Fran McCaffery Suspended for two games

Submitted by DJMich23 on February 27th, 2019 at 4:36 PM

Iowa head basketball coach Fran McCaffery has been suspended for two games because of his postgame comments after losing to Ohio State yesterday. The Big Ten also added a $10,000 institutional fine and reprimand.

Apparently Fran yelled at a ref calling him a "f*****g cheater".

Per Twitter.

The graphic is funny, and I don't defend or condone him going off publicly on the official, but I'm not going to bash the man.

I live in a small farm town just outside of Iowa City.  We have a 10-11 year old boy here named Tate, who, just a few months ago, was diagnosed with DIPG (yes....that DIPG).  Tate's dad is a friend of mine as well as my insurance agent (small town after all).  Tate has gone through his last round of radiation treatment to shrink the tumor as much as possible to give him as long as he can have before the inevitable, while his family and our town and surrounding communities pray for a miracle #TaterTough

Why do I share this?  Well, about a month ago, Coach Fran, whose son Patrick went through a cancer scare, and who is active in Coaches vs. Cancer in the Capital Region, was approached about Tate, and he invited Tate's family to come to a practice at Carver.  Tate was treated like a rock star, and Fran spent hours with him, just talking with him (the pictures were posted on Facebook, and they are incredibly moving).  He made Tate feel like a normal kid...special....but normal.  Tate forgot he was sick.

So, yeah, Fran has his moments where he loses it, but I'm not going to bash the man.  He's got a LOT more good points scored in my book.

$10,000 fine. Give me a break.

Just reprimand and fine, don't actually fix the situation and give a fuck about the quality of officiating in this conference.

Fuck Delany.

I saw most of the last ten minutes or so of the game and it was absurd. I really didn’t care who won (better for us if Iowa loses but hate OSU). OSU’s 17 point lead was quickly cut to ten and the next thing you know they’re calling technicals on father and son. Every close and questionable call went OSU’s way. Hell even not close obvious fouls went OSU’s way. I can’t blame the coach for saying the same thing that I was thinking because those refs were fucking cheating.

Interesting how Fran didn't care about "cheating refs" when they were bending Michigan over a barrel against Iowa. Had Iowa in the bonus with over 10 minutes remaining in the 1st half

You could tell how hard the refs were fucking Michigan that game by the fact Fran didn't have a single outburst all game long

Calling a ref a cheating mother fucker and a fucking disgrace in a hallway after a game that you lost by 20 where a reserve dropped 30 is not a good look.

If the B1G wants better reffing, give each a $250K salary and cover the costs of travel. They can focus solely on the profession of referee-ing, which almost all of them currently don't. The B1G schools have more than enough money to chip in.

Yeah they're independent contractors hired by the conference.

Would there be any legislation preventing having salaried referees?

I'm just saying that the main reason there's inconsistency in reffing is because it's a bad system in how they're paid, how they get to games, and how they're all new crews each game. It's just a bad system, and almost all of these guys have other jobs.

If they can fix the system to have something like I said before (could be some variance of that), I really believe it would fix a lot of issues.

Giving a ref $250 K for a hobby job while the NCAA makes millions and millions and millions and the player get ZERO is ......not a "good look".

Just hire competent well-trained officials who can removed game-by-game by evaluation.

Do you want to give the ref who tossed Coach Beilein after 39 years more money for his part-time job than most state governors make?

Well, the problem is that there's active legislation preventing players from being paid, and that's a totally separate argument

And guess what? You know why these guys are reffing the games? They are the most competent people in the profession at this level. Your solution isn't actually a solution, because it already is what is going on right now.

The focus has to be on ways to make it so that the refs can be better at their jobs, and making them salaried employees with good salaries is an easy way. It would be able to turn that "hobby" into a solid profession, where they could dedicate all their time into being great refs.

Right now, especially in the social media age, there's not a whole lot of incentive into becoming an official. If it can be a viable career with good money at the college level, the product will be better.

Making it a "solid profession" only works if there is accountability for those in the profession.  A bad ref, who gets a full time gig as a ref will not become good automatically.  There needs to be a way to hold the refs accountability (like they hold press conferences, get reviewed by people whose games they ref and ultimate can lose their jobs).

Everything else in college sports is professionalized (except paying players) so bball refs should be professionalized too.  The sport is too big and too lucrative for these guys to have day jobs.

Though I'm not a fan of Fran, I will say this: after watching most of the 2nd half of Iowa@OSU last night I wondered how he was able to restrain himself as well as he did.  The refereeing was absurdly and atrociously biased in favor of the buckeyes last night, about as bad as anything I've seen this B1G season.

It's truly shameful that, with all the $$$ the B1G takes in, they don't hold refs accountable for the garbage they call and they don't apparently take corrective action in dealing with their worst offenders.  Do they even bother grading their performance after games?? Top to bottom this league is the best hoops conference in the country and yet does little to nothing about the incompetent officiating.  Delaney needs to go!

Good for McCaffery. I didn't watch the game, but I'm sure the jackass official deserved the profanity laced tirade.

This McJunkins is from Akron OH area. Either he or lots of people he knows are Buckeye fans. How does OSU keep getting away with this crap!?! Wasn’t the spot year (16) like 3 of the refs from OH or something? The one that missed the obviously PI call on UM’s OT drive had OSU connections or something? Some of you will remember more than me. Crazy Delaney allows this BS!
