Fun fact: they needed to shoot reaction shots to that monologue. Nicholson thought it would work best if the other actors were responding to the actual monologue instead of “look stunned” so he did it repeatedly and exactly the same for 8 hours. Helluva actor.

Well imagine you’re walking down the street drinking you’re Frappuccino and some DBags pull up and unload several hails of paintballs that strike you and the people around you,  probably going to want said DBag’s arrested. I’m missing the part where playing college football is a right,  seems firmly in the privilege category of things.  Do something stupid that puts normal innocent people out and get arrest then it should be expected that you don’t get to play football on Saturday.

Had something similar happen.  Was riding my bike home from work and got sprayed in full auto fashion by a passing car.  Then a couple of miles ahead, there was a crash, cops blocked all lanes, and traffic was at a standstill.

I caught up to the little bastards, I was getting ready to pull the driver out of the car and beat the shit out of the him and a cop noticed what was going on, came over, heard my story, and arrested them all.

Details of the actual incident aside, I can think of plenty of hypotheticals.  It’s not a lethal weapon, but some models can resemble real firearms, and in any case you can fire only at consenting people wearing safety equipment. So brandishing, aiming, or firing a paintball gun at anyone unsuspecting could result in charges even if the toy itself isn’t regulated.

IANAL but the way my understanding of violent crime laws work, it’s illegal to threaten someone with a friggin’ chocolate bar if you make it so they don’t know you’re unarmed (such as pressing it into the back of a stranger). Specific to paintballs, firing them at moving vehicles can obstruct the drivers’ sight and/or cause them to panic.

A paintball to the eye can easily blind you. Depending on a gun's particular velocity a paintball to the nads can cause permanent damage besides being horribly painful.  Anywhere else can leave deep bruises and welts. So yeah, if they were shooting at folks, arrest them and charge them.

There was a pretty sad story recently. A 12ish year old kid decided it would be funny to put on a ski mask and do a paintball "drive-by" at an outdoor gathering at another home. His dad, unfathomably, agreed and they put on their masks and performed the paintball gun drive-by. A person at the gathering had was legally carrying a firearm, and confused the scene as real gunfire and returned fire, hitting and killing the child.

Edit: I was wrong on the details. The boy was 10 and was not killed, but shot and hospitalized.

Not insinuating that the Rutgers players did anything similar, but here's an example of paintball gun incident that would, at minimum, likely result in misdemeanor assault charges.

I'm sorry, when you mentioned bonjovi nights DBs, you needed to be more specific...

...Oh. Sorry. Of course you meant Defensive Backs.

My mistake.

Unless they were using the paintball gun as a blunt object and hitting people with it,  I hope these guys are back and playing Saturday. They joined a big ten team to be able to play Michigan.

This is kind of a weird take.

What if they were using the paintball gun to hold up a liquor store?  Or rob people on the street?  That seems pretty awful.

Maybe they were just vandalizing. But what if they were vandalizing a church? Or a church lady?

The whole point of the matter is that we don't know the details. Yes, of course they came to play football. But you have to assume that Schiano wants them to play football too, and that he's not just handing down arbitrary suspensions going into a pretty big conference game.

I don't hope they play on Saturday. I don't hope they don't play on Saturday. Honestly, I don't remember either of these guys. I hope that Schiano does the right thing and if they messed up, they learn from their mistake based on a just punishment given.
