What terms did Sherrone request for his assistants that would have retained Herbert, not unbalance the rest of the staff (EG does he think it is a good idea to pay a S&C coach more than a defensive coordinator? Why or why not?), that Warde declined to offer? Was it reasonable?

People are just assuming Warde is the reason Herbert left, and the only evidence provided is that they’ve already assumed bad things about him in other areas.

For example, a lot of people blamed Warde for poor vetting for Shemy and Stalions, but that seems inconsistent with complaints that Warde didn’t give enough staff freedom to Harbaugh.

How did Harbaugh not have the freedom to run his program how he wanted? The things that Warde "meddled in" are: Harbaugh's salary/compensation and response to NCAA allegations. What coach in the country unilaterally decides how to deal with NCAA allegations made against himself? What coach determines his own compensation package without the input of the school? Harbaugh was not a god, and should not be treated as such. He had a great three year run. That's it.

Michigan football is not some sacred institution that binds people to a job for life. Nor is it a Scrooge McDuck pile of gold coins that someone can dive into. People are understandably frustrated, but an open position does represent opportunities. After all, Ben Herbert was promoted at some point in his career.

I made sure all my kids were allowed to stay up and watch the Rose Bowl win and the National Championship win.  They may be too young to understand or truly enjoy watching the game, but I wanted to experience those with them.  I started at UofM in 98, and didn't think it'd be 26 years before I'd see both of those things happen after seeing Michigan win the National Championship the year before. I also realize it was 50 years before Michigan had won a National Championship before that.

Enjoy this win and know it is not something we get to enjoy often.

A friendly wager - Herbert will be the highest paid S&C coach in the NFL.

It would shock me if this was not discussed with LA’s ownership during the interview / negotiation process.  Harbaugh has his vision of what’s required to be successful in The League - and the S&C “stone” was definitely revealed.

Rumors are he wanted a ten year deal Warde didn’t give it to him. So far Warde has failed to actually improve the quality of the sports teams with his contract negotiations and placements. How is he still in charge of anything?

Are you privy to the the details of the proposals and what Warde’s reaction to them was? Are you familiar with his conversations with Sherrone and what Sherrone’s position on Herbert’s contract is? How many years should he have counter-offered?

If the rumor of a 10-year ask is true (and I have no idea at all what is actually true about that, if anything) it sounds more like Herbert being offered a once-in-a-lifetime chance to hit the NFL, a move that as has been discussed on this board is pretty unusual for a college S&C coach, and he decided the only thing that could make it worth passing that up would be receiving a level of job security that is unheard of in high-level coaching.

I have no evidence to actually back up this theory of his mindset, but that’s as much evidence as all the people assuming the worst about Harbaugh and Warde have, too.

I was at peace with Harbaugh leaving. I rather figured he would at some point anyway.

Finding the other Ben Herbert, if possible, might be.....well, it won't be easy, if it is even possible. He was a difference maker in ways underappreciated by some.

Glad Michigan won it all.  But Jim Harbaugh is...harming the program.  And Warde Manuel is terrible at his job.  Michigan has always been its own worst enemy.  Instead of building on winning it all, our former coach is raiding the program, our AD is way behind the curve, recruiting in the portal and elsewhere is stalled, and or new coach is being undermined by both Jim Harbaugh and Warde Manuel.

And before anyone ever moves a keystroke to type 'Jim has a right to....'  blah, blah, blah.  This is not about what anyone has a right to do,  It is about doing the right thing.  And JH is not doing the right thing.  He could very easily find guys as good as Herbert and Elston (rumored to be the next domino to fall) for the Chargers.  It will be comparatively MUCH harder for 37 year old Sherrone Moore to replace them.  This is even true for MInter.  JH could have found another coordinator just as good.  But Sherrone Moore is not in a position to do that.
