Elite 11 Day 1 QB Rankings J.J McCarthy

Submitted by A_Maized on June 30th, 2020 at 11:10 PM

After day 1 of the Elite 11 QB camp JJ McCarthy was ranked 7th, OSU commit McCord was ranked 8th. 50% of the ranking is junior film and performance in pads, 50% on coaches eval in camp.  So far it’s a solid ranking.

247Sports Player Evaluation for J.J. McCarthy: "Lean frame right now. Right around the average for height at the position, but needs to fill in more in the coming years. Fantastic arm talent. Can make every throw on the field, is consistent with accuracy and placement and has clean mechanics. Smart, competitive kid who has excelled in big games and big situations. Is not a big big running threat, but shows very good pocket presence, ability to escape the rush and make throws on the move. Passing skills and approach to the game scream multi-year college starter at a high-level, the main concern would be pure strength and adding bulk to his frame." — Allen Trieu

NFL Draft Projection: Second round.

Player Comparison: Kyle Allen, QB,

You can see his performance via the link below, it has every throw last night for McCord and McCarthy.   The scores from the Pro Day last night have McCord 1st,  McCarthy 9th.   Again, that is not for the camp, only for the event last night.

It should be interesting to see how they choose the MVP this year with no 7 v 7 being played.

Edit - McCarthy starts at 2:57 of the video

Also player comparison Kyle Allen seems like a knock. I agree though it’s great that all he needs is to add mass. He will get plenty of chic fil a and bulk up. It took Harbaugh way too long to add a QB of this caliber. He looks like he’s going to be an absolute star for Michigan. This is exactly what has been holding the program back from competing for a title. Let’s hope he stays healthy and reaches his potential because that right arm of his is a god given gene pool lottery winner.

Can't say I disagree with anything you said, but didn't we all more or less say "now that we have a qb that is high caliber, we can win something!" when Shea transfered? Or even Dylan?

I do hope for the best for Mccarthy as it would help my overall psyche if Michigan football got back to clapping buckeye cheeks occasionally.

Shea had the same rep coming out of HS.  Dylan was a 5*, dead even with Jake Fromm, going into his senior season.  But he didn't participate in camps as senior and was already committed, so he dropped to the really high 4* area - out of sight, out of mind.

Otherwise, you're correct - lack of QB talent on the field has held back the offense.  I really think DCaff would have been the starter after Wisconsin if not for the head hunting...

The odds of a QB being good probably goes up if he's in Elite 11, even if not every Elite 11 QB ends up being great in college.  Past Elite 11 QB's include:  Trevor Lawrence, Tua, Justin Fields, Kyler Murray, Haskins, Sam Ehlinger, Jake Fromm, Josh  Rosen, Will Grier, Deshawn Watson, Jared Goff, etc.

Browsing past lists of the Elite 11, looks like about 1/4 to 1/3 of participants end up being very good college QB's, and about 10-20% end up being superstar college QB's.

Of the past four CFP's (16 QB's in total), 9 were Elite 11, and another three were national or regional finalists.

Michigan has gotten its share of Elite 11 QB's:  Shea Patterson (was an Elite 11 MVP), of course, and JJ McCarthy, but also Dylan McCaffrey, Cade McNamara, and Brandon Peters.  Joe Milton was a national finalist who just missed the cut to final 11.  Wilton Speight was a regional finalist.

Indeed. I still believe he was one of the best talents Michigan football has squandered over the past 20 years. Talk about life dealing you a shitty hand. Brady Hoke and company for a coaching staff, and that putrid excuse for an O-Line.

I would really like to see Devin come back and join the program some day. Always liked him.

If anyone else was wondering like I was, there are 20 participants in the elite 11.  It was obviously named by a Big Ten official.  So, JJ was ranked 7th out of 20 to 247.  Not bad.

Crazy how two different sources can watch the same thing and come up with such different opinions.  247 ranked ND commit Tyler Buchner #2 while Sports Illustrated has Buchner at #17.  Hoping SI's got the better evaluator, though I'm not confident of that.  Caleb Williams is number 1 on both lists, so he must be pretty damn good.

There is a basic flaw in any ranking system, in that when we see a ranked list of something we tend to assume that there is a straight line correlation from #1 down to #X. QB #1 is "1 unit" better than QB #2, QB #2 is "1 unit" better than QB #3, etc. In reality, it is possible for there to be a bigger difference from QB #8 to QB #9 than there is from QB#1 to QB#8. A great example of this effect can be seen when looking at the statistical rankings of college football teams (SP+, FEI). If you look at the actual metric, you'll often see that the gap between two teams "ranked" next to each other is much greater than between two teams ranked 4 or 5 spots apart.

