Herbert gone
January 29th, 2024 at 9:00 AM ^
Is that so? You're basing that on what exactly?
January 29th, 2024 at 12:34 PM ^
Moving from Harbaugh to Sherrone saves at least $7M per year, right? Is the AD just going to pocket that difference, or are they planning to devote the same resources to the program, just with a different allocation?
January 29th, 2024 at 8:21 AM ^
Nope, this falls squarely on Jim Harbaugh....On one hand taking Jesse Minter was a given, gutting the rest of the staff and leaving Sherrone with multiple deep holes to fill is all on Jim.
January 29th, 2024 at 9:02 AM ^
Is Harbaugh going to let us keep the National Championship trophy ?
Just asking.
January 29th, 2024 at 9:07 AM ^
It's the NFL, some people want to reach the highest level of their profession. Not everyone sees themselves working in AA for 30 years as much as we all want to believe they do. UM is a great gig, it's not the pinnacle.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:22 AM ^
I like how people are mad at Warde for not giving Harbaugh as much freedom to run the program as they think he needed to give him but are also mad at him for not meddling more in the assistant staff arrangements.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:29 AM ^
What?
They're mad at Warde because he didn't give Jim the support, ie freedom, to run the program his way.
Now they're mad at Warde for not giving Sherrone the support, ie freedom, to retain the assistants when he was supposedly hired so there'd be continuity.
It's literally the exact same thing.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:46 AM ^
What terms did Sherrone request for his assistants that would have retained Herbert, not unbalance the rest of the staff (EG does he think it is a good idea to pay a S&C coach more than a defensive coordinator? Why or why not?), that Warde declined to offer? Was it reasonable?
People are just assuming Warde is the reason Herbert left, and the only evidence provided is that they’ve already assumed bad things about him in other areas.
For example, a lot of people blamed Warde for poor vetting for Shemy and Stalions, but that seems inconsistent with complaints that Warde didn’t give enough staff freedom to Harbaugh.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:49 AM ^
If, as many people seem to believe, Herbert was truly the core of this program in many ways, then yes, you spend to keep him. If he's not worth more than a DC (of which we get a new one every year or two) then I guess he's not and now he's gone.
January 29th, 2024 at 9:06 AM ^
How did Harbaugh not have the freedom to run his program how he wanted? The things that Warde "meddled in" are: Harbaugh's salary/compensation and response to NCAA allegations. What coach in the country unilaterally decides how to deal with NCAA allegations made against himself? What coach determines his own compensation package without the input of the school? Harbaugh was not a god, and should not be treated as such. He had a great three year run. That's it.
January 29th, 2024 at 1:26 PM ^
So wait - paying people what it takes to retain them over competing offers is "meddling" now?
So what do you actually feel like Warde's job is, exactly?!
January 29th, 2024 at 8:32 AM ^
You cant make people stay. Money is not the answer for everybody.
January 29th, 2024 at 9:39 AM ^
Michigan football is not some sacred institution that binds people to a job for life. Nor is it a Scrooge McDuck pile of gold coins that someone can dive into. People are understandably frustrated, but an open position does represent opportunities. After all, Ben Herbert was promoted at some point in his career.
January 29th, 2024 at 9:38 AM ^
Yes, a failure of Warde...who signed Herbert to a 5-year contract less than a year ago.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:03 AM ^
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo
January 29th, 2024 at 8:03 AM ^
I sure am glad we got our championship this year
January 29th, 2024 at 8:10 AM ^
Might not sniff another one in 3 decades at the rate Warde’s useless ass is moving on NIL and how Harbaugh is capping Moore at the knees. Smfh.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:17 AM ^
Warde won't be here for 3 decades, so it might be sooner...
January 29th, 2024 at 9:44 AM ^
I made sure all my kids were allowed to stay up and watch the Rose Bowl win and the National Championship win. They may be too young to understand or truly enjoy watching the game, but I wanted to experience those with them. I started at UofM in 98, and didn't think it'd be 26 years before I'd see both of those things happen after seeing Michigan win the National Championship the year before. I also realize it was 50 years before Michigan had won a National Championship before that.
Enjoy this win and know it is not something we get to enjoy often.
January 29th, 2024 at 1:29 PM ^
Well, we all are.
But we're not talking about 2023 here...
January 29th, 2024 at 8:04 AM ^
Dong punch
January 29th, 2024 at 1:12 PM ^
I stole this from a post yesterday, it is too good
January 29th, 2024 at 8:04 AM ^
I don't get this move.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:16 AM ^
The amount of money that Herbert is supposedly going to get would make you get it.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:17 AM ^
Unless he's going to be made the highest paid s&c coach in the NFL and given additional job titles then no, it wouldn't.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:25 AM ^
Sam Webb is speculating Ben is going to get around $2 million +/- a few hundred grand. We'll see if that is correct. I think that would qualify him as being the highest paid and then some.
