Jim Harbaugh, please stay at Michigan

Submitted by b618 on January 11th, 2024 at 8:26 PM

I've heard Coach Harbaugh talk about being appreciated and wanted. I've read articles talking about how much it means to him.

The excellent President Ono is doing a great job of it. At least one Regent, Jordan Acker, seems to be doing a good job of it.

We fans certainly cheer and show our joy. We know we love Coach Harbaugh, the players, the other coaches -- this magnificent TEAM.

But it might be useful for us to say so in direct terms in one topic.

Maybe this could be seen by Coach Harbaugh, whereas posts scattered here and there in other topics would not. Maybe what we say is not of much impact on his decision, but it doesn't hurt for us to try. Maybe there is another thread here on MGoBlog that already did this. I looked around and didn't see one. I won't hurt to have another even so.

Coach Harbaugh,

Please stay. "Who's got it better than us?" "Nobody"

Nobody. Not the Chargers. Not the Falcons. Not the Titans. Not the Raiders. Not the Commanders. Not the Seahawks. Not the Patriots.

U of M,

PLEASE make Jim's contract such that there is no ability to fire him due to NCAA nor Big Ten sanctions, which are oblivious to all logic.  I suggest having language to suspend pay in those cases, but not terminate.  Jim doesn't care about the $, he cares about being able to stay around!

“Jim…..Coach…..you and I were in school together.  Same year.  I’m sure you don’t recall but we had a psych class together. You were barely there, but we all knew who you were. We all knew the greatness to come.  As one who shares with you the experience of 1980’s Michigan. Of Bo Schembechler, and shanties in the Diag, and Shakey Jake wearing a fur coat in May, I implore you — stay where you’re loved. Where your greatness was born.  Where you belong.  We still need you. And everything in life is just a little bit better with you in Ann Arbor…”

Jim Harbaugh's constant innovation and advocacy for change in college football is, within that realm, on par with Martin Luther King's efforts regarding racism.  His advocacy for the players, regarding transfers, sharing in the huge profits, and expanding the playoffs so more could participate, are inspiring; they inspire awe among the players and fans, and inspire hatred from those "haves" who seek to continue their exploitation of the true value-creators, the athletes themselves.

Just tell him, "Those who stay, will be champions!"

Oh crap.  He already is.  There is no better coach for Michigan.  He is the perfect fit.

Stay Jim.  Be a champion again, and again, and again.....

Thank you Coach!  You came back when the program was struggling to be relevant and restored respect.  When times got tough you dug your heals in and made the changes needed to take the program to a 3 year level we could not have realistically imagined.  Now you have delivered a National Championship!  All the while you find the time and energy to advocate for ALL student athletes, drawing a target on your back for the NCAA and Big Ten to take unwarranted shots at you and the program.  You have grown and earned a voice that must be heard!  Thank you for creating so many moments of joy for this old guy to share with his son.  You were a great Michigan player and now you are truly a Michigan legend.  Best wishes to you and your family.  You can do anything you want but please know that you are an agent of change that college sports needs.  I hope you stay but will keep cheering for you no matter what you do.  Thank you!

If I could give Jim a bear hug with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind and it not be weird and creepy, I would. If he stays or leaves, build the man a statue, he deserves it.

I actually just finished writing him when I came back here and saw this post.

Bo said in 1982 that he was persuaded, at least in part, to stay because of the outpouring of letters he received.  I can’t recall what book it was in—it might have been Mitch Albom’s—where he expressed amazement that a letter actually made it to him addressed simply “Bo, Ann Arbor.”

I don’t know if he’s really the kind of guy who would be swayed by personal appeals; maybe he has his mind made up at this point.  But if he is deciding, I wouldn’t want him to do it without hearing some additional appreciation, and to hear the sincere hope that he’ll be on the sidelines for many years to come.

Ray,

I was a FR and MMB member in 1981-82 when the Bo to TAMU rumors were flowing. He got offered anywhere from 2 to 3 MM$ over 10 years, a CFB record at that time, to leave. I remember on a Friday night hearing he was staying home. Given the cheating in the SWC, Bo made the right call.

For JH, the front office (GM, Prez) and Owner could make his life a pain.

But whatever JH does, fully behind him!

I agree seems like creating a lasting legacy as the greatest coach at Michigan is worth it.  I don’t necessarily think being the best coach at the next level is better than being the best coach at college.  Is belicheck regarded higher than Saban? You don’t really think so, but reasonable people may disagree.

another question might be would 3 Nattys at Michigan and another 10 years of dominance, be better than 1 championship at Michigan and 1 Super Bowl.

Jim Harbaugh - I fell in love with Michigan football as a youngster. The team almost immediately stopped beating Ohio State, winning the big ten.

