Yeesh Kirk - chill out.  The world's not going to end if folks disagree with your (Kirk's) take on the Alabama/FSU debate.  You (Kirk) aren't judge, jury and executioner on everything CFB related.

I kind of feel for him...I've always thought he tries to be knowledgeable and fair, and generally is. He's a talking head and gave an opinion that he probably earnestly believes. It's not really on him that the network he works for has been instrumental in changing the CFB landscape. I think FSU deserved to be in, I think the "4 best teams" is a fig leaf. But also, I don't think he deserves the invective he gets for giving an opinion. He's been nothing but professional and smart for the last 25 years. I feel for him.

He does kinda have a point about 2000 when FSU got in over Miami, who beat FSU.  And I will add 1993 when 1-loss FSU got into the default national championship game vs undefeated Nebraska.  West Virginia was the only other undefeated team sitting out there and basically told to kick rocks.  (Auburn was too but bowl banned at the time.)  Even Notre Dame was sitting out there with 1 loss but beat FSU head to head.  

But FSU got in anyway because voters thought they were best.  I of course still think FSU got colossally screwed this year but 12 year old me who remembers that injustice thinks it's a little funny to see the karma happening.  E.g. Danny Kanell sobbing about the decision but showing off his 1993 NC ring

• If you're secure in your opinion, why the yelling caps ("BETTER") augmented / exacerbated by double exclamation marks ("!!")?

The problem is, and no one ever says this, is that NO ONE KNOWS WHO'S THE BETTER TEAM. Opinions are what they are. You don't KNOW you're right. I don't KNOW you're wrong. 

Given the above, the bullshit that you're aiming for, "who's the best team" is nothing more than that: bullshit. opinion. speculation. heresay. a guess.

You KNOW what we DO KNOW?

  • That FSU is 13-0 in a P5 conf.
  • That includes X wins over ranked teams (current or former).
  • It includes a Conf Champ Game win.
  • AND it includes a neurtral site win vs another P5 ranked team (LSU). 

All this is to say that the ONLY thing we actually know is the RESULTS OF THE FUCKING GAMES.

Exactly this. Just go back to Oregon all but being handed that game by the pundits two weeks ago as a 9.5 point favorite over Washington.  

Bama needed a punt muff and a 4th and 31 miracle to beat a team that got pounded at home the week before by New Mexico St.  

FSU has Sunday players all up and down it's roster and one the best set of WR's in the country.  You don't know Bama is better unless they play.  

For the 800th time - fuck the committee.  They got it absolutely wrong.

He's a dumbass and leaving out FSU was a mistake.

If FSU beats Georgia and Alabama or Texas wins playoffs, FSU has a legitimate claim to National championship. If Alabama or Texas were left out in my opinion there is no scenario where they have a solid claim.

There are a few Major Selectors who can award national titles in the FBS that are recognized by the NCAA.

AP
Coaches
Andersen & Hester
Congrove Computer Rankings
Colley Matrix (Which is the National Title that UCF won)
Massey College Football Rankings
Sagarin Ratings

Where things could get very interesting is that the AP voters and Coaches (the only two voted on by people) are not obligated to vote for the CFP winner.  Florida State could have the AP and coaches both decide to rank FSU ahead of the CFP winner if FSU is the only undefeated team.  ESPN is not going to talk about this being an option for obvious reasons.

However, that's all a great big what if, we are winning it all this year!!!!