January 29th, 2024 at 1:32 PM ^
Then I will make the point again - if Sherrone will make ~5 mill less than Jim, what is the AD going to spend that savings on?
Because it's clearly not on attempting to outbid Jim on retaining his staff at Michigan!
January 29th, 2024 at 8:29 AM ^
A friendly wager - Herbert will be the highest paid S&C coach in the NFL.
It would shock me if this was not discussed with LA’s ownership during the interview / negotiation process. Harbaugh has his vision of what’s required to be successful in The League - and the S&C “stone” was definitely revealed.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:33 AM ^
The rumors that I've see have the current highest paid S&C coach in the NFL making ~$750k. Harbaugh is offering Herbert close to $2M. At some point you just give up.
January 29th, 2024 at 9:43 AM ^
And some people claim it's not about the money.
January 29th, 2024 at 1:33 PM ^
Maybe at some point after I've matched or exceeded his offer - not before!
January 29th, 2024 at 9:08 AM ^
It's the NFL, what's not to get?
January 29th, 2024 at 1:35 PM ^
Well I don't - and I imagine many who consume this blog's content don't - prefer the NFL.
So there's that to "not get"!
January 29th, 2024 at 8:05 AM ^
Well that's a kick in the nuts for a Monday morning :(
January 29th, 2024 at 8:06 AM ^
Sanderson has some free time, I gather.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:06 AM ^
Rumors are he wanted a ten year deal Warde didn’t give it to him. So far Warde has failed to actually improve the quality of the sports teams with his contract negotiations and placements. How is he still in charge of anything?
January 29th, 2024 at 8:22 AM ^
How many college football assistants have 10 year deals?
January 29th, 2024 at 8:27 AM ^
It’s a negotiation write a contract proposal that makes him move off the ten year mark. Just saying no and ending the conversation isn’t quality.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:34 AM ^
Are you privy to the the details of the proposals and what Warde’s reaction to them was? Are you familiar with his conversations with Sherrone and what Sherrone’s position on Herbert’s contract is? How many years should he have counter-offered?
If the rumor of a 10-year ask is true (and I have no idea at all what is actually true about that, if anything) it sounds more like Herbert being offered a once-in-a-lifetime chance to hit the NFL, a move that as has been discussed on this board is pretty unusual for a college S&C coach, and he decided the only thing that could make it worth passing that up would be receiving a level of job security that is unheard of in high-level coaching.
I have no evidence to actually back up this theory of his mindset, but that’s as much evidence as all the people assuming the worst about Harbaugh and Warde have, too.
January 29th, 2024 at 10:01 AM ^
Evidence ? Public evidence says Warde is inept. Bakich gone, Harbaugh gone offering what he wanted was too little too late. Mel Pearson firing. Juwan Howard.
Every time Warde gets involved the team gets worse.
January 29th, 2024 at 10:23 AM ^
I hear Warde offered to put money on his MCard that could only be used at South Quad Down Under and Herbert wanted to be able to use it at the Wendy's and Little Caesar's in the Union. Impasse.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:42 AM ^
Admit it, you just made that scenario up out of thin air. There is less that a zero chance that you know what was discussed and how those discussions went.
January 29th, 2024 at 1:37 PM ^
Who cares?
If Harbaugh is doubling what other teams pay their S&C for Herbert, he clearly doesn't care what other people do!
Why do you & why should Michigan?!
January 29th, 2024 at 8:24 AM ^
If a 10 year deal was required to keep him, then I'm glad we didn't give it to him. That's an absurd contract demand. A million things can change in that time.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:32 AM ^
"Rumors are" just stop.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:35 AM ^
Oh good, more rumors.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:07 AM ^
I was at peace with Harbaugh leaving. I rather figured he would at some point anyway.
Finding the other Ben Herbert, if possible, might be.....well, it won't be easy, if it is even possible. He was a difference maker in ways underappreciated by some.
January 29th, 2024 at 8:07 AM ^
Glad Michigan won it all. But Jim Harbaugh is...harming the program. And Warde Manuel is terrible at his job. Michigan has always been its own worst enemy. Instead of building on winning it all, our former coach is raiding the program, our AD is way behind the curve, recruiting in the portal and elsewhere is stalled, and or new coach is being undermined by both Jim Harbaugh and Warde Manuel.
And before anyone ever moves a keystroke to type 'Jim has a right to....' blah, blah, blah. This is not about what anyone has a right to do, It is about doing the right thing. And JH is not doing the right thing. He could very easily find guys as good as Herbert and Elston (rumored to be the next domino to fall) for the Chargers. It will be comparatively MUCH harder for 37 year old Sherrone Moore to replace them. This is even true for MInter. JH could have found another coordinator just as good. But Sherrone Moore is not in a position to do that.
