himself, he would still hold off on signing it. I think right now his order of preference is:

1. NFL job that is ideal for him

2. Michigan

3. any non-ideal NFL job or any other college job

He won't outright leave Michigan because he'd rather be here than stuck with an obnoxious NFL owner or GM situation, but he won't sign yet because the "perfect" NFL job may still be out there.

If what has been reported is true, I'm not sure why the University would put up with Harbaugh's demands. Like "immunity from termination." Prohibiting the AD from firing him “for cause." And protections from future NCAA violations. Demands they wouldn't accept from any other head coach. And Harbaugh's demand for a lower buyout is essentially a request for the University to help him obtain NFL employment. Ono and the University would look absolutely foolish caving to such demands. All with no assurance Harbaugh would even stick around from year to year. Why would they even believe such a commitment? If Harbaugh views these demands as essential for his continued employment at the University it is time to show him the door.

We actually need a routine 'Searchbits' column from Brian even though UM has a head coach.

Give him the assurance but in turn, make the buyout astronomical -  come back at him: "we want you here and committed, we'll indemnify your ass against the NCAA and the conference, but in turn you'll pay back massive chunks of your salary just to interview with an NFL team going forward"

Michigan may very well set a new record for players drafted and you corny little fuckers keep whining about "this hurts our recruiting" get off the dumb wannabe recruiting sites and quit worrying about fake stars...rate the class when they finish not before they start, how we doing now ?

Why is it so difficult? Is there anyone who wouldn't understand a statement like:

"I'll always love the University of Michigan and I treasure the time spent as a coach and our accomplishments.

It's very rare in life that you get to go out on top, and on your own terms... and with my lifelong dream of winning a Super Bowl still unfulfilled, I will be stepping down to pursue that opportunity with the [name of NFL team] where i hope to coach many former Michigan players in the future. Go Blue!"

I would like Harbaugh to either go to the NFL this year, or stay at Michigan for good. This really has to stop though. Regardless of what people say or feel, this absolutely has an effect on recruiting.

Harbaugh deserves the best deal for himself.  If Michigan can’t give it to him then NFL it is.  Won’t be from the lack of trying by the school.

It appears to be at least in part by lack of trying by the school.

Tbey want JH to assume the risk for random NCAA decisions about already known situations, and they want JH to put his future completely in the hands of a man who doesn’t really like him much, and after 1 bad year, cut his pay and threatened his livelihood.

To my view, there is a reasonable level of trying that UM is not doing.

Look, I love Jim Harbaugh and want him to be the coach next year and for the next decade, I want this to be his last coaching job, he has earned it and Michigan has been better and would be better having him lead the program.

But also at some point you have to be honest. I know this isn't a popular opinion, but I don't think this is on Warde, the regents, or anyone else, this is on Harbaugh still having that itch to coach in the NFL.

And I don't blame him for this, and if that's what he wants to do, I will be the first one to wish him success. But at some point Jim Harbaugh shares the blame in this contract negotiation too. We've heard over and over again that Jim just wants to feel the love from Michigan, that's all he needs, but that has to go both ways. Three years now we have heard the same thing. "I am going to flirt with the NFL, I didn't find the right situation, but I am coming back to Michigan and this is only going to be a one time thing."

But every year we go through it again, so as much as I love Jim Harbaugh, I don't believe him. So at what point do we just part ways? His inability to really give up on that itch has left Michigan somewhat incapable of capitalizing on what he's built here. Three straight Big Ten Titles, three straight wins over Ohio State, three straight playoff appearances, and a National Championship, accomplishments for which he deserves a lions share of the credit. Yet every spring it's hard to keep players, jump in the portal, keep classes together, etc., because we don't know if Jim Harbaugh is going to the NFL or not. Michigan has been incapable of fully capitalizing on what he built because he is incapable of truly being committed to Michigan, which is completely fair on his part.

And that's fine, but let's just be honest about it for once. The narrative is that all Jim Harbaugh wants it for Michigan to show him love and loyalty, but when does that feeling get returned? If it can't, let's just put a plan in place to move on so everyone can be happy and fondly remember what he has done here, because everyone has earned that right.

I love Harbaugh and thank him for everything. I also can't wait for him to leave and hopefully win a Superbowl somewhere. If I hear JUB say some shit a about Harbaugh wanting to feel the love or  bear hug I'm gonna murder the small family of rabbits that live in my front yard. They should simultaneously build a statue for Jim in front of the stadium that says "greatest coach ever we love you" and also tell him to take the fucking contract or get fucking lost and enjoy the NFL.  I don't care how much you love your flakey amazing girlfriend and how hot she is and how much joy she brings you or even if you could just barely make it work and cobble things together to have a good relationship, eventually it's time to settle down with someone you can trust and will be there for you. You'll always have that one summer of bliss.

