Reports: Jim Harbaugh Suspended Three Games By Michigan Athletics
Breaking news this afternoon, via the insiders:
JUST IN: We are told that Jim Harbaugh has informed those inside Schembechler Hall that #Michigan is self-imposing a three-game suspension for Harbaugh effectively immediately https://t.co/pAjCvE0jbq
— Josh Henschke (@JoshHenschke) August 21, 2023
Henschke was the first to leak it publicly, but it has been corroborated by other insiders ($) on the various paid sites. No official word yet from the team or the university, but it appears that Harbaugh will miss the three non-conference games at the athletic department's directive. The internal logic seems to be that this is a move intended to take away leverage from the NCAA, limiting their ability to suspend Harbaugh as a result of the investigation. More importantly, this is a seeming attempt to prevent this saga from affecting the 2024 season. More when official details are released.
There is no content after the jump.

I’m a little shocked but I do think getting out in front of this was a good move by the department. Surprised to say it but credit to Warde I guess?
August 21st, 2023 at 2:03 PM ^
If this is getting out in front of it yikes.
Id hate to see falling behind.
1 day story turned into a 3 month saga where our solution is to go under the suspension they rejected.
Fucking brilliant!
August 21st, 2023 at 3:11 PM ^
The university can only control what it can control. I think that their narrative is excellent: "we tried doing things your way, and you rejected it. Now we'll do it our way."
August 21st, 2023 at 2:12 PM ^
A few months ago St Johns announced they hired Rick fucking Pitino as their head coach, and we are suspending ours.
August 22nd, 2023 at 1:06 AM ^
To be fair, Rick Pitino is a multiple national championship winning coach.

Free cheeseburgers at the stadium during those games. Let's make it happen.
August 21st, 2023 at 1:37 PM ^
Man, no one self-flagellates harder than Michigan Athletic Dep't.
August 21st, 2023 at 1:55 PM ^
better than no one self-flatulates harder

BBBBBOOOOOOOO!!!!!

