What Jim is asking for is…

What Jim is asking for is worse than Sparty did with Truck.  At least they had “with cause” clause.

One week!  That’s how long…

One week!  That’s how long our unity and joy lasted.  Now we are back to bickering and blaming.  Only Jim knows what Jim wants.  The fans love him.  Five years ago  the fans wanted him fired.  His lack of commitment hurts recruiting.  No it doesn’t say many.  It is useless to speculate only Jim knows the answer… does he stay or leave.

My info may not be relevant…

My info may not be relevant since my Holland experience was a long time ago.  My dad was a professor at Hope College so I was born and raised in Holland.  Great place to grow up.  Lots of things for a kid to do.  Swimming, sailing, exploring the dunes, and for a kid all that snow in the winter was endless fun.  When I was in highschool G.R. was close and had “big” city temptations.  Don’t know what the area is like today, but check it out.

I was 13 in 1947 when I fell…

I was 13 in 1947 when I fell in love with the “Mad Magicians.”  Lots of ups and downs since then.  Team 144 has captured my heart much the same way as the ‘47 team.  January 1, 1948 Rose Bowl Michigan 49 USC 0.  January 8, 2024 Michigan 34 Washington 13.  GO BLUE!

The weather in Houston is bad today.  Heavy rain, high winds this evening, and possible tornadoes.

I’m an 89 year old guy…

I’m an 89 year old guy living near Portland Oregon in a retirement community, and must confess I am one of the vast network of spies.  There is a 94 year old woman living down the hall who by mental telepathy gets the osu signals in real time which I then send on to Jim’s headset.  And yes I’m an old Marine.  Marines, are mostly, part of the vast network, except for the 10% who never get the word…they are osu fans.

As an Oregonian of forty…

As an Oregonian of forty years with grandkids at both Oregon and Oregon State let me say that both schools have good coaches.  Jon Smith is a fine person.  I hate to see him move to the cess pool of MSU.  And if they make the play offs beware of Oregon.  Nix is a great QB, and they have many fine players.  Coach Lanning is an aggressive offense minded coach.

I was raised with fraternal…

I was raised with fraternal feelings for all the BIG schools, except MSU, no more.  Michigan is hated by the entire conference.  Time to leave and let the haters learn to live without one of the main financial supports of the edifice.

I respect your oplnlon, but…

I respect your oplnlon, but I disagree.  I’m 89 years old and have been a Michigan fan for over 75 years.  I’m also a Michigan alumni.  In all that time I have never seen the University treated so shabbily.  MSU has always treated us as not a friendly rival but as a hate object.  OSU used to be an intense but fair rival.  They are now an underhanded back stabbing institution.  The BiG it now seems clear is determined to destroy Jim H, and has no regard for the University.  The rest of the Big has turned its back on Michigan.  We have no supporters or friends in any of the schools.  They all are happy to find any reason slander and abuse Michigan.  Time to leave and find a new home.

I was a 13 year old fan for the ‘47 destruction of MSC, thank heavens I lived to watch the ‘23 stomping of MSU…and yes JJ is the best Michigan QB in my lifetime.

1952-57were the last Lions to be great.  I was just out of high school and in college.  I remember it vividly.  Bobby Lane, Doak Walker, Leon Ford, Les Bingamen, Tobin Rote and a marvelous supporting cast.  Epic battles with Otto Graham’s Browns.  The following 65 years have been hard to live through.

1) Money is important, activity is essential. Work is overrated.

Those were the Lions of my…

Those were the Lions of my youth.  A thrill just read those names.  Fondly remember going to Thanksgiving games with my Dad and brother, both now deceased.  Playing Paul Brown’s Cleveland team led by QB Otto Ghram in championship games.  Perhaps if I live a couple more years I may get to celebrate another Lion’s championship.  Beer a long time.

