Meta: What brought you here?

Submitted by Laser Wolf on January 8th, 2024 at 8:39 AM

Feeling a bit reflective this morning given the long road getting back to this point. Was thinking what a special place this is and wondering how others happened upon it.

I know I started reading during the 2006 season and it's probably why the Eleven Swans post is the one that is permanently seared in my brain as the quintessential MGoBlog post. Don't think I started really posting until a few years after that but I am thankful for this weird little community.

So what brought you around these parts?

I had just dove head first into Michigan football fandom, and this was the place I found myself coming back to more than any other. Before long, it was the only place I went to for Michigan news.

The writing, the analysis, the community of the board. There is no place like it.

I started reading in 2007. Someone in one of my classes told me about something he read on mgoblog and told me to check it out. First thing I remember reading were hello posts on two OL tecruits. I think Dann ONeil and Rocko Khoury?

I discovered The Wolverine/Ace first and this site second. Near the end of the Lloyd era, I couldn’t understand what the hell the offense was doing on the field.

It was the Carr era. Back when the "message board" was just a running Haloscan thread, complete with username jacking for maximum fun.

A buddy of mine told me "there's a blog that analyzes every play of every game" and I've been a lurker ever since - It had to have been sometime during the 2005 season.

I googled “Mike Hart clips” to see who this new RB recruit was and this was the only site with free high school tape of Hart. I’m guessing this must’ve been 2004.

Closer to 2000 when I got a better mainframe and would Napster a catalog of content to replay I would play some of that classical music before making Sunday breakfast for the wife and kids and browse and interact with the Mlive UM Football fanbase. Due to sucking and classlessness by our two closest rivals (no not ND) the site became a troll fest and since the folks running it were primarily Sparties I left cold turkey.

Jaded, I timidly found this site and viewed from afar until joining 10-11 years ago. Still I held my fire given troll non-policing. Can't win the internet.

The evolved rules have curated a somewhat stable group with much vigor that both calms me in "times of trouble" (BPONE) and ignites joy in the depth of content and contributions to its fanbase when warranted (Muppets).

Again thanks to the staff here and most all its contributors. Let All Naysayers Know!

My son’s freshman year at M was RR’s first year,( i know, sucks for him) and he would show me quotes and pictures from this “blog” site. I started checking in here a couple times a week. As of the Hoke years probably only missed a few days each month. Go Blue!

I don't remember exactly how I first came to the site.   But the "Ur post" to me is Brian's "Notes from a rooftop" piece following the final against Louisville.

https://mgoblog.com/content/notes-rooftop-5am

Key excerpt, emphasis mine:

"This team was awesome and the worst thing about all of this is now it's over, and that was going to happen anyway. We just talked, on the roof, about my world-spanning naiveté when I was a freshman in '97 and thought I should wait for a senior-year Rose Bowl. I 'm old enough now to have few illusions about how common a  thing like this is. Boeheim's been to four Final Fours in 37 years. Massive all-encompassing basketball power Louisville last won in 1986. A thing like this does not come along often, and six points short pales in comparison to four people cementing themselves to each other on a cool Atlanta morning."

TL;DR.    It's all about the ride and the relationships -- a philosophy Blake, JJ, Mike and more very much seem to have embraced.

I honestly don't remember, but it's been a journey. I was here during the RichRod era when the program was at its absolute worst and the tone of the blog was still hopeful, I think (culminating in the masterpiece that was "Sometimes When You're On"). And I stayed with it during the initial success of the Hoke era into the Harbaugh years when BPONE became the rallying cry of this blog and the larger Michigan fandom.

I'm happy for all of the folks who contributed to this site over the years. Back in 2015 after Ohio State won the title, I tweeted something at Brian that was along the lines of "I'm just going to keep repeating Harbaugh over and over to soothe the pain". It took a little longer than expected, but this is what everyone wanted when he was hired. Win or lose tonight, Michigan football is playing for a national championship.

Joined at the beginning of the 2009 season. Mostly did a lot of game day wallpapers for computers. Had read a few things here beforehand, but really enjoyed getting some creative stuff out of the way. Since then, both of my daughters have been born, I've changed careers, and MGoBlog has been in the background the whole time. I'm not as active as I was a while ago, but I still really enjoy the long-form content and I commonly lurk/occasionally comment in the game day threads (still a wild place). Hoping to have a National Championship tonight to provide content for a new set of wallpapers.

A family member of mine is a member here and that's how I heard about the site. Started following for good level-headed analysis with an admirably biased slant and a heavy dose of sarcasm. Eventually got bold enough to start posting.

A few friends mentioned it to me.  Casually read it at first...was just a lurker...and was inevitably sucked in to the vortex.

Here in Dallas, getting ready to drive to Houston.

Had a major celebrity sighting on my flight down...a certain owner of MGoBlog!  Jalen and Jimmy were on a flight to Houston that left a bit before our flight.

I don't remember the details all that well (it's been a while), but it was right at the beginning of 2008 when RR was announced as next head coach. I had primarily been reading/getting info from a different UM site that had links to other UM sites, which directed me here. Eventually I switched to Mgoblog as my primary after a few months.