Question.  What's the point of putting an NFL Draft Projection on a dude who hasn't even played his senior year of highschool football?  besides for like some clickybaity-thingy to talk about.

He looks great throwing the ball...a total natural.  I just hope he isn't the next Shane Morris.  Please God, you owe us a good one.

I think JJ will be Harbaugh's first elite QB here at Michigan. I hope Dylan and Joe can do well but it would not surprise me if JJ is the starter by his sophomore season.

I would add to this that I hope by then, the QB competition is crystal-clearly a meritocracy. Not that we *know* now that it isn't - because how would we - but the optics suggest it may not be.

Stated clearly, I want the most talented QB to play. If JJ has less seniority but is clearly superior, I want him out there as soon as is feasible.

In ranking him #2 on Day 2, ESPN writes "Michigan commitment ..set a solid tone, excelling on intermediate routes and especially on the move."

Not sure that describes a Michigan quarterback in a few years.  We really need a quarterback that can buy time to hit all that speed in space in intermediate routes.  Going over the top for 5 foot 10 receivers may not be a consistent weapon but like OSU on us the last few years, we need to hit speed cutting across the middle.

All we need is a guy who can make good reads, find the open WR, and get the ball to him quickly and accurately. Granted, that's a lot, but I don't think we necessarily need great running ability, just the ability to pose a threat to get the the defense defending the QB run which leaves one less backer to cover the RB, TE, or slot.

The Elite 11 rankings should be solely based on how the QBs perform at the camp. The fact that 50% of the ranking is based off evaluation of film from the fall just confirms preconceives rankings and biases and doesn't take into account how players are performing at the camp. If it was solely off of camp performance JJ would be ranked in top 5 by what analysts have been saying

agree. who the hell cares what they looked like a year ago. i made that point with rudock with my iowa friends. i said he had a legit shot at getting drafted, even won a bet. they said no way. he was terrible at iowa and will make a good doctor. i said the nfl doesn't give two shits about what he did at iowa. it's what he looks like now (his senior year at UM) that counts.

I watched the video and McCord looks older and bigger, but slower footed.  Plus McCord's release is a bit of a push versus a quick snap.  McCord had a very accurate day2, but his route trees looked much easier and without much stress in his face.  They were really making J.J. move around and never gave him two same-level throws in a row.  At midfield, McCord got like 3 easy slants in a row all basically the same route.  McCord had a bad day1 according to the sites, while McCarthy stood out in the top 3-5 performers.  SI had McCarthy rated #3 on both day1 and day2.

Both have outstanding futures and it's going to come down to who is developed better by their schools.  I actually think JJ has a shot at developing quicker as McCord will be behind CJ Stroud at OSU until he leaves. Would not be surprised to see McCord transfer down the road.

Just let him be a difference-maker when he gets here. Please, for the love of god.

I swear, the football gods just owe us one guy at this point. How many highly touted QBs have come through here in the last ten years only to be anywhere from irrelevant to "ehh they're okay"?

Maybe McCaffery or Milton can be that guy. Maybe McNamara, who knows. But please, let just one of them be the guy. Michigan needs a whole lot of things in order to beat OSU, but if you could only have one thing to try and level the playing field, an elite difference-making QB gets you as close as you're going to be able to get.

Sounds about right.  I always think it's funny when HS kids get the "needs to get bigger" comment because, yeah, this 17-year-old will need to get bigger to compete against 20-somethings.  Good thing there's a biological process (supplemented by college weight programs) that can accelerate that forward.

I'm interested to see how McCarthy looks once he gets on campus; feels like he might be an early starter.

Sam Webb reported on his weekly Michigan Recruiting Insider Podcast that JJ was up to 6'3" 197 pounds but just measured in at 6'3" 190 at the Elite 11. I think he'll be fine once he gets to campus. He should be up to 195-200 at least by the time he gets to campus with an IMG S&C program

Looks really good in the Elite11 film takes and is filling out nicely.  Measured 6'2.75" and 190 lbs at 18 years old, so should get to 6'3" and 210-220lbs by the time he would start.  Moves well on scramble drills and has one of the quickest releases in his class.  Excited for him to get on campus and compete for the job ... likely after a redshirt first season.

Plus, the class he is helping recruit shows his charisma / leadership skills.
