CC: Are we still hype on Dusty May?

Submitted by JamesBondHerpesMeds on March 23rd, 2024 at 8:47 AM

A first round exit to a once-in-a-generation (e.g. pretty decent!) Northwestern team is a little troubling. But May’s track record over the past few seasons, IMO, should still warrant him being one of our primo candidates.

I didn’t have a chance to watch the game, but are there any takeaways that give you pause about his candidacy? Discuss.

Northwestern had 7 seasons over 500 in the 30 years before Collins was hired and no tourney bids. He's had 4 winning seasons, which were all the winningest seasons in the past 40 years of Northwestern basketball, and made the tourney 4 times, in a decade of coaching.

He has two things going against him: 1. He went down on all fours and looked like an idiot in one game against Michigan, that picture is posted every year on this blog when Michigan plays NU. 2. He also chased a lot of guys off one year early in his tenure with some shady tactics that don't seem to have been repeated. He is likely often a jerk. But also a very solid coach who is probably gettable.

100%. Dusty May was an Ast at Florida before heading off to Florida Atlantic, he knows what goes into running a big time program. he's has a 70% winning %.

He had some hard times! But the Dream, baby, the Dream is bad and he knows he bad! And when the American dream gets that bull rope in the ring, you know he’s gonna do the thing and win back his title!

I still believe he is a great candidate, and the best option for Michigan.  He has done a lot with less resources, while at Michigan he could do more because there are more resources.  The only obstacle I can see him having at Michigan is NIL.  I am definitely no expert, but if Warde can take his hard-hat off his head and play in the same field of NIL as others, or even play close enough to them, then I believe Dusty May would be very, very successful at Michigan.

That James Madison team sure seemed to be well coached last night..... they played great at both ends of the floor

I don't know anything about their coach, but I want a Michigan team that plays the way they did last night.  I suspect they are going deep into the tourney.  Wouldn't be surprised to see them beat Duke.

I'd at least look at Mark Byington

I’m not really hype on anyone anymore given that we would all be super hype on Juwan still if we had Shannon, Love, Dickinson, and everyone else he planned on having but for the admissions office.

Are you still on that kick? You recall that Howard had Dickinson and TWO first-round draft picks and barely made the NIT last year, right?

Do you honestly think those guys you listed would've played at the level they did this year if Howard had been coaching them and they were stewing in Michigan's crappy team culture? Just look at what happened to the guys who transferred in this year and the horrendous development of the other five stars Howard has gotten a hold of.  LOLOLOLOL!

I mean... Beilein once lost a 4-13 match to Ohio (YTO)

(in retrospect though we now know he was playing 5D chess and threw that game to a) get carus levert and b) lure Jon Groce to Illinois so he could tank that program for half a decade)

For what’s it worth, Louisville people I have spoken with seem to think he is a lock for them.

My only issue is he essentially runs the same offense as JuWan.  In this era of NIL and Transfers, I think we need a X and ‘O system first, that can win with less than great athletes.  That would tend to disqualify May.

I like your X and o system  idea but we have to get athletes at every position.  I want a coach who field a team consisting ranging in heights of 6 2 point guards to 6 11 power forwards, all able to shoot the three ball and play hard nose defense.  No more Big Ten slug fests

According to BlueByNinety he is off the table for Michigan and is headed to Louisville.  Once again Michigan is working on the slow pace.

I witnessed my favorite basketball team, coached by my favorite coach, lose to New Jersey Institute of Technology. didn’t change my opinion of the man one iota.