So Georgia is offering $500K…

So Georgia is offering $500K per year plus 1.4 million signing bonus.  Is anyone else astounded.  To gift an unproven 17-18 year old child speaks volumes to the values of our universities and society.  I know I’m out of step and dear old alma mater needs to keep up but this is ridiculous.  Football is becoming far more important than the academic goals for which the colleges/universities were founded.  Why should I gift my pittance to any institution that is willing to give millions to boys who, while talented, are merely playing a game.

Lets stop speculating about…

Lets stop speculating about the Natty and start thinking about Purdue.  We have a game this Saturday which deserves our attention.  Go Blue!

Oregon was a “dream” job.  Then he used  the Oregon plane to interview with FSU.  Only he called it a recruiting trip to Florida.  Ethics are a problem.  He left a real sour taste in the mouth of Oregonians.

This win matched my joy when the Mad Magicians beat USC 49-0 Rose Bowl 1/1/1948, and when Bo’s boys beat OSU IN 1969.  What a great day!

First went to San Francisco…

First went to San Francisco in the ‘50s.  City was clean and safe and they loved armed service people.  Went back recently and found the city filthy dirty, homeless everywhere, rampant drug use encouraged by free drugs for all from the city government, and a lot of scared people and small businesses under enormous stress trying to protect their store fronts and inventory from out of control vandalism.  The state has gone from one of the best to one of the worst in 50 years.

Strictly defining there is…

Strictly defining there is no such thing as social science.  Science deals in evidence which is proven.  Until proven things are called theories.  Social “Science” deals in theories, assumptions, and often excellent research which cannot be proven as fact.

I’m 88 so definitely…

I’m 88 so definitely speaking from the top of the hill.  Absolutely get annual, or better yet semi annual check ups with your doctors, and be a participant in those sessions.  As best you can follow their advice.  Don’t hesitate to see your doctors if something looks or feels off normal.  However get your advice from professionals don’t read or listen to TV or internet pitches they will try to convince you you have every aliment they are pitching.  Remember the goal is take care of yourself and your loved ones and living your life.  As you age you will be required to come to terms with many physical and possible mental issues.  Adjust as you slowly decline.  Some compensations.  For example when I was in my 20’s and 30’s I loved red meat and beer.  Now I prefer vegetables and one glass of wine.  Red meat tastes fine but doesn’t digest well, and beer results in a gout attack which is painful as hell. So I’m doing things which are not only good for my body but also are by choice.  Have an ache or growth monitor for a few days.  Conditions don’t take care of themselves go see your doctors.

Buckeye coaches don’t follow…

Buckeye coaches don’t follow the rules.  What rules?  There aren’t any that I’m aware of.  The non revenue sports are more fun to watch when you can, given TV’s disinterest.  The athletes are playing because they love their sport.  They aren’t panting at the Portals gates to transfer schools.  Nor are they expecting a huge professional contract.  I admit that after 75 years of fandom I’ve lost a lot of my rah, rah because money from TV now controls all aspects of college football and basketball.

I no nothing about the kid. …

I no nothing about the kid.   I do live in Oregon and have grandchildren who graduated from U of O.  It’s a laid back place.  Lots of parties and mostly very attractive coeds.  50 miles to the ocean and 75 miles to Mt. Bachelor for great winter sports.  All that and a relaxed attitude about academics. Oh, did I be mention Uncle Phil making sure you have lots of Nike products.  Who needs tradition and long ago glory days when you can party, hang out with pretty girls don’t get stressed about school, make a ton of money, and hob job with Uncle Phil while getting ready for the pros and a career with Nike later.

I live in Oregon and have…

I live in Oregon and have grandchildren who graduated from Oregon.  I have no qualms about the Ducks joining the Big, but Oregon’s academics compare to Nebraska.  Phil Knight has spent millions trying to improve Oregon both academic and athletic.  He has succeeded on the playing field.  Still a vast distance to go in the classroom.

