This is essentially the same message that we've heard multiple times when JH  is considering the NFL... That his love and passion for Michigan is essentially boundless. That it's not about the money for him personally. That he just wants to be wanted and shown reciprocal love from Michigan.

So, I believe we're a little past due to get really creative with the love.  He wants to see exceptional, perhaps otherworldly vivid examples of how much the Michigan community adores him.

I want Jim back as much as anyone...but at this point doesn't it feel like dealing with one of those people who say "if you don't know, I'm not telling you"

What do I frickin DO to show you you are wanted? Tell me and I'll do it, dangit!

For starters don't paint "Fire Harbaugh" on his way to work after winning 10 games three of first years after one bad loss.

Clapping hard a few days after the team finishes the best three year stretch ever isn't exactly a bold move.

Harbaugh.isnt an idiot. He knows people will turn on you instantly. Clemson fans are complaining about Dabo. They could play football for the next 900 years and not have someone as successful as him. I am pretty sure he wants to get paid if Michigan tries to get rid of him again.

Guys, he knows he wanted and loved at Michigan. He felt it this year and, if the reports are true, the extension is more than enough. He loves Michigan

BUT

Two things can be true: he hired an NFL agent for the first time and he’s going to see how much he’s wanted in the league and by whom and under what circumstances. He’s been open about wanting a Lombardi trophy. If the right situation comes, he’s taking it. And I’m more than OK with it. He deserves it. He finished what he came here for and has the obvious heir apparent ready to step in.

I hope he gets what he wants

One possibility is this is nonsense and he's very intrigued by the NFL and the NFL could just simply win out as a preference.

But if that's not the case, and the NFL is just the fallback spot in case he feels unloved by Michigan, then the only thing that makes sense to me is this is about the clause regarding potential NCAA penalties.

And I don't know how you solve that.

If Michigan signs Harbaugh to some kind of ironclad contract, then the NCAA can come in and do whatever they want. Michigan could receive crippling penalties from the NCAA and be on the hook for $100 million for a coach who is not allowed to coach to boot. And I'm sure Harbaugh doesn't even want this scenario for himself or Michigan.

But at the same time, he does not want Michigan to just be able to buy him out at a discount if the NCAA basically demands it.

I'd say Michigan could always sue the NCAA but they (including Harbaugh) didn't even follow through with the Big Ten.

If it isn't about the money, then what does it mean to say "the rest is up to Michigan"?   What does Jim want from Michigan if he is happy with the money?

I hope to hell this gets done, and it absolutely should, but Michigan has a greater knack for stepping on rakes set right in front of them than Sideshow Bob.

Jim Harbaugh expresses a level of vulnerability (how much he loves everyone and family) that is unique among coaches and plays very well with college-aged players.  It is his authentic self in his 50s.  I think he knows he could not be himself in the same way if he were to return to the NFL.

When he got to Ann Arbor no one in the media thought he could last more than 4 years in any one place as his personality or ambition gets in the way.  He has been here 9 years because he loves this school and the opportunity to shape young players into upstanding Michigan men.

Furthermore, I think he loves the idea of raising his family in Ann Arbor, just the way he grew up in Ann Arbor but in a slightly larger house.

Harbaugh is staying.

What would REALLY suck about this is if Jim goes, nobody is going to want to come in here and take over a program that has the same bs NCAA crap hanging over its head. Sherrone would be under the same “clause” crap as Jim because the University would know he had to have known the same amount as Jim.

All the University would have to do to fix this is structure it to say he can’t be terminated for cause based on the current investigations. Both the Bigten and NCAA have found no evidence to believe Harbaugh knew about Stalions, so it’s really about cheeseburgers at this point.

How much does his brother earn at Baltimore?  Seems like that would be some kind of challenge for him if it's more than his M $$$.  Otherwise, perhaps it's some kind of measuring stick no matter the difference negative or positive.

There is discussion in another thread speculating/hinting at the notion that Harbaugh might be looking for a level of insulation from NCAA penalties that Michigan shouldn't be willing to give him.