The journey you have taken these fans on is nothing short of remarkable, and it feels great to hold my head up high - National Champions! The way you have evolved as a coach, with grit and determination has inspired me to attack each day with enthusiasm unknown to mankind, 1% better.

You owe us nothing, but we love you forever. These players love you. Michigan loves you. I understand there’s no Lombardi trophy to be had in Ann Arbor, but those who stay will be CHAMPIONS.

Be a champion and STAY!  Let’s RUN IT BACK for like a decade!!!!

He is undeniably a great football coach and has done a great job here.  I was one year behind him at Michigan, he was my quarterback, and I absolutely want him to stay and so appreciate your effort.  Ultimately it will be Jim's preference that will rule the day-success has brought him NFL opportunities, and if he wants to try for a Super Bowl he will have that chance.

When he first took the job, many of us thought he wouldn't stay 9 years.  Maybe 5 at the outside, but we knew he'd leave the program in good shape and good hands.  If he stays, I fully expect the success to continue, though 40-3 over the last few years might not be sustainable.  If he leaves, thanks for the memories, no hard feelings, and Sherrone or someone else will hopefully pick up the baton and turn out to be just as good if not better.

To be clear-YES, I WANT JIM TO STAY!  Just think it depends more on what he wants than what we want.

Coach Harbaugh,

There is not a more perfect person to lead Michigan football right now and to continue advocating for what you feel is right.  While I CERTAINLY will respect your desire to scratch that Super Bowel itch if you leave, I feel there is SO MUCH good you can offer to the young men coming through our program.  There is not a more important legacy you could ask for, then to turn out a generation of Michigan Men.  America would be better for it.

GO  BLUE!!!

Coach Harbaugh,

When you went from Stanford to the 49ers, you did amazing things as the leader of that program.   It was indisputable.  My favorite moment was when just before the Super Bowl run you  had each players’ high school recruitment photo taped to their locker as a way of reminding them about their dreams.  That was freaking brilliant!

When you came to Michigan, I fully expected it would take you 8-10 years to achieve a complete restoration to the top of college football.  You led that effort!

You now have a choice and I support you whatever you decide is best for you.  But I gotta say that my heart wants you to stay in Ann Arbor!

Thank you coach for all you’ve done to make this world a more enjoyable and enthusiastic place!

Coach,

Nearly as remarkable as your on-field triumph is the way you’ve fostered and developed Teams 142-144 into a true family and brotherhood. We are so deeply grateful for the way you identify then develop and educate these talented young men to be the absolute best on and off the field.  Without you, this wonderful and singular program you’ve created will suffer and flounder, as will Michigan.

You are an instant and permanent Michigan icon, a legendary Michigan Man with no peer in recent history given this 3-year tour de force.  Please stay and keep this football family together and happy.

We NEED you. This University needs you. Team 145 and many thereafter need you. We need you to continue savaging Ohio State and Penn State, plus all of the new Big Ten arrivals in 2024.

I mean, we said please, after all.

Who’s got it better than us?

If you can think of an NFL team that does, perhaps Harbaugh should go there.

But you can’t. There isn’t one. There is a difference between a championship at Michigan and a championship with the Ravens. No NFL team will ever have the same history, tradition, or culture. It’s just not possible. The NFL is fundamentally different than college. If you win enough NFL games, you’ll be added to the pro football hall of fame.

I think Harbaugh wants a bigger legacy than a hall of fame. He can have that at Michigan.

I hope JH does not get picked by any of the NFL teams but there are so many openings now, I doubt he will be back at Michigan next season. He accomplished his mission of getting Michigan a National Championship. So, if he leaves to pursue the NFL, I wish him the best. But I would love to have him back as our Michigan coach.

@Jimnationalchamp I used to want nothing more than to be a successful Michigan dentist. Then I changed my goal to happiness wherever I find it. I am about as far from a dentist as I could be. But I'm happy. I hope the Superbowl goal doesn't cloud your judgement. Be flexible toward your own happiness. Saban was happy to lose his final game to you and team 144 as the GOAT. Just think of what you could be 15 years down the road as U of M's head coach.

He belongs at Michigan until he decides to literally hang up his cleats.  Seeing him coaching a bunch of grown ass men playing for a contract in the sterile corporate NFL environment just seems wrong.  Saban is now gone.  It's Harbaugh's time to be the elder statesman and leader of college football.  College football and these young men need Coach Harbaugh.  The NFL does not.

Does anyone know how to send Jim Harbaugh a link to our thread?

I'll try printing stuff out and mailing to him at the Athletic Department, in case that would get through.

There are probably folks here who know better than I do what might get there.