Money, money, money.  All it…

Money, money, money.  All it means to me is endless adds.  I seldom watch any team other than Michigan because of the four hour+ time required to watch.  There are books to read, walks with my wife, time for my grandchildren and a life to be lived. It’s over in a blink and watching adds is not rewarding way to spend your life,

I hope the players all get millions.  But forgive me if I stop caring.  I don’t have any emotional investment in Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Samsung, the car companies or any world conglomerate.  College football and basketball have been trending for years to be all about money.  So let them go whole hog.  It is a different day.  It is finally out in the open, just one group of mercenaries competing with another group of mercenaries to see who can fleece the gullible for the most profit.  I have better things to do with my limited funds than support the very talented nouveau rich.

I live in a high cost…

I live in a high cost retirement community which has serious staffing problems.  Residents have taken on many former staff functions regarding food service.  We have 5 restaurants 2 of which are closed due to staffing issues.  Residents are serving in buffet lines and delivering food to shut-ins.  We are not constrained by child care or jobs, but we are older with our individual physical limitations.  Every person has to decide what they are willing and able to contribute to their community.  I’m happy to volunteer as best I’m able to those who need help.

[temporary post for…

Before the pandemic lockdown my family and I were planning on attending the Washington game in Seattle.  We live in Oregon and planned on taking the train from Portland and making a weekend of the experience.  I am the only alum in my family but my two daughters their husbands were going to join my wife and I.  I foolishly called the alumni office to see about buying tickets and was told they didn't handle ticket sales any longer and that I needed to go through stub-hub.  The quoted price was so high that we canceled the trip even before lockdown and the games cancellation.  I got me thinking.  I'm retired, no longer have family ties to Michigan and my grandkids attend Oregon, and Oregon State.  Other than checking the obits of classmates I don't spend much time reading the alumni publications.  I will drop my alumni membership when it expires next year.  It is sad but other than the basketball team I've lost my lifetime devotion to all things Michigan.

Can’t blame the kids or the…

Can’t blame the kids or the coaches.  There is no such thing anymore as an amateur athlete in P5 major sports.  It’s all about money for the team, the team, the team.  Only question is how to divide the swag between the team members, players, coaches, schools, conferences, and the NCAA.  Except for the many alums and other fans there is no loyalty left in the system.  The “teams” members lack of caring, except for a share of the loot, is neither good or bad it just is.  So guess what.  I no longer care about the players, coaches, the major sports at colleges, conferences, and I never cared about the NCAA.

I have hopes, but they are…

I have hopes, but they are tempered by recent history.  I expect them to play with desire and look like they are prepared.  I’ve been following Michigan football since 1945 but became so disheartened by the debacle in Madison in 2019 that I’ve not watched a complete game since.

So I’m 87.  Do you want me…

So I’m 87.  Do you want me to die today or should I wait until tomorrow so I can say goodbye to my kids and grandchildren.  In my opinion social media is a very destructive force.  Anyone can charge anyone with anything with the safety of anonymity.

Having said that let me add Bo and I are of the same generation and we all knew that sexual assault or sexual invasive behavior was totally wrong.  However victims were often ignored and reporting was much more difficult giving perpetrators a veil of silence.  I’m glad conditions have changed.  Yost like Jefferson lived in eras when social values were different and their conduct should be judged by the norms of their times.  From the dawn of human history until the 19th century human slavery was the norm in most societies including Africans in Africa.  And slaves were routinely sexually abused.  Doesn’t make it right but it does make it history which we must accept just as must accept that not every one loves us.

Take down the statue and…

Take down the statue and change the name...it’s the least the U of M can do.  Lives lost, and lives harmed or destroyed a soul shaking tragedy.
But please forgo the sanctimonious attitudes I’m reading.  At 87 years I can assure you that there are many things and people that I need forgiveness for and from.  The deeds cannot be changed and most off those I hurt are dead.  Like all tragedies everyone is harmed even the innocent bystanders.  Seek forgiveness because as you look back over your life you will need it.
