Does Howard Survive This?
He's had plenty of issues before keeping his anger in check, but you CAN NOT throw a punch at an opposing coach/player as the frickin' head coach. Just utter lunacy, never seen it.
Minimum I have to imagine he's suspended for rest of year.
Do we think he gets fired?
February 20th, 2022 at 3:08 PM ^
I'm really at a loss for words, who knows what's going to happen?
Suspension for sure, firing? Maybe.
Not good at all, Juwan needs to have more control, Gard was being a dick with the TO and acting like that but you just can't do that, Juwan.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:20 PM ^
Was the TO a bigger dick move than full court pressing Wisconsin’s subs in a game that was already decided?
February 20th, 2022 at 3:52 PM ^
Ok juwan, explain this one. Also, please do a better job coaching and controlling your temper instead of spending your time on mgoblog
February 20th, 2022 at 3:24 PM ^
Cmon, Juan was full court pressing with some starters on the court against walk ons.
Tell me you've ever seen that level of WTF, from a coach.
Internet is blowing up.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:36 PM ^
Hahaha Juwan full court pressing when game is over then has the balls to say something about the TO. Soft as fuck!!!
February 20th, 2022 at 3:52 PM ^
How do we even know he said something about the TO or was pissed about it? That’s just what the announcers said. He could easily have been pissed about a million things Wisconsin or Gard did. Seems weird everyone is already running with this narrative when it was basically just speculation from one guy.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:42 PM ^
I was at the game. I talked with some team-affiliated people who sat directly behind the bench. They told me UW’s TO was the issue.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:42 PM ^
Yes, it was the timeout that really pissed him off. I am surprised he doesn't sound more apologetic or even the least bit regretful of his behavior. That is very disappointing.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:51 PM ^
Your disappointment is very disappointing. Good post game presser. Surprised he even did one.
February 20th, 2022 at 7:46 PM ^
Sorry you're disappointed. Perhaps I should rephrase this. When your boss and his boss both immediately call their Wisconsin counterparts to apologize, and you show no remorse at all for your actions, it is more than disappointing. It's fucking stupid as hell.
February 20th, 2022 at 7:48 PM ^
It’s OK.
February 20th, 2022 at 6:23 PM ^
This was my take, too: Gard putting his hand on Juwan's chest catalyzed the affair. But it's going to be down the list of unacceptable occurrences once you nail the assistant--whether the guys was egging Juwan on, messing with one of our players. . . And your basically giving your players license, as coach to go when you throw the first hand--open or closed.
I am incredibly sad about this.
February 20th, 2022 at 7:06 PM ^
He saw clearly that is was wrong for players to jump into the fight. He completely agreed with the reporter asking about it. He gave a great answer to that. But he doesn't see he is the one that lead them into it. I mean, there wasn't just the one outburst of throwing the punch at the coach. It took a lot to hold him back after that.
There is a anger management problem with Coach Howard. He should not be a head coach until he gets to the place where he sees it was wrong for him to fight too, in the same way he saw it was wrong for the players to do it.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:10 PM ^
He didn’t say shit. He hit the guy.
The thing that sucks the most is that the program that created that huge doucher brad Davison. Suckered juwan into doing exactly what they wanted him to.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:09 PM ^
He should at least take a seat for the rest of the season and get himself some help.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:09 PM ^
I love Juwan, loved everything about him, loved this season.
But he threw a hand that landed and started a brawl where a bunch of punches were thrown by his and the other teams players
It hurts deep, but if this was happening at any other school we'd probably be saying he's gone.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:04 PM ^
At least he has a job with the Fighting Irish amirite? Lulz
Let’s let it cool down, hard having two erratic HCs at the same time, but this is family and we deal with it.
February 20th, 2022 at 7:21 PM ^
but this is family and we deal with it.
What happened didn't happen in the "family".
I don't think anyone outside of Michigan circles is thinking that it should be left with the Michigan "family" to deal with this. And I don't think a lot of people inside Michigan circles are thinking that either.
This is egregious. I'm sorry. I like Juwan Howard. It was a very cool moment when he made his way to congratulate Jim Harbaugh after the Ohio St game. But keeping him on as coach would be a very bad look for Michigan. It's clear by now he has anger problems.
February 20th, 2022 at 6:11 PM ^
Should Howard have thrown a punch? No. He does claim someone laid a hand on him and he was just responding. Note the excerpt from ESPN below. I get the impropriety of what took place but it wasn't as if no one else was pure as the fallen snow. The man made a mistake. Suspend him for a few games but fire him? Because he cast a bad light on our holy University? On please....after Anderson, Schlissel and a host of other not so positive items, this is not a mortal sin. How many times have we seen Izzo grab a kid in the heat of passion?
I have to admit as someone who spent more than a few days in a locker room, that Howard has the kind of passion that would make me want to play for him, but that's me.
From ESPN's website:
"I didn't like the timeout they called, and I'm being totally honest with you," Howard said. "I thought it was not necessary at that moment, especially with it being a large lead. ... I thought that wasn't fair to our guys. And so that's what happened."
Howard said he reacted after someone from Wisconsin put hands on him, though he didn't specify who did it.
"Someone touched me, and I think it was very uncalled for, for them to touch me, as we were verbalizing and communicating with one another. That's what escalated it," he said.
The Badgers were up 15 when Gard took a timeout with 15 seconds left.
