Does Howard Survive This?

Submitted by ldd10 on February 20th, 2022 at 3:06 PM

He's had plenty of issues before keeping his anger in check, but you CAN NOT throw a punch at an opposing coach/player as the frickin' head coach.  Just utter lunacy, never seen it.

Minimum I have to imagine he's suspended for rest of year.

Do we think he gets fired?

50/50. I think a lot will come down to two things:

1) The team seemed to follow Howard's example. A UM kid may have been sucker punched, too. However, it was Howard that took it to that level and players followed. Not good.

2) Whether people inside the AD privately think Howard was a good hire to begin with. It appears he can recruit really well and he did quite well with leftover talent but do they think he can build and coach a consistent program? If there were any doubts in Warde's mind, he'll probably be gone.

On the flip side, it wasn't all Howard. Another grown man grabbed him and wouldn't let him go. That in and of itself was for a juvenile reason on Howard's end but the other grown man did the grabbing. Who knows what was said during that moment? I think it's clear that Howard is a dude that is quick to reaction in both directions. He becomes overly enthusiastic (something we like about him) and he becomes overly angry when he feels insulted.

I'm calling it 50/50 as of right now. His staying still gets him a massive suspension for himself and some of his team. No getting around that. I like Howard as a person but have been a bit iffy on him as a coach since we hired him. I wanted to see how he did with pretty much all of the major Beilein guys gone and it hasn't been great.

Juwan should absolutely face repercussions, but go back and watch it in slow mo, is it just be or does that assistant first put his hands on Williams and Faulds? To me that’s at least worth whatever punishment Juwan faces. You can’t have a coach getting physics with opposing players.

Probably gone but I will donate extra if they keep him.

It sets a really bad example.  Can’t see the university being able to keep him.  It sucks.  I was so happy for him to be the coach and he is such a competitor.  So emotionally invested.  Seems like too much.

Yes, wish he would have connected after #0 suckerpunched TWill  .  Facts are:

- Wisconsin coach laid hands on Howard as Howard attempted to ignore him

- Wisconsin Asst coach grabbed our players as coaches exchanged words

- Wisconsin player threw first (sucker) punch .  Good for Diabate having his teammate's back

Comments in these threads are pathetic

The bald Wisky assistant coach with the beard directly to the right of T-Will looks like he's trying to calm things down, but his colleague that runs in between him and Gard looks like the one who really escalates things once the coaches are initially separated. I really hope they find out what that guy said to Howard and to the players and he gets disciplined as well.

That being said, as the head coach, you cannot react that way in that situation. If you walk away, the focus can be on what Gard did and you control the narrative. Trying to grab at another coach after you are separated takes that narrative out of your hands (no pun intended) and now changes the perception of who the aggressor is.

I don't know what's worse, the whole incident or people blaming Gard. Looked like Juwan was going to ignore, walk by him, Gard grabbed his arm to say something to him and Juwan escalates.

Not ok what Juwan did but the escalation was Gard grabbing Juwan’s arm.  It was on after that.  Gard shouldn’t have touched him.  Juwan should have walked away but I 100% understand why he was pissed when Gard physically stopped him from continuing to walk by.

No excuse for throwing hands but don’t act like Gard is 100% innocent.

He probably will, but he probably shouldn't. He's gotten very emotional multiple times and he can't keep his cool.

Just overall, this team is way worse than it should be, they were going to miss the tournament, for sure will now. The optics around the program are so terrible, that firing him might be a needed change.

Glad it didn't turn into another Malice at the Palace. Seemed like the activity on the court was pretty well isolated from the fans. Good on them for not getting involved. I hate to think that our student-athletes could've been put in that type of scenario, trying to defend their coach.

I thought Faulds did a great job trying to play peacemaker when it was clear what was going on with Juwan and Gard. Good for that young man.

Watch the video in depth and slow motion.  All of it.  It looks like it was an open handed slap instead of a punch.  Meanwhile, let’s wait and see what happens after the reviews.  I’m sure he’ll face discipline, just not sure how much.

