Absolute media silence on Signgate since the suspension

Submitted by jimmyjoeharbaugh on November 15th, 2023 at 1:15 PM

Anyone noticed that the media has gone silent on Signgate since the suspension? Outside of a couple clickbaits about what Pete Finebaum and Lou Holtz think, there have been no leaks, no news on investigations, nothing on Ryan Day's PI firm or the Purdue transgressions, no other coaches whining about how wronged they were. No new leaks from our side either which is strange since I thought we were going scorched earth.

Cynically that makes me think that the other coaches and ADs got what they wanted from little tony and so they can move on.

I find the silence somewhat deafening, like somebody told everyone to shut up now that they got their pound of flesh. what do you think happened?

I mean, it's pretty clear they realized that there wasn't more fire there than the smoke they found and so suddenly nobody is digging into Stalions at CMU, whatever is going on with Weiss, etc. because Harbaugh is off their screens.  Come Friday my guess is they'll ramp back up.

And in the interim you do have some of the dumbest fuckers in the world on OSU message boards trying to throw every possible crime on the books at Weiss and Stalions in the hope it sticks.

"No new leaks from our side either which is strange since I thought we were going scorched earth."

I wasn't necessarily expecting a huge dump immediately this week, but I was expecting something. For as angry as everyone is reported to me, it makes me wonder how much we actually have that would be impactful to reveal.

I've assumed that the school and the conference are talking during this week between the TRO filing and the hearing, so perhaps there's some negotiations going on about unlike Petitti Michigan is acting like an adult and not trying to burn down all possible bridges.

I'm coming around to the idea that the two sides will agree that this weekend's game is the second and last suspension game for Harbaugh and that this is the end of all Big 10 punishments toward UM/Harbaugh going forward barring some truly insane thing coming out.  Maybe a fine or something but this would be it, and so in that case the TRO gets dropped and everyone acknowledges this was stupid and they'll await the NCAA's investigation in 2-3 years.

I don't think they got #1 on their wish list, Jim Harbaugh resigning or being fired, but having him suspended for the most important games of the year was probably a close #2.  Ahead of the reputational damage to the program, the bad press, and CS no longer employed.

On the bright side, I think Day's PR firm shot its shot.  If they had anything else to leak I think it would have been put out by now.

Thats been my take too. There probably isnt anything else because if there was Thamel or Dellinger or someone else would be gleefully tweeting it already. This PI investigated Stallions for months presumably and how many coaches have been quoted as being involved in it?...not a single one. If they had a name, it would be out there.

I don't know, I stopped into my little neighborhood bar and grill spot for lunch and some ESPN bloviator was pissing and moaning about Michigan playing the "victim card," it was muted so I couldn't hear what was being said, but that was the chyron.

I would like to know exactly how Michigan is doing that. Most people point to the alleged "whataboutism" of Michigan's accusations against Ohio State, Purdue, and Rutgers. Do you really think Michigan dug that up just since Signgate broke a month ago? I mean, it's possible, but my guess is they knew about it a while but were like, "Whatever, everyone does it," and then that changed when it became clear Day is behind Signgate. Wanna fuck us, fine, we're fucking you back.

The "victim card" complaint is because we're not taking our punishment like good little boys. We're supposed to be sufficiently ashamed that we were okay with suspending Harbaugh for a crime he didn't commit because Petitti asked us nicely, and then we were supposed to be okay with him being suspended anywhere from 3 games to indefinitely despite it violating the conference bylaws.

Its funny how everyone just expects us to roll over and take punishment despite there being no evidence Jim did anything wrong and there being no investigation yet. What other schools head coach gets suspended multiple games on the allegations on of their staffers broke NCAA rules? None. Its a joke. Zero percent chance this happens at almost any other school because no one is pretending to be outraged by the same thing happening at Kansas State (for example)

If you're mad that someone is playing the victim, that means you're actually just mad that you're losing the PR battle.  True villains cannot play the victim card because it would laughably fall apart.  The anti-Michigan folks are losing the public's interest, and the B1G's bungling of the suspension combined with Michigan still winning has severely dented the PR on the B1G side of things.  If Michigan gets the suspension overturned in court, the B1G is really gonna look bad and Petitti will start having some uncomfortable conversations.

This talking point from rival fans bugs me because they don't know why Michigan is using it as a defense. They've heard terms like "whataboutism" and have been told since they were children "just because someone else is doing something doesn't mean you should do it too." That's all well and good, but sometimes things that look similar on the outside aren't the same and shouldn't be treated the same way.

It's obvious that this finger-pointing from Michigan serves a greater purpose in their defense of what they've been accused of than simply calling out others. You would have to be pretty naive, stupid, and/or motivated not to understand that.

I’d hope the big ten and Michigan can negotiate not having Harbaugh suspended for osu. Say maybe we’ll drop the case on Friday, suspend him through the Maryland game and call it even. I truly hope they come to their senses

But the whole point of this clown show was/is to get Harbaugh suspended for the OSU game, so that Day and OSU will have a better chance of winning. Day knows he will probably lose to a Harbaugh-led Michigan and three losses in a row will put him on the hot seat. So he/OSU cooked up this intimidation scheme of the rookie Big Ten commissioner to make this happen.

Remember, the panel that decided on 3 games has/had OSU and PSU as members. I can't think of a more ridiculous set-up.

The only hot take I have left is if Michigan beats OSU this year, then OSU will put pressure on the Big Ten to exclude them from the Championship game, sending OSU in our place. If Michigan wins the conference championship, then pressure shifts to the CFP committee to exclude Michigan.

This was a masterful move by Ryan Day to remove himself from the Ohio State hot seat for years to come. Their fans will cry about Michigan cheating and use it as an excuse for why their hero Ryan Day loses to Michigan. If he indeed did hire that private investigation firm, he’s gotten a ton of value out of it already, regardless of whether Jim Harbaugh coaches this year against his team.

I have to imagine the BIG realizes they have a lot to lose without making a deal.  1 game reduction makes it seem like they won, although, I'm not even happy with that.  If this does happen, then we need a Jim and John watch party podcast where they discuss the game as they watch it together.  Maybe Jack would be in on it too.

Not sure they got what they wanted.  I think they really were hoping to chase Harbaugh to the NFL, and instead he's apparently close to signing an extension.

But I think the Big Ten - having gotten a decent amount of criticism for the way it handled things last Friday - may be feeling like it bit off more than it can chew and might finally have the resolve to tell OSU and the rest to pipe down.

I was just thinking it was odd that there hasn’t been anything from the “insiders” all week. Probably because there is nothing new at this point. We are just waiting until Friday. I was hoping that since the hearing is Friday Michigan and the Big Ten might negotiate a settlement. Unfortunately I don’t see that happening. It has gone too far for either side to back down now.

I will say harbaugh's "america's team" comment was a little cringeworthy, and paw finnebottom got his panties in a wad about it... shocker.  but that's what harbaugh is and does. you take it one, you take it all (twss).

I don't think there's much to say until Friday - if he is vindicated or at least there's a stay of execution, you'll hear whining about the last 2 reg season games.

I do think not having harbaugh against osu is a BIG deal. He has a mental edge over Day clearly and just having him there sucks the air out of the room for folks lookinga t our players/other coaches... and he embraces that role

Say the NCAA determines that Harbaugh is to be held accountable for some violations perpetrated by Stalions. Does this current suspension count toward "time served" or would they levy their own separate suspension? It would be absolutely absurd if they suspended him either in the postseason or to start next season.
