Meta: What brought you here?

Submitted by Laser Wolf on January 8th, 2024 at 8:39 AM

Feeling a bit reflective this morning given the long road getting back to this point. Was thinking what a special place this is and wondering how others happened upon it.

I know I started reading during the 2006 season and it's probably why the Eleven Swans post is the one that is permanently seared in my brain as the quintessential MGoBlog post. Don't think I started really posting until a few years after that but I am thankful for this weird little community.

So what brought you around these parts?

Coaching search after Carr and the Pryor recruitment.  I was just a lurker for years until someone asked about moving to Knoxville, which is where I live.  That is when I started my account.

It is a great blog and resource.  I have learned more about football from this site then any "main" football program.  Lot's of really smart football people on here.  Also good for a laugh most of the time. I do stay off the game threads for the most part.  Too stressful.

Go Blue!  Been to long, Finish it boys!

I lurked from 2010 until 2014. After leaving staff at the U and moving to South Dakota (happy wife...), I finally joined. Been one hell of a fun ride.

I love being part of this weird little community.   No idea what got me started.

Grew up in a family with lots of Michigan degrees, but I'm not one of them.  M sweaters on in my baby pics.  Grew up loving the Big House.  Off to Chicago after WMU, which was a fun place to be a Michigan fan.   I've been back in the state of MI for about 15 years, and it takes a collection of nutjobs like all of you to match the fever pitch I have for Wolverines football and sometimes basketball when its not 2023-24.

I lurked for a year or so on the site early in Rich Rod's tenure before first posting during the Brady Hoke hire, I believe.  I was blown away that there was a community as obsessed I was about Michigan football, not just the program itself but the finer details of X's and O's.  It was also during a rough time in my life as I was struggling with depression from a recent divorce.  Mgoblog really was good mental medicine for me at the time.

I started coming here in 2005. Prior to that, I got all of my UM sports news and info on the Rivals message boards.

About the time I found this site, I was really getting sick of all the BS comments/conversations on Rivals. I miss some of the good posters from back then, but the noise and garbage was getting to be too much.

Once I started coming here, it didn't take me long to realize I had found my community on MGoBlog. I don't post often, but I love this place. A really great group.

Yeah, I've been a lurker here longer than a member but I think I stumbled upon the site (the old Haloscan(?) days) during Carr's last season and have been trapped here since.  Eleven Swans was great, the Wolverine Liberation Army bit, multiple basketball championship game runs including the first one where my diaries basically became the weekend recaps, Steel, everything.  Just such a ride.

Don't remember how I stumbled upon the site.

Stay for the (mostly fantastic) writing, accurate / semi-insider reporting, and (mostly great) community. In short, the exhilaration, smarts & humor. Oh, and tarot :-).

I started lurking around the Harbaugh hire time, was desperate for content to pass the time while at my first job out of college that was a 2nd shift IT helpdesk position, only job was to answer the phone and online chat rest of the time was whatever we wanted as long as it wasn't adult content. Movies got old and Youtube wasn't what it is today so, found this site and it has been a daily time passer during my lunch times as I've climbed the corporate ladder. Gets a little harder to visit during the day as I've moved up but I still find some time. I can actually remember watching the Utah game during a shift in 2015.  We've come so far.

Haloscan told me to come here.

It was the mid aughts and the World Wide Web was blowing up; being a little Michigan football obsessed, I started looking around at whatever recruiting and “insider” info I could find. I don’t know exactly when I found the OG mgoblog but it must have been a wee babe at the time. I became a “member” about as soon as it was possible to do so.

It’s been a daily habit ever since. I’ve taken a few breaks here and there, but in something like 16 years I don’t think I’ve ever gone more than a month or two without at least checking in.

Really dating myself here but I really started getting into all things recruiting early 2000’s and I was scouring my poor dial-up internet, looking for info related to a Muskegon HS recruit named Ronald Johnson (RoJo for the long time committed creepers). He eventually flamed out at USC but it brought me here.

I found that MGoBlog provided pretty good player scouting reports and was “edge of your seat” exciting in regard to their commitments. That was probably 20 years ago and I didn’t even make an account until 10 years ago as I was just here for the commentary for the longest time.