February 20th, 2022 at 7:23 PM ^
Juwan shouldn't be fired but "Robert Anderson was worse" is not an excuse for anything.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:10 PM ^
Really embarrassing for the team & the program.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:15 PM ^
The situation started in the handshake line when Gard put his hands on Juwan who then overreacted. I see both coaches getting suspended with Juwan’s penalty more severe. Manuel should take action before the Big 10 does.
Gard is an ass and that’s why he had a quasi-mutiny before the season started.
Not a good look for Michigan basketball.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:10 PM ^
Hard to say. Really bad look. No idea what was said but can never take a swing at a coach.
I think he is done for at least the regular season. He may be gone gone.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:57 PM ^
It wasn't a punch at all. He tried to snatch him up by the collar. You see can see his hand squeeze as he misses the shirt. You can also that guy continually marching forward towards Michigan's coaches and players, and somebody on Wisconsin's staff has a grip on Williams and won't let go. Juwan wasn't right for doing what he did, but there's more blame to go around than just him. And in no world was that a punch. It's more likely he was snatching a dude up because they had hands on his players.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:25 PM ^
Did not say he punched him. Said he took a swing. An open hand swing is still a swing. Grabbing and pushing is a bad look swing your arm is, in my opinion, a worse look.
no one handled it well but this will fall more on Michigan than Wisconsin. It will be because of that swing.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:30 PM ^
Right, and Woody Hayes was just trying to help that player get his helmet off. Stop with the excuses please. Howard needs to go, you just can’t do that as a coach.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:44 PM ^
Pretty much, yes to this. Probably Gard gets some time, Juwan will get more. A Wisconsin assistant will get some. So will Diabate.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:11 PM ^
Absolutely unacceptable. I’m shocked but my initial reaction is fire him. That’s some Woody hayes shit
February 20th, 2022 at 4:13 PM ^
Woody Hayes was an old POS that lost control and deserved to be fired. No difference here. You do not throw punches at the opponent - plain and simple. No way to defend it
February 20th, 2022 at 4:50 PM ^
His reaction is not ok, but it’s not woody Hayes level. Woody throat chopped a player during the game.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:04 PM ^
Woody Hayes was a sick old POS that even OSU fans didn't defend - he hit an opposing player that was in football gear with a single swing. This incident could have resulted in an all out brawl with several people possibly getting hurt. You just don't throw punches no matter what was said - plain and simple. No way to defend it
February 20th, 2022 at 5:25 PM ^
Typical boomer comment.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:11 PM ^
I wouldn’t be surprised, and wouldn’t feel that it was unwarranted
edit: if he gets fired, that is
February 20th, 2022 at 5:48 PM ^
I'd like to get all the facts before firing anybody and pretty sure M will go that route too.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:13 PM ^
I like him more now. Every coach should be able to punch a Wisconsin coach once in their careers. That’s Juwan’s one.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:30 PM ^
Damn straight. Cathartic moment there. Unprofessional but meh. This is entertainment. I’m entertained.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:11 PM ^
Meh, any other coach in the league do this we’d have pitchforks on here talking about how they don’t belong in the big ten.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:02 PM ^
Not I. The guy’s job is to coach kids playing with a ball. He made a bad choice. Take his lumps and grow from it. The knee jerk reaction society has to any mistake, on any level, these days is absurd. Allow people to learn. I have no doubt Juwan AND Gard will.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:33 PM ^
"Grow from it"? He's not a 19 year old kid. He has decades of experience playing and coaching at both levels. If he hasn't grown out of his need to throw a punch when he's unhappy, he never will.
February 20th, 2022 at 5:42 PM ^
Coach Howard is 50 years old and should have the ability to not take a swing at someone IF that is what occurred. I'm not sure what happened other than an unclear video that doesn't seem to show everything.
February 21st, 2022 at 3:32 AM ^
That "we" would be on here with pitchforks says more about us than it does about the action itself. The statement above about being entertained was very satirical in a "its funny because its true" kind of way from what I inferred.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:13 PM ^
He is done and should be done. It’s not the fact he tried to grab that assistant it’s the fact he put his players in that situation.
Trying to make the tournament and you pull that getting your kids suspended. Don’t let the door hit you
February 20th, 2022 at 3:14 PM ^
I think they’re gonna have to force him to step down
Just threw his whole career away to fight an assistant in a meaningless game at Wisconsin. Unbelievable
February 20th, 2022 at 7:35 PM ^
Agree. That was stupidity beyond belief. He's supposed to be guiding his young men, not the one taking a swing at opponents and triggering this fiasco. Still can't believe what happened every time I watch that video. And keep in mind, this isn't the first time. He also went after that Maryland coach last year
February 20th, 2022 at 3:14 PM ^
According to RCMB, Martelli is the head coach. Or is he only the coach when Michigan is going good?
Maybe we find out the whole story on why he did what he did.
Have him sit out the rest of the year.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:15 PM ^
Honestly, I don't know.
I know there's a lot of people out there who are defending him from getting fired, and I don't know why. You have to accept it is a possibility.
This is a REALLY BAD look. For all of us that make fun of Bobby Knight throwing a chair, this is worse.
Do I think he'll be fired? No, probably not. But it would not at all surprise me, especially for Michigan that prides themselves on the image of being an honorable program.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:15 PM ^
I'm not sure if he punched him or tried to grab the the dude. It doesn't look good. I'm assuming he'll be suspended for a while.
February 20th, 2022 at 3:15 PM ^
Has a college coach ever taken a swing at another coach before? I can’t recall ever seeing this happen.
February 20th, 2022 at 4:09 PM ^
John Chaney threatened to kill Calipari.
