Does Howard Survive This?
He's had plenty of issues before keeping his anger in check, but you CAN NOT throw a punch at an opposing coach/player as the frickin' head coach. Just utter lunacy, never seen it.
Minimum I have to imagine he's suspended for rest of year.
Do we think he gets fired?
February 20th, 2022 at 3:35 PM ^
I'm so disappointed in JH. This was kind of a 2nd chance for the Fab5. And I really felt Juwan was repairing things but man this was sooooo bad. I think he forces Michigan's hand here
February 20th, 2022 at 3:36 PM ^
I am sad.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:37 PM ^
I’m interested to hear what was said to make him throw the punch, obviously he was frustrated, and 2 wrongs don’t make a right. But what did the assistant say to trigger him, because he didn’t throw it at Gard which is who the argument started with.
I’ll reserve judgment for now, my gut says he shouldn’t coach the rest of the year, if nothing obscene was said then he should be fired.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:37 PM ^
Are ppl really parsing the diffence between a punch and a slap?! Sweet baby jebus, he threw hands, this is beyond using silly semantics, ffs ppl, he can't do that, end, stop.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:37 PM ^
Definitely suspended for a while. Possibly fired. He was trying to quickly get through the handshake line before Wisky's coach put his hands on Juwan. Juwan is a Edit: Southside guy, he isn't fucking around with that pansy ass bullshit, BUT he should not have thrown a punch. You get paid millions to be a leader of men. You represent the university. It's unacceptable.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:47 PM ^
He’s from Chicago, not Detroit
February 20th, 2022 at 3:50 PM ^
Chicago.

Juwan is from Chicago

He's from Chicago. Webber and Rose are the Detroit guys.

I have to imagine that Coach B will be getting a phone call.

February 20th, 2022 at 3:41 PM ^
Sorry, but none of that happens if Gard hadn't grabbed Juwan in. He then gets in his face and escalated the situation. I've watched the video many times. The guy Juwan pushed/slapped had a death grip on TWill, who was trying to get away.
He's got his players' backs and they know it.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:53 PM ^
That doesn't fly. Gard is 5 foot nothing, Juwan is 6'8 and chiseled. Gard was never a threat to hurt Juwan unless he kicked him in the dick.
Sometimes in life (actually, pretty much all the time), you have to diffuse the situation, especially in a very high position like head coach. Howard should have knocked his hand off him and walked off. This was a TERRIBLE reaction.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:04 PM ^
So Gard can grab Juwan cause he’s shorter?
Come on.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:07 PM ^
Did I say that? When did I say that?
He absolutely should not have grabbed Howard.
But Howard's response to that was absolutely ridiculous.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:24 PM ^
Grabbing Howard is a mitigating circumstance. That fact will -- and should -- save Howard's job.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:29 PM ^
Why bring up both their heights and the fact Juwan is “chiseled”?
Can you explain what you were getting at there?
February 20th, 2022 at 4:30 PM ^
Would be happy to.
Gard was/is never a threat to Juwan.
Knock his hands away and walk off. Don't go insane and start throwing haymakers.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:07 PM ^
Juwan did nothing that would be considered a "haymaker". Haymakers knock people down.
February 20th, 2022 at 6:06 PM ^
You make it sound like Juwan swung at Gard. Not accurate and definitely not haymakers.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:21 PM ^
Perhaps none of this happens ifJuwan hadn't been running his mouth to Gard as they were approaching each other before any of the physical stuff happened? To me this is all on Juwan. Everything spawned from him being a whiny ass. Be an adult, lead young men

February 20th, 2022 at 5:10 PM ^
You mean on Neath, who had already hit TWill and Diabate? That Wisconsin player?
February 20th, 2022 at 3:41 PM ^
Indefinite suspension and investigation. But If someone grabs my arm while I'm trying to walk away, I probably go off as well.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:53 PM ^
I totally agree with this. Take immediate action so it is clear this behavior is not being condoned. Then find out everything that happened and what it seems like after the fallout settles.
February 20th, 2022 at 7:49 PM ^
What would Don Draper do?
February 20th, 2022 at 8:30 PM ^
Sleep with Gard's wife