In the aftermath of losing to Appy State I was disgusted with how the Lloyd Carr regime had fallen. Follow that up with the beatdown loss to Oregon and I was all in for firing Lloyd that next day. Thankfully he righted the ship and brought us out of disaster only to give us one of the greatest games of Michigan football in my lifetime against Florida. Oh what could have been Lloyd, what could have been.

I first came to MGOBlog because another forum I was on, where I could air my grievances, said this place had some great game analysis. So initially I came here for the front page content. The other forum I was on ended up closing shop so I moved here fully somewhere around 2008-2009 right in the midst of the horrendous RR years (In full disclosure I was a supporter of RR at the time, but in hindsight and with the disastrous ending of his regime I changed my analysis soon after Hoke came in).

So to sum it all up, I went on a search to the dark depths of Google for a place to air my grievances which led me to some great content and eventually to become a full fledged posting member and contributor to the greater Wolverine society.

I started reading in 2009, keeping in touch with the team after I moved to Minnesota from CA. I was kinda sorta familiar with Brian from the USCHO forum.

I finally pulled the trigger on a posting account when I determined that I had something to say, which was my story of the 2002 hockey regional at Yost.

Obviously, it turns out that I had a lot more to say than that.

I had my own blog in like 2001-2008 that I made for fun. I actually wrote the platform in Coldfusion myself.   A buddy who read my blog mentioned that there was a great Michigan Football blog that was written from the perspective of a Russian communist. I found it and read it a few times, but didn't get into it on the regular.  A few years later when Lloyd Carr retired I couldn't find the communist Michigan football blog to see who was going to be our coach, but my friend mentioned MGoBlog.  It was fantastic.  The main content was great and the comments were just as good.  It didn't even occur to me to get an account for several years.   I swear I signed up before 2011, but that's my start date.  I did originally have my own name as my username because what harm could come of that?  I took advantage of the one-time username switch that was offered.

I actually saw Brian one-time as he passed by my friend's parent's tailgate in the Victors parking lot.  He work a long black duster and looked like he was ready for Columbine.  My buddy pointed him out as I never would have recognized him.

So happy that I've stuck by Michigan through the Horror, RR, Hoke and COVID.  My wife's first game was the Horror.

The RichRod hire and trying to get a better understanding about the read option offense and the 3-3-5 defense. It was really the first time I got into the schematics of football and the way this site breaks down the game has only further enhanced that. I think we’re all pretty lucky to have this kind of coverage on the How/why and not just the what.

My long time friend who I shared football season tickets with told me about the blog. We were discussing something and he referenced MGoBlog as his source.

Would regularly check in and got hooked after a couple years. Made an account and here we are 👍.

I first discovered Mgoblog when I was searching for information about the coaching search after Lloyd Carr announced his retirement. I had wandered into parts of what was the Michigan blogosphere at the time (Maize n Brew before they moved) but I was sucked in by Brian's writing and quickly became a regular reader.

I was an infrequent reader until I found out from this site that Brady Hoke shits gold, then discovered it was pyrite. Then we got on to the hiring Harbaugh saga.

At some point I discovered the UFRs and Brian's writing. The man's football writing was as fine as any I've ever come across.

Like so many others here, I started lurking around the time of Lloyd's retirement. I didn't make my account until whatever day it says in 2010, but I was around a few years before signing up.

Cool topic.

I remember lurking and reading the blog from a job that I left in April 2005, so it has been a long, long time. I didn’t make an account or post until over a decade later!

First, full marks for correct use of my favorite word: quintessential

Hearing Brian on with Sam every week.  Hey, this guy really knows his stuff!

I was assigned to MC the UM club of Detroit kickoff event that year, the Monday before the opening game. Brian was one of the featured speakers.

They had been looking for UM-Ohio game stories and told him I had some.

He asked how many points I had - I did not even know what points were.

So he gave me 100 to be able to post.

Always grateful for that generosity and the MGo community.

Have been blessed to attend some events with Seth.

Just the sharpest people who are also excellent writers.