-UUUUUUURRRRNS!
August 21st, 2023 at 1:40 PM ^
I’m good with this. Would rather self impose a suspension for a few cupcakes then move on than leave this up to a dying entity hungry to prove their power who won’t let this go. If the NCAA want to pursue this further beyond the 3 games, then they’re literally going to commit PR suicide
August 21st, 2023 at 7:59 PM ^
What is PR suicide? The NCAA already has a bad reputation. Are you going to stop going to football games or not watch anymore? Are the fans of other schools going to stop going to their games because of how MI got mistreated by the NCAA? The Big Ten has a $7 billion tv deal and nothing is going to slow that down.
August 21st, 2023 at 1:43 PM ^
A shameful admission of guilt. I would have fought NCAA to the bitter end. If I was Harbaugh, I would resign immediately and blame spineless Warde for ruining Michigan football. Never admit guilt. Conservative old timers will love this and do the mental gymnastics required to make this seem like a good move. It's not. Warde Manual loves compliance and being a good subservient little AD more than he loves Michigan Football.
August 21st, 2023 at 2:38 PM ^
This is just as much an admission of guilt as settling in court is. Sometimes it’s better just to cut your losses and move on
August 21st, 2023 at 2:47 PM ^
"spineless" Warde might soon be the AD while we win the national championship not to mention, a record number of BIG titles across all sports. Have we should change the adjective's meaning.
August 21st, 2023 at 3:16 PM ^
Michigan was guilty: two of the three L2 violations were self-reported. Nothing shameful about conceding that you made a mistake and broke the rules, taking your medicine, and moving on.
August 21st, 2023 at 4:00 PM ^
But the suspension is not for the Level II violations. Level II violations are like speeding tickets. The reason for this suspension has everything to do with what happened between the NCAA investigators and Harbaugh and the coaching staff. The suspension is an indicator that we are accepting the Level I violation.
August 21st, 2023 at 3:58 PM ^
There was already completed negotiations on a suspension for 4 games. Do you honestly believe Michigan was going to be able to reduce that down to zero? It's best for the university and the program to try to get as much of this nonsense out of the way now and have better footing to fight the NCAA when they come calling to try to mete out their sentence.
August 21st, 2023 at 5:19 PM ^
This was not Warde's decision in a vacuum. WTF are you talking about?
Harbaugh signed off on this.
August 21st, 2023 at 1:43 PM ^
Dumb. I’m heavy on principal, and I feel like my personality is similar to Harbaugh’s in that respect. I can’t imagine what he’s thinking right now.
To me it shows a certain level of admitting guilt, which cuts JH’s legs out from under him. I hate this with the fire of 1000 suns.
August 21st, 2023 at 1:56 PM ^
Skinner and Belding need to lose weight?
August 21st, 2023 at 2:42 PM ^
I don’t think this is admitting guilt. It’s cutting our losses and moving on from something that the NCAA wasn’t going to let go and was going to let linger for a year plus
August 21st, 2023 at 3:18 PM ^
It's admitting the guilt Michigan already admitted. The suspension being shorter than what Michigan was willing to accept on the L1 "violation" means that Michigan is saying they don't believe the L1 violation occurred.
August 21st, 2023 at 1:48 PM ^
Hopefully once this is over we can be done with it once and for all. From that standpoint, I get it but it sucks that we aren't sticking up for our guy
August 21st, 2023 at 1:52 PM ^
Pragmatic me: I love this move. Completely takes the momentum away from the NCAA pitchfork crew.
Idealist me: I hate this move. Acknowledges the relevance and existence of the NCAA.
Best possible outcome: now try and take away our national championship.
August 21st, 2023 at 1:53 PM ^
The MGoStore should sell a t-shirt that just says, "There is no content after the jump."
August 21st, 2023 at 1:57 PM ^
but that could backfire if the jump button were right above your waistline
August 21st, 2023 at 1:54 PM ^
This is a hard one for me to digest. 3 games? I don't think the infraction meats that kind of punishment. I bet the Harbaugh haters are going to relish this one. It all seems cheesy to me. I bet the press is going to make a big dill about this. For me, I just can't mustard up the anger...
August 21st, 2023 at 2:46 PM ^
I agree, this is overdone
August 21st, 2023 at 1:56 PM ^
Haven't been following all the arcane legal maneuvering behind all this, but my immediate take is that we effectively mitigated a bad situation but probably could've just avoided in the first place altogether if we had told the NCAA to go fork themselves in their sphincters with a rusty shiv - am I super off-base here?
August 21st, 2023 at 1:56 PM ^
It is hard for me to believe that Jim Harbaugh is for this decision. You have to wonder if this is a decision by Warde trying to limit any damage or negative recruiting in the future but ultimately going against the wishes of Harbaugh which I would assume is to tell the NCAA to go screw themselves. The fact that there has been no finalized contract with Harbaugh (at least publicly known) puts Michigan in the same predicament we have been in for 3 years now. I have to imagine Harbaugh has told Warde either this is his last year or he still wants to feel out the NFL next year. This is all complete speculation and assumptions by someone who has no clue what is going on behind the scenes. Go Blue!
August 21st, 2023 at 3:57 PM ^
So you're saying Harbaugh told Warde he may move or is moving on and the response was to take him out of three games for potentially his final year?
August 21st, 2023 at 2:03 PM ^
In some ways this may also serve as a trial for potential next head coaches for us, or for someone else. We may never know but the way the program is run by the potential interims will provide a lot of info to those in the program about who may be the next man up should Harbaugh leave.
Edit: It's obvious of course. But I meant to add that the AD may view this is a benefit THIS YEAR as well. So serves many purposes.
August 21st, 2023 at 2:04 PM ^
While I don't like giving in at all and 3 games seems like too much, it does seems like a good practical solution. IIRC, the NCAA voided the negotiated 4-game suspension. So Michigan comes back and self-imposes 3 games (less then what was negotiated so still taking a dig at the NCAA but still "severe" enough for the NCAA not to take further action upon review). And let's face it - 3 games that don't really mean much. It seems like a smart, if conservative, decision.
August 21st, 2023 at 2:07 PM ^
I'm just not convinced that this does anything. The ncaa wants blood and I just don't think this calms them down. My guess is a post season ban is coming next year.
August 21st, 2023 at 2:21 PM ^
If the NCAA wants more, I sincerely hope Michigan tells them to fuck off and takes them to court.
August 21st, 2023 at 4:46 PM ^
Um...we could have done that now...before giving ourselves a self-imposed punishment.
August 21st, 2023 at 8:09 PM ^
I don't think a post season ban will be it. I think the NCAA wants to suspend Harbaugh for the whole 2024 season and put a 5 year show cause on him. Harbaugh may see this coming and not return next year. Give me the 3 games now and one of the assistant coaches like Moore can take over in 2024.
August 21st, 2023 at 2:09 PM ^
I assume this was the NCAA's goal all along, and they'll undoubtedly tack on some more bullshit in 2024 but it'll be along the lines of recruiting blackouts or similarly non-game related.
This is such a stupid saga and I'm a bit annoyed UM is even validating it with a suspension. For perspective, NW thought a couple games suspension for Pat Fitzgerald was appropriate before all the abuses came to light. So Harbaugh and UM agreeing to miss a little under a fifth of the season because he told an NCAA investigator (who was tipped off by a disgruntled former employee who himself got shitcanned at another stop for being an asshole) to pound sand over a hamburger seems a bit ridiculous.
August 21st, 2023 at 2:11 PM ^
This seems to foreclose a defense from Harbuagh that he did not make false statements to the NCAA, but also does not foreclose further punishment from the NCAA. I'm hoping we learn something more that makes this seem better.
August 21st, 2023 at 3:24 PM ^
It doesn't foreclose any defense. Three conceded L2 violations, three games, done.
August 21st, 2023 at 2:14 PM ^
If they'd done something lesser (1-2 games) and done it earlier, than we might crow about how Warde is out in front of something. This ain't that. Be decisive one way or the other -- give a cursory punishment right away or tell the NCAA that they can take the cursory punishment or pound sand. Warde let this go on too long for my liking.
August 21st, 2023 at 2:16 PM ^
Smart move. Three easy games and make it go away.
But we should all complain how awful it is so the infants at the NCAA can puff up their chests.
August 21st, 2023 at 2:16 PM ^
Yeah. The NCAA's gonna NCAA (pronounced "nick-ah" or "nack-ah" or "stupid!") so Michigan's move seems a reasonable response.
August 23rd, 2023 at 12:48 AM ^
What?
August 21st, 2023 at 2:17 PM ^
I doubt Harbaugh signed off on this.
Fire Warde. Fight this. Pay Jim the highest amount among NCAA coaches.
August 21st, 2023 at 2:21 PM ^
My guess would be Harbaugh did sign off in this.
Warde is not that foolish and no way is Ono that foolish.
August 21st, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
I'm gonna say I actually do think Warde is that foolish, but you're right that Ono probably signed off on this plan so hopefully it ends up making some sense
August 21st, 2023 at 2:30 PM ^
Given Warde's history, there's almost no way he did this unilaterally. That's just not how he operates.
Jim probably just said "Let's put this bullshit to bed already."
August 21st, 2023 at 2:18 PM ^
Bullshit. Fire Warde.