Could you post this a few more times?
February 20th, 2022 at 4:56 PM ^
Gone to the association.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:43 PM ^
Coach Howard won’t be fired, besides the first punches thrown were by number 0 of Wisconsin.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:52 PM ^
The first physical violence was by Juwan
Regardless if he was trying to grab instead of hit, regardless of whether Gard grabbed him or somebody said something, he was the first person to strike somebody and that’s where the attention will be focused
February 20th, 2022 at 3:44 PM ^
That was REALLY bad. If a player did that, I see a bad suspension. Coach? Bare minimum he's sitting for the rest of the season. Idk what the Wiscy assistant said or if Juwan took exception to him grabbing Twill, but it wasn't warranted. Worse yet, he put his players in a spot that could get them suspended too. I didn't watch the replay too many times, but Diabate seemed to be taking swings. He is probably going to have to pay some price for his coach putting him in a tough position.
I wouldn't object too strongly if Howard was canned. I feel that's the last thing Michigan basketball needs right now, but it just is hard to defend him. Juwan seems like such a good man, but he's had his moments where he loses his cool. I can relate, but he's in a high profile position. Tough moment for Michigan basketball. The team will bounce back.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:47 PM ^
Grayson Allen at Duke once threw a punch as wasn't even called for a foul.
Wisconsin assistants as a group are pushing into the Michigan line. Howard already said they touched him first and then they crowded him as he was being backed up. Wisconsin escalated the situation when they should have been backing up. Does anyone on the Wisconsin side look like they are trying to de-escalate the conflict? Anyone? Anyone at all? (Before JH made his move?)
February 20th, 2022 at 3:44 PM ^
I love Michigan, but how would 100% of this board react if this was another Big Ten coach doing this?
February 20th, 2022 at 4:10 PM ^
When Woody Hayes did this, he was fired instantly, and he was a legend who built up a ton of goodwill in Columbus. Howard’s gotta go. Hate to say it, but he crossed the line in a big way.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:46 PM ^
What did the five fingers say to the face?
February 20th, 2022 at 3:47 PM ^
Official UM policy is automatic dismissal for workplace violence. Per UM’s own rules he has to be fired.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:36 PM ^
Surprised it took this long, honestly. He should've been canned the first time he demonstrated a pick and roll on a player.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:50 PM ^
I'm not justifying it, ,but Howard was moving along in the line until Gard stoped him to yell at him and put his hands on Howard.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:58 PM ^
This is what people are missing. Opposing coach stops Howard and puts his hands on him. But for that, Howard moves along and the incident never happens.
Howard needs to be reprimanded and maybe suspended, however, it would be unjust for him to lose his job over it.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:53 PM ^
Disgraceful. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but my opinion is that if you're not solidly on the side of termination, then you also reflect poorly on the university. Coach's actions were an embarrassment and anything short of termination is a stain on U of M. Go root for sPaRtY if that's a good look for you. I always enjoyed mocking that old neanderthal from Columbus for the '78 Gator Bowl, and now Coach Howard goes and does something like this, smh.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:34 PM ^
What a clever parody of sanctimonious moralism. LS&A taught you well. Bravo.
February 21st, 2022 at 12:12 AM ^
Not what they taught you in SMTD, huh?
February 20th, 2022 at 6:14 PM ^
Are you still a Michigan fan after the Dr. Anderson sexual abuse scandal? Are you going to justify your fandom because the current administration handled it to your satisfaction? I am sure you were solidly on the side of pay the victims which is admirable but your high and mighty stance seems like it would be hard to be a Michigan fan after the way the people in charge handled the sexual abuse at the time.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:54 PM ^
It's a bad look, however, he isn't going anywhere.
The fact that the other coach put his hands on him first is going to save him.
Maybe he gets suspended for a bit. He is not getting fired.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:55 PM ^
He should be but he won’t be. This was totally unacceptable.
But if Bo’s statue survived Anderson, Juwan will survive this. My guess is suspended rest of regular season.