I didn't realize there was a message board for a bit, but then was a lurker for a few months before eventually making an account in October during that first disastrous RR year. Not a big or well-known contributor, but I've been hanging around ever since.

I just realized I have been on this blog for almost 13 years.  I never bothered to look before this post.  I joined because I was looking for some sort of optimism during the RichRod years.

I didn't realize at the time it would turn me into a Golem-like creature.

I think I started paying attention around the Fall of 2010 or so. I was a sophomore at Butler University and my fandom had taken a dip during 2008-2009 especially being away from my dad for the first time. I think subconsciouslyI was looking to fill that void a bit. I just remember somehow being aware that there was a blog that covered only Michigan called Mgoblog and wanted to check it out.

As my join date indicates, I lurked for a long time before making an account.

During the Rich Rod years...I really started consuming Michigan football in 06 because my best friend's little brother was on the team, although I'd been a fan my entire life.  I googled "Michigan football blog" and this came up, and I've been on ever since. I started working a regular 9-5 job, in front of a computer all day so since I was in front of the computer anyways....and then the obsession grew.

I stumbled upon it by mistake.  I was so pissed and then concerned about the program when RR was hired, that I started to follow recruiting.  I can't even remember what sight I was on, and somehow clicked a link and found MGoBlog.  Spent a few minutes there and was hooked.  I lurked for a few years before I created an account.

2007. Son was born at Mott’s in Jan of 07. He spent majority of year in ICUs there. Michigan football had been a mostly good escape from reality to that point in my life.  Being on a terrifying ride with him and needing to be “with it” every second of the day, this site be my means of escape. Unfortunately my BPONE is far reaching and deep. I’ll probably turn off phone and go workout until the game is over before I check here for results.

I read Brian's piece after the Vince Young Rose Bowl in early 2005, and have been hooked ever since.  It was a hilarious piece that perfectly summed up the experience of watching that game, particularly the descent into panic after watching Young glide around the field throughout the fourth quartet.  Brian's been putting words to how we all experience this team ever since.

'FlightAware - 2011 - Brady Hoke - coaching change', or some google approximation of that.  I used to listen to Karsch and Anderson streaming at my desk in Dallas and needed some more Michigan content.  When it happened again in 2014 I knew where to go, and I've been lurking ever since.  Signed up so I could upvote you people who have made this place such a comfort and resource.

I was abroad in India for my last semester of college in 2014 and I joined then. I'd been reading without comment for a long time before then, but didn't really dive into the board. I was going through some pretty extreme culture shock at the time and needed a little piece of American culture to get me through. Basketball made a run that year and March was a lot of fun. Fell in love with the in-depth football analysis the following football season and never looked back.

I used to be active on MLIVE before they changed their formatting and added mods, from there I moved to a niche lions forum "mdead". That site had some Michigan fans who frequented MGoBlog, and they linked an article. It took a long time to make an account here, but now its a daily visit.

Haha - This^^

If you think the MGoBoard is cluttered now, MLive was seriously fucking thunderdome back in the day of internet message boards. Sifting through endless threads of complete crap with soulless losers to find a nugget here or there was my life in the early 2000’s. Now I’m hooked on MGoBlog’s fine, family-style dining for decent prices.

It was summer of 2006, and I saw MgoBlog either mentioned or quoted in a some other Michigan football news site I had ended up on searching for news. Brian's writing and the in-depth coverage of Michigan hooked me from that day.

I can't remember for sure how long I was a lurker before I actually registered, but I know I was around when the whole DB "find another team to cheer for" statement came out and everything afterward.  I don't know if it was on this board or somewhere else, but I also remember during the RichRod years reading posts from someone (can't remember the user name exactly) that had a Tom Brady avatar defending RichRod until the end.  Anyone remember that?  Boy how things have changed since then!

Anyway, here's to a championship tonight.  Go Blue!

12 years and 8 months ago, I have no idea what first brought me to this blog, I assume I was searching for information on Michigan Football. Maybe I was trying to figure out if Michigan was going to hire Harbaugh or not.

My freshman year of high school in 2007 was the first time I felt I could understand and process college football, and got super excited for Rich Rod after seeing those White/Slaton/Devine offenses at WVU. Started a lurker account in 2008 mostly to follow Rich Rod, recruiting, and game recaps. Deleted that account sometime in the Hoke era but kept reading, and came back for good with a new account during grad school and in the depths of BPONE.

I was starved for Michigan content. I believe I was on a CBS Sports message board when I saw someone reference MGoBlog.

I don't know who you are kind stranger, but that random ass internet post changed my fandom going forward.

I don't recall one specific thing, but it's been since the dark days. I have vivid memories of the Rilo Kiley hype video and even bought a Power of the Forcier tee shirt. I don't post much anymore, but on a day like this it's great to get reflective about the journey.

Brian, Seth, and Alex are incredible in talent and dedication, and many shouts out to the Aces, Heikos, and many more I'm forgetting over the years. Thanks for making this ride all the more enjoyable and deepening my understanding of what's happening on the field.

I was on a board called sackcarr.com or something like that. I really only went on bodybuilding message boards and when that one basically dissolved after carr retired I was googling message boards and found this place.

Here we are like 13 years later lol.