Woverine Nation has never been more connected and this is a big part of that.

Brian's writing hooked me from day 1. He is so talented.

From there, I was hooked.  This is THE best sport blog in the country , no question about it, and I am grateful for it.

I knew Brian's brother through another message board. He posted one day that his brother had just started a Michigan fan site that we should check out. That was the week the site went up, must have been late 2004 or something, been floating around ever since.

The funny part is that the two sites shared a server system for a bit, so any time something happened with Michigan, MGoBlog would make the other crash.

My join date (2021) is way after my lurk date (2007 ish).  Somewhere around the hiring of RichRod is when a friend told me about this place.  Everything else is lost to the mists of time.

Little brother kept giving me insider info on UM sports & I was like "where'd you hear that?" and he said "mgoblog". Could check my history, but not too long ago I'm assuming. Have been a UM sports fan since the late 80s. Cousin played football for MSU back in the Highsmith era, but I just had to be a Michigan fan - maize & blue being AK colors.

I was looking for the quick dopamine rush associated with having anonymous persons agree with my bullshit, as represented through a fictitious digital currency.

In short, I came for the MGoPoints.

In my early 20s after graduating from M in 2001 I stopped paying much attention to Michigan sports. I'd watch a few football games a year with my parents but that was it. I also never got cable so I never watched tv at all. But around the time Rich Rod was getting hired streaming was also picking up and I could watch football and basketball games online so I started paying more attention which led to reading Adam Rittenberg on ESPN. It wasn't too long until I realized that all the good articles he linked and referenced were on mgoblog and soon I was checking mgoblog every day too... and then instead.

I stumbled onto this site in late 2014, when I was looking for information regarding the potential Harbaugh hire. Harbaugh was interesting to me because he was a contemporary of mine, and maybe my teenage son would go to Michigan? (He did). The writing was awesome, and there were cool things like flight trackers to get excited about.  Also, I guess to some degree it’s in my blood, as my father was a sports editor for the Daily in the 50s.

Over the years of reading, I have learned a lot about football, and football fandom, and perhaps most importantly I learned that I really have no business caring about the decisions of someone else's 17 year old.

This site has helped me gain perspective about being invested in something as a fan, and how to take disappointment with grace.  This is a theme I think with this site, and our fandom in general, and why works of art like “Eleven Swans” and “Mr. Brightside” really resonate.

On the day of what might be Jim’s last snap as head coach (and man I hope it isn’t) I am reminded of a Detroit News article, “'Right guy, right time': Ex-players moved by Harbaugh hire.”  Doing things the right way, recruiting good students, tough guys.  It has been a rebirth of the program, but as always with us, a tinge of disappointment to reckon with.

I looked to Brian’s Preview in the hopes that I might find a shred of consolation, and I think I really did:

Loss will cause me to... well… I mean. I'll be disappointed but can't ask for a whole lot more.

Win will cause me to... float.

It's been so great for Michigan football lately it's hard to believe the lows that got me here. I started on Firelloydcarr.com in 07 after Oregon slammed a sledge hammer in Michigan's end zone. I think that was Brian's first page that then morphed into this beautiful chaos. That part I could have wrong, but I do remember sitting watching with shock as Michigan started 0-2 after being ranked #5 to start the season, and thinking it can't get worse than this. HA! The journey that followed has lead us all here, and I'm so incredibly excited to watch the game tonight with my sons and hopefully see a National Title come to Ann Arbor. Go Blue!

IIRC I started listening to the podcast sometime while in the admissions process for my master's program at U-M around 2008-09. I didn't care terribly much about the Big Ten (always found U-M at least tolerable in their arrogance) but it was such a well done podcast that it drew me into caring about Michigan. And this was early to mid Rich Rod, some of the worst seasons in a long time.

I got banned from the Scout Michigan forum toward the end of the 2010 season saying that even though Rich Rod might well be a good coach, it can't ever work out at Michigan with all the stuff that happened and he needs to be fired asap.

I joined here a few months later, but probably didn't post a ton because at the same time I got onto the 247 forum and posted there. But they turned their forum $$$, so yeah I started posting more here.
