Coaching staff is complete

Submitted by umbig11 on
There will be no more departures. Despite how many of us feel about Pep & Drevno they are returning. Offensive coaching assignments remain unsettled to this day. They will be settled well before spring. Warriner will remain an Analyst. Warriner will be working one week ahead preparing the team for the following week. McElwain started yesterday. One area of his duties that are not getting enough attention yet is that he will be developing the weekly game plans. Yes, we know many contribute to the plans, scouting, analysts, OC etc., but McElwain will be counted on to deliver those each Saturday. So, when the position assignments are complete. I think we will see some sort of title next to WR Coach. There will be a streamlined effort when it comes to play-calling. More McElwain than chatter on the headsets.

Two things confuse me about all this - wonder if you have any insight. Why is Drev on the staff running OL, when our OL has been mediocre at best since he’s been here, and Warriner presided over some of the most face-mashing OL units at OSU? Also, why do we need a QB coach in Pep when we have Jim Harbaugh? Isn’t one of the big draws for QB recruits getting coached by Harbaugh? (Or should I read between the lines and this means Pep really isn’t doing much of import any longer?)

So we are counting on a guy that ran some of the most braindead offenses to devise gameplans for us. What the fuck is going?

Serious question: How can you reconcile the last sentence with the rest of your post? Nothing about this seems streamlined at all. Not trying to shoot the messenger, I guess I'm just confused.

I like this.  Up to now, we have not had a true OC with experience as an OC.  Drevno and Pep are not experienced OCs.  I guess Jedd was close and we had good experience with him.  I really think that JM will help a lot.

Maybe Drevno was in over his head as a coordinator and will be again be a great o-line coach when focused on that. Maybe McSharklovin's offfense will look like the offense he ran with Grier, except with Patterson, who's even better! Maybe McSharklovin's rep for being a total asshole while at UF is totally overblown. Maybe Pep Hamilton doesn't deserve all the crap he gets here. Maybe Harbaugh really hasn't forgotten how to run a successful offense.

In the OP UMBig11 just said McElwain will be coming up with the game plans.  He didn't say he was the OC or calling the plays during the games.  I'm assuming game planning means studying the defense to come up with what their strengths and weaknesses are, what tendencies they tend to show in down and distance and field position, etc.

Amen. (For evidence, see RR attrition and the Hoke tenure in general.) It's a common misunderstanding -- that, e.g., a last place team cannot technically rank lower than last place when they try the next time. But that has to be an oversimplification once one acknowledges that this year's last place team can certainly be even **less** statistically accomplished than last year's last place team. In other words, being very bad can never promise that "the basement" has been reached and "it can only get better" because there is no such thing as the basement. "Bad," as a concept, is bottomless.

Harbaugh has more football knowledge than any of us. It’s not blind loyalty, I’m skeptical, but I’m supportive. Let’s hope these coaches have the guys prepared every day. Complaining about it will serve no purpose unless it’s that important to you, should Harbaugh fail, to say you said it first, which, cool, I guess.....

Hoke and Rich Rod have more knowledge than any of us too. I'm a lot more excited for this season now that McElwain is here, but the "He didn't forget how to coach football!" argument just takes me back to the Rich Rod days. All head football coaches have more football knowledge than fans, fired ones and employed ones.

However, neither is the current head coach, so they are meaningless to me anymore. I just don’t see the point in railing against a decision a coach made about his staff. I still have faith in Harbaugh, I would like to see more wins, but I still think he is the best person for the job, until such time as I don’t. Hiring the former HC of Florida to be the WR coach and gameplanner seems like a good move to me. I seriously doubt Harbaugh hired him for his good looks or because he is stupid.
