Another tidbit from the free part of the paywalled content is the potential of Wink bringing Drew Wilkins with him. Sam seems to posit that he will be working LBs, but his experience seems to be more with the Edge/DL so that might be worth looking at.

Drew also seems to have a younger brother, Kevin, who seems to have followed him from the Ravens to his stint with the Giants. With no other frame of reference I'm good with two younger coaches/staffers from the Ravens tree.

Um, I’m a Giants fan.  We liked Wink.  With the amount of talent they had on that side of the ball (not much) and with the position the offense often put them in he did an admirable job.  He didn’t get fired for performance.  It was that he and Daboll hated each other for various reasons.  Now, if he gets the job I have no clue if it will work out but the dude can coach defense

The Athletic agrees with your take:

Daboll and Martindale didn’t have a pre-existing relationship before he was brought in as the Giants defensive coordinator last season. But the two have very differing personalities. Martindale has said numerous times it’s important for him to maintain composure on the sidelines. Meanwhile, Daboll is often red-faced and fiery on the sidelines, throwing tablets in heated outbursts. While those clashing personalities had found a way to work together during a successful season — the Giants won a playoff game for the first time in a decade in 2022 — the frays showed more in a losing season.

Martindale’s departure is a big loss for the Giants. While the defense struggled early — along with the rest of the team — it morphed into one of the more reliable parts of the Giants, generating takeaway after takeaway down the stretch. From Week 11 on, the Giants defense ranked 13th in points allowed (20.1).

Martindale has a reputation as a player-friendly coach with plenty of support in the Giants locker room.

“It sucks learning a new scheme, if that is what happens,” Pro Bowl defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence said when asked about the importance of keeping the group intact with Martindale. “So that probably would be the most heartbreaking thing, honestly, and him being just a good leader of men. Things like that would probably be the hardest thing to go about.”

Don "Wink" Martindale is in his fourth season leading the Ravens' defense, which has continued its long-standing tradition of excellence by ranking consistently among the league's best defensive units. In 2020, Martindale's unit allowed the NFL's second-fewest points (18.9) and seventh-fewest yards (329.8) per game. Since Martindale was named defensive coordinator (2018), Baltimore has produced an NFL-best 12 defensive TDs (tied LAR) and has permitted both the league's fewest points per game (18.2) and total yards per game (307.8). Over the last three seasons (2018-20), Baltimore also leads the league in number of players to record a sack (33) and second-half points allowed (401), while ranking No. 2 in both fourth-down stops (41) and opponent QB rating (81.9). Martindale's 2019 group achieved a strong No. 4 ranking (300.6 ypg), helping the team to a franchise-best

Love this. Clink is much needed on this staff. Let’s do what we need to do to keep Mike Hart. I’m sure I’m wrong but it feels like our running backs and quarter backs haven’t fumbled since Mike Hart joined the staff.

When Clink was hired, he immediately turned our major weakness defending against OSU passing offenses into a strength. Cannot say how important this is to the defense, that he's coming back. Go Blue

He's GOT to be the DC in waiting, if we bring in Wink it should not be for more than a year or two. I have a hard time thinking Clink didn't learn what he needed to from MacDonald and Minter, so glad Clink is staying around!

Good to get a win.

I was starting to feel like this was a Florida Marlins scenario, where they won the World Series in 1997 and then completely dismantled the team to save $$.

I know these are different situations, but as a fan it is painful to see us lose so many key personnel rather than locking down everyone and gearing up for another run.

This is excellent news for Moore, the players, and the program overall.

I realize he'll never address this in public, but I'd love to know the specific reasons why Moore concluded neither Elston or Clinkscale were competent enough to be the full-time DC.

My guess, based on what I heard from Sam this week, is that Moore wants to pull someone in who has experience in calling plays.

Maybe this is a situation where Moore promised Clink that this year is a sort of "apprenticeship" under Wink where Clink can learn about how to call plays, when to call specific ones, etc., and then when Wink moves on, the position is Clink's and his alone.

Let's say Wink is the DC next year. I can't imagine, given how long he's been out of the college game, that he envisions this as much more than a one year stopover, two tops, before trying to get back to the league.

Moore wants to pull someone in who has experience in calling plays.

Moore spent two seasons as Co-Offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022 before being elevated to OC for the 2023 season.

Clinkscale was Co-DC for two seasons in 2022 and 2023. If Moore was using his own career as a template, he could have tabbed Clinkscale as DC in the same manner that he was made OC in '23.

Whatever—the important thing is that Clink is staying.

But in both those cases, Harbaugh was the head coach and (presumably) had final say.  SM may not want a first-time play caller on that side of the ball with an first-year head coach, who knows he's going to have to pay more attention to the offense that is losing 10/11 starters including the top 6 OL, the unit which more than any other drove the offense's success.

Thank God somebody actually cares about continuing what was so difficult to build along with not leaving young men out in the cold that you recruited.