It is entirely possible that the NCAA takes what most of us would believe to be an irrational stance on the Connor Stalions-related investigation, which could result in a long-term suspension and/or a lengthy show-cause for Harbaugh.  It would be unwise and irresponsible for Michigan to offer to pay a guy 12m/yr unconditionally while knowing the NCAA could eventually levy penalties that make it impossible for Harbaugh to actually coach football.

This is exactly why Michigan won't do it for Harbaugh. No coaches nor employees are infallible. This likely is out Warde's hands no matter how hard he tries.

Also, he can't force Harbaugh to come back to Michigan. If Harbaugh wants to go to the NFL, then there's not much he can't do.

Saying firing Warde is too simplistic considering none of them don't know what's happening behind the scene. From my understanding, Warde was the one who kept Harbaugh from getting fired in 2020 then why did anyone not know about it?

I think that is the crux of the matter and it is neither irrational or irresponsible to offer to pay him even if he is suspended in connection with the two existing issues. TX A & M paid what to fire their coach? Bama paying 12 million to Wash, to get DeBoer. If it came to that, IMO we have the money (and there are rumblings that Ross would ante up) to pay two different coaches in 2024.

Otherwise, Jim should not rationally take that risk himself- i.e Not get paid and have possibly given up his chance to get a different, desirable job.

both sides have to do what's in their best interest...and those interests might not align closely enough for a reasonable deal to get done between them.

We don't know how badly Harbaugh wants to stay at Michigan, and what dollar value (if any) he's attached to the risks of doing so insofar as potential NCAA penalties are concerned.

Just because other teams have made financially, um, 'questionable' decisions doesn't mean Michigan is wise to follow suit.  I said this in another thread, but I think the most generous offer Michigan should make would be a contract with a condition to pay him the balance of the current year's salary if the NCAA takes action that inhibits his ability to coach a full season/seasons. I.e. he'd get his full 12m for that year, but that would be the end of his coaching relationship at Michigan.

I would love to see Harbaugh decide he wants Michigan to be the last coaching job he has, but I understand that external factors beyond anyone's control now play a huge part in influencing whether any deal gets done to make such a thing happen.  It's disappointing, but it is what it is.

This has everything to do with Michigan (all levels) supporting Harbaugh against the NCAA and the college football financial system.  Harbaugh wants to share structural revenue (tv revenue, athletic department revenue, etc..) with the players.  The more he speaks out about sharing the more the NCAA and the Big Ten go after him publicly.  Behind the scenes, I believe the university administration, athletic Department brass, board of regents, tv networks, etc... are very hesitant (no way in hell) in committing to support his desire to share in the structured revenue. Michigan likes winning but not at the cost of sharing structural revenue.  I think the power structure in college football financial system are ok with NIL, pay to pay, etc... paying players with means outside of the existing financial structure.  They don't want their $$ portion shared.  It ok if a car dealer wants to write a 3 million dollar check, or an oil tycoon writing a check for a QB.  Allowing those type of financial transactions keeps the focus away from the big structural money.

I mean we all want him, right?

If the contract offer of 10 years $125 million is true, then how more can they say it?

Warde Has publicly stated he gets along with Harbaugh. Ono supports him. The fans, players, coaches, alumni. What else does the man need?

We could give him a statue? Name the weight room after Ben Herbert and acknowledge more assistants with more money? I don't know what else it is.

according to comments in one of the other threads on this topic, one of the hangups is language concerning the status of his job and salary based on potential future actions taken by the NCAA.  Michigan wants to protect itself, and Harbaugh wants to protect himself.  It's entirely possible that each side's definition of that concept makes a deal impossible to reach.

The worry about how rational (or not) the NCAA is going to be is the wrench in the gears here.

(imo, of course)

Jim is well loved at Michigan, he just became an all time legend, statue is coming. Jim also opened up more this season and more people found what a quality human being he is, should he stay and win another NC soon the town would change the name to Jim and Ann Arbor. The decision is his and reasons are his alone, but he is well loved in Ann Arbor.

What does that mean in terms of what action he wants to see? How could he not feel like the whole fan base wants him, or the school after they offered him that much money?