It wasn't really a bona fide punch, more like an attempt at grabbing with quite a bit of momentum, and I suppose if we are going to split this along "sacked / not sacked" lines, this might be what saves him if anything. That said, I would expect we'll get an apology and I assume a reprimand from the conference as well as Michigan is guaranteed.

I find myself uninterested in the pearl-clutching takes - it's an emotional game and this has been a trying season, I am sure, but all the same, you can't do...that. Greg Gard is an ass, but be this as it may, you have to handle it....not like that. I will definitely be interested to see how they handle this once everyone is back in Ann Arbor - not sure how much of this is going to be meted out via calls while everyone is still in Madison.

This isn’t his first temper tantrum and this is beyond a fireable offense. He just submarined recruiting and if we can lose a future hall of fame coach of the football team for setting a piss poor example back in the 90s we can definitely cut ties with an unproven coach who just made the entire program look horrid on national television.

We need to cut ties immediately for the image of the program and set precedent.
Juwan needs to go.

It will absolutely hurt recruiting.

Every coach in the country in competition will negatively recruit with this in every living room in America. And they will do so successfully.

I wouldn’t want my kids playing for Howard. That was pathetic. The Wisconsin coach needs to be suspended for the remainder of the year as well but it doesn’t get JH off the hook. He damn near caused a melee.

This is the ultimate in terrible hot takes. Every coach has something on every other coach. You can be sure of that given how much time and energy is spent on recruiting. This won't change his ability to recruit at all. If anything, this season's mediocre results with a highly ranked recruiting class could hurt (as another poster replied to you) but even that is too early for us to know (its only one season).

Hot take?

The guy is in charge of one of the biggest basketball programs in the country at a school that has prided itself on professionalism. He sets the standards for students of the entire university.

He was never in any danger nor needed to defend himself in any physical situation.

Yes I am aware that two of the Wisconsin coaches were also completely unprofessional and pathetic as well. IMO their actions warrant no less than a suspension through the rest of the season for escalating a situation to the point that words being exchanged is completely understandable from our staff, however there was no excuse, not any whatsoever that excuse him doing what he did.

Unless in actual physical danger or trying to defend someone else from physical danger/prevent physical danger Juwan Howard gets paid millions of dollars to be the coolest head in the room.

Of all head coaching positions being a head coach of students is the one position where you have to be the most accountable.
let alone at a place like the university of Michigan where your paycheck should be a constant reminder of just how high you’ve ascended and what’s expected of you.

Nothing that happened today warrants his reaction and when you talk about knee jerk reactions maybe you and some others need to think about your knee jerk reaction to make excuses for what is absolutely a fireable offense and that if he isn’t fired he should thank his lucky stars that he isn’t.

When some others have commented saying “some of you have never been in a fight” as if that makes your case when it’s actually quite the opposite. Some of us have been in a fight or many fights and because of that we can actually weigh the situation more accurately than those that haven’t and that gives a greater perspective on just how sideways that a situation like that can go and it’s best to avoid it if and when you can.

I downvoted you on the recruiting comments but I will acknowledge some good points about having to be the coolest head and the extra responsibility of leading students.  Fair points.  I am in the suspend for the rest of the season camp.

Do you think because you wouldn’t allow your kid to play for Juwan that applies to all parents?  Do you think they are bad parents if they let their kid play for Juwan?  Do you have a kid who is good enough to play for Juwan?  Are you overreacting?

A lot of parents will be fine having their kid play for a coach who defends them.

That was fucking embarrassing, pathetic, and inexcusable. Yes, he should be suspended for the rest of the season. He may have ruined the team's tourney chances too, given that suspensions are coming with nothing but tournament-caliber teams left of the schedule. What a dismal failure to be a leader.

Should he be fired? Idk, I'll wait til I'm less pissed off to opine on that.

Juwan should have handled it better and UM will do what they do.  I hope Big Ten disciplines Gard.  You can't get in another grown man's face like that and expect nothing to happen.   I thought Juwan was completely in the right until he reached back over once someone got in between them. Can't do that.
