[Kind of OT] being villified as a fan base

Submitted by Grampy on January 6th, 2024 at 11:00 AM

We, as a fan base of a prominent Big Ten school, have been singled out (in an amusing way) by SBNation's Off Tackle Empire, which allegedly represents the entire conference:

Do our fellow conference members support one of their own when we strive to represent our conference at the pinnacle of the sport?  Uh, not on a bet.  They, instead, trot out all the Michigan Alumni tropes in an effort to diminish us.  They shall pay, all of them.

Rich Eisen had a nice clip on loving being the center of the hate. You hate us bc you ain’t us. Simple as that.

Maybe Washington fans will chant “BIG TEN”.
We sure as hell won’t.

When it comes to the whole question of conference loyalty, I always follow the guidance of those great philosophers, Brian Wilson and Mike Love, who wrote, "Be True to Your School."

Please note that they never said a word about being true to your conference, league, or geographical location.

Words to live by.

This too shall pass. Many different emotions involved for those who root against us. Jealousy and envy are a few. Beating the odds of winning all three of the regular season games without Harbaugh on the sidelines is another. They hate us saying: It's-Great-To-Be-A-Wolverine! or Who's Got It Better Than us-NOOOBODY!!

I don't click on any troll crap. I just go my merry way and am enjoying the ride.

Go Blue!!

The whole thing boils down to "Michigan fans are delusional and paranoid." But no actual arguments are made to counter any of our positions, except an attempt to counter some uses of  whataboutism.

They opened with mocking all the MGoLawyers coming out of the woodwork, acting like everyone is unqualified to discuss actual legal proceedings. I don't know, when Jim Harbaugh's lawyer literally lifts arguments verbatim from MGoBlog, I think it's fair to say that a school with a top 10 law school is able to produce fans who are capable of speaking intelligently about the case.

Yea this looks like something from an SEC site. Weird. Also funny how no one felt any particular way about Michigan fans until this year, and now they all think we're crazy for pushing back on thin sensationalist narratives about us

Speaking of the fanbase wars:

https://rolltidewire.usatoday.com/lists/alabama-football-fans-of-other-teams-talk-about-crimson-tide-rose-bowl-college-football-playoffs/

Alabama is obsessed with other fans being obsessed with Alabama. This is similar to us, as well. And here I am being obsessed with Alabama's obsession with fans' obsessions.

But mostly I'm amused that they are mad at Cam Goode giving a quote post-game about Alabama ON THE FIELD! Cam Goode isn't allowed to do that? LMFAO. Really they're just mad because he said FSU should have been in and they weren't afraid of Bama. JFC even OSU fans understand we're allowed to talk shit after beating them.

He goes to see Male strippers?

And likely is Matt Ruhle. BigRed2?

I guess when you have nothing to play for you write obtuse essays to cope.

Let's say you're an Indiana football fan (if that's even possible). You resent getting stomped by the power schools year after year, and you love to see them take it up the wazoo.

You also know things are going to get even worse for you next season, with the West Coast schools joining the conference. You're going to be clobbered even more.

From 2008-2014 you could console yourself with, "See? Michigan's now like us. They're mortal." But then you saw Michigan come back to the top. It was nauseating; you know Indiana never will.

You're thinking, "Gee, maybe we should leave the Big Ten and join up with the remainder of the Pac 12. We might be competitive." But then you realize, nah, you'll get your butts handed to you pretty much everywhere. Might as well take the money Michigan and Ohio State earn for you on TV.

So you're depressed. You want some schadenfreude. You hope to see beat-downs against those guys, if not by you, by anyone. What better way to get some than to see Michigan in trouble for some imagined wrong, and have a bad season without its head coach for its most important games?

But then Michigan goes out and wins half of its games without even having their head coach on the sidelines. Where's your schadenfreude now? It's disappointing, right?

So you root for Alabama in the Rose Bowl. If you're an Ohio State fan, you even have T-shirts for your whole family proclaiming your support of Alabama. And then 'Bama loses. Are you ever frustrated. You lost twice!

Maybe you remember applying to Michigan and instead of getting the thick welcome packet, you got the thin, "Sorry, see ya around!" letter (shout out to MSU alums!).

Your boss is a Michigan grad and you resent the hell out of that arrogant jerk, right? Maybe in addition to a day job, he or she owns a few Macdonald's franchises, including the one where you flip burgers for a living.

I mean, life is tough enough, and now you have to watch Michigan - those cheating, arrogant, insufferable bastards, the Wolverines - play for the Natty. And OMG, maybe they'll win. You hope not, but it's possible.

So you cut two holes in a paper grocery bag for your eyes, and you put it on your head, and you peep at the game through the holes, and hope against hope that Michigan gets clobbered.

Until you realize that whoever wins on Monday night, the Big Ten will have the reigning National Champion and it will never be you.

Good, I can feel your anger. Let the hate flow through you.

I used to stop by OTE because it seemed like a sibling rivalry type of site where fans of various big ten teams came to jab at each other, but mostly stay pretty civil.

But, the one constant is their pure disdain for Michigan. They have a couple of pro M contributors over there, which honestly surprises me, but yeah, the hatred for M is definitely on another level. And they seem to lovingly call OSU the Death Star, which confirms to me even more that the rest of the B1G loves to have OSU be their daddy.

The writers try to be witty and funny, but it mostly falls flat. Once Signgate ™️ happened, I knew I couldn’t ever return because the toxicity towards us would hit levels that were unimaginable.

tl;dr that site sucks

Cool.  I want to be the most hated team in the country.

I want that internet meme that says "When Alabama loses, America wins" to be changed to  "When Michigan loses, America wins."

They don't make those for Northwestern.

No disrespect to OP, but like most here saying …who gives a flying “you know what” what any of those mouth breathers are saying

They can hold our Rose Bowl trophy while we play for the natty
