Coaching staff is complete

There will be no more departures. Despite how many of us feel about Pep & Drevno they are returning. Offensive coaching assignments remain unsettled to this day. They will be settled well before spring. Warriner will remain an Analyst. Warriner will be working one week ahead preparing the team for the following week. McElwain started yesterday. One area of his duties that are not getting enough attention yet is that he will be developing the weekly game plans. Yes, we know many contribute to the plans, scouting, analysts, OC etc., but McElwain will be counted on to deliver those each Saturday. So, when the position assignments are complete. I think we will see some sort of title next to WR Coach. There will be a streamlined effort when it comes to play-calling. More McElwain than chatter on the headsets.

Everyone is happy with jay harbaugh at rb coach? Even tho that position group offensively was the best I never heard anything positive about jay all season on here....

They sure could have blocked better!

For actual running, however, I remember reading several things from the backs about how they were learning important technique details form him. It sounded like he is a good student of the game and was coaching them up well in that regard.

Am I the only one who thinks it's strange to have a rb coach who has never played or previously coached that position? How can you teach something you don't know? Jay seems like a nice guy and good coach, but this just doesn't seem professionally appropriate. Maybe I'm wrong - I'm not around coaching staffs much anymore, and certainly not at that level even when I was.

Where was the complaint about his performance? I just find it odd to have someone coach a position they did not play at some point in their career. Perhaps this is common at the D1 level - I do not know. I would be very curious to know what percentage of RB coaches (at this level) did not play the position ever. Besides, just because the running backs did well last year does not prove that it was (or was not) due to Jay - just not enough information to make a strong claim either way yet.

I find it curious as well. Perhaps he's just a voracious consumer of football knowledge and a coaching wunderkind. I haven't heard much in the way of negative comments regarding his coaching, he seems well-liked. I just find it odd that someone can be proficient enough at coaching a new position group to be a position coach at a top football university so quickly. Either it's not that hard to do well (doubtful) or he's kind of a natural.

Jay's resume:

  • 4 years undergrad assistant at Oregon State
  • 3 years QC at the Ravens
  • 2 years TE coach UM
  • 1 year RB coach UM

That's a fair amount of football experience for a 28 year-old. I guess I just don't understand how you coach the nuances of a position that you've never played or coached before.

Unfortunately there’s a reason he didn’t get offers. There’s a reason the colts fired him and there’s a reason the Cleveland fucking Browns let him walk

Hopefully Solomon would qualify as a 9... The way I see it: 10's: Gary, full stop 9's: Solomon, DPJ, black, long, vert, winovich, Bush... 8's: Higdon, Hudson, Collins, bredeson, ruiz, mccaffrey... 7's: mone, Evans, Martin, Hudson, Peters, woods, stuber, Filiaga... I just hope it's not a guy in the 9 category.

My pointless guess would be Mettelus. I thought I read he prefers viper over safety. There were late season rumors Woods could be cutting until his playing time. And losing him would be a 7-8 cause he is a starter at a position with no known quantity of depth.

Some of the speculated/guessed players have been seen in multiple videos posted by the Michigan football twitter account. I’m starting to believe it is Grant Perry, who I haven’t seen in those same vids

Walker, for continuing our 5 Star RB bust tradition Big Mike Mone Grant Perry JBB for position only Mettelus Ambry Thomas would be higher for me, but since he’s mentioned I’ll put him on here TWJ Not sure whom else on the roster meets the criteria of 7-8.