Exactly. No man - including the head coach - is bigger than the team. I'm grateful for how Harbaugh turned it around from the late Carr/RR/Hoke years, and even from his first few years. At the same time, this annual ordeal has gotten ridiculous. There's nothing wrong with wanting to go to the NFL (if that's his true desire), it's the holding UM and the program hostage with it that rubs me the wrong way. This nonsense has gotten tiresome and predictable. UM should submit its best offer in the coming days and say take it or leave it because we need to know who our coach is for 2024.

Sherrone Moore is going to be the next head coach at the University of Michigan. I suppose Michigan could try to pry Leipold away from Kansas along with their QB but that seems unlikely for a variety of reasons.

What I want to see is a Herbert stay above all. Minter is going to leave sooner or later. We just have to accept that. But Herbert can be a lifer here.

Elston, Hart, Clinkscale with big fat raises. Bellamy shifted to another position. Jay would go with Harbaugh. So a new Special Teams coach is needed. Newsome is elevated to OL coach.

Elston,Hart, Clinkscale, Newsome are the Fantastic Four that need to be retained at all costs.

OC: Bright mind like a Brennan Marion. Loss of JJ means UM will have to get creative on offense to generate points.

DC: Someone from Ravens coaching tree if Minter leaves.

Would real like to see Erik Campbell back as WRs coach. Soup is only 57.

Dear Jordan Acker (and Dear MGoBoard, and Dear JUB, etc):

Your tweet is a negotiation.  EVERYTHING is a negotiation.  (This post is a negotiation).

But hopefully Jim Harbaugh, Warde, Santa, the BOR, and all their agents and lawyers are communicating directly and forthrightly with each other such that the effect of all this indirect negotiation is minimized.

well i had wondered which side leaked the details to wetzel. i guess i have the answer now.

i don't think it's a great look for harbaugh though. i think the contract details he's requesting are a bridge too far.

i agree with those who say he's just stalling until the nfl interviews are done.

part of me thinks UM should pull the offer and let him keep his current contract.

Wanting immunity from NCAA penalties and sanctions, struck me as a little odd. I understand why someone would want that, but I am not sure I have ever heard it being included in contract? To an outsider it does kind of paint the picture of someone guilty of something. But if he is guilty of something, why even bring that up, and not just straight up leave?

He's right.

Harbaugh could get basically anything he wants from UM and yet he hasn't signed, and so at this point you have to assume it's sort of on him waiting for the NFL to work through his candidacy.  I can see how that would be annoying for UM, and also why at some point you'd also sort of negotiate through the media by saying to Harbaugh that he needs to stop doing it.

These are all sophisticated parties who know what they're doing.

The fact that Harbaugh could be granted “immunity” by the university, and still insist on being able to explore NFL coaching positions with a minimal buyout in place is ridiculous. He can’t expect the university to agree to the immunity demands while essentially accepting him still being a free agent. Jim has to give something here too.

I'm not sure if this was posted but a fellow tweeted:
- He wants a base salary of 12million a year.
- He is wanting full control of the roster especially the offense.
- He wants to pick the next GM.

He stated the Chargers have 48 hours to decide and Jim won't interview with any other team while they make their decision.

This was yesterday about this time so they have 24 hours left.

I'm not sure of the validity of this poster as Harbaugh seems to have interviewed with the Falcons. I guess everyone is an insider.

I love Acker - he was the ONE guy who flamed out the BS from ESPN about an emergency Regents meeting after the Stallions BS. Mentioning how could he be at a meeting when he was helping get his kid a bath.

FFS, just get Harbaugh signed.

All this stuff on immunity from the current BS smear campaign and wanting a 3-man panel instead of Warde should not be a big deal to get the excellent Harbaugh.

Don't blow it, Michigan admin.

Quit f-ing around and being timid and weak over a bunch of lame BS.  Should have gotten this done half a year ago or more.

He also mentioned that coaching contracts do not require board approval, which seems to indicate that they have no role in the part of the process that a lot of people seem to believe they do.

I am grateful beyond all measure that JH took us to the pinnacle. I am at peace with JH's probable departure, especially since the transition to Sherrone is set up to be as smooth as such a thing could possibly be.

Sounds about right. Jim wants everything both ways. No accountability,  and kind of all over the place. He's innocent but he wants immunity. He wants to feel the love from us, but he wants us to also look the other way while he actively goes after any and every NFL opportunity that he can.

He didn't know what eas going on with his own staff (yet again), but his QB says it was a response to OSU. Wonder where he heard that from. Just go Jim. You deserve a shot at the SB. But you're kind of full of shit. Have been since you lied and said this wouldn't be an annual occurrence.

But people will continue to blame Manuel for this bs. I wonder why. Harbaugh is wrong.
