Monsieur Koumba [On3]

Aymeric Koumba Has Committed to Michigan Comment Count

The Michigan Wolverines have added another piece to their 2023 recruiting class as a busy July rolls along, and for the third straight time, it's an edge! Today it's French prospect Aymeric Koumba

Not much is known about Koumba at this time, given that he lives and trains in France, but since DL coach Mike Elston discovered Koumba recently, the Wolverines were pushing hard. Elston saw Koumba at a camp in June and then pressed to get Koumba in the class before anyone else could find out about him. As you may guess, Koumba does not have a recruiting ranking right now given his residence overseas, but we do know about his good size, gargantuan wingspan, and rumors of plus-athleticism. One week after adding Collins Acheampong to the class, Elston has nabbed another high upside international edge, furthering his goal of recruiting an army of pterodactyls to play the edge position.

There is no content after the jump.

Honestly the fact that this guy is unranked and completely under-the-radar almost gives me more faith in his talent, since it's not like Elston has struggled either here or at ND to pick up guys with strong rankings

If we didn't have a murder rate orders of magnitude higher than any other developed country I would wholeheartedly agree with you but fact is it's an ongoing crisis.  Yes, 99% of us can, like the rest of humanity, easily separate nicknames and violence but . . .

No I think we can actually. Gun references are an entirely separate thing than instances of violence. Nobody is suggesting brandishing a gun, using a gun, or committing an act of violence. It’s a freakin nickname that is the name of a type of gun.

Just because some jagoffs decide to commit acts of violence doesn’t make the name of a gun taboo.

Yooo....it's not that serious. Relax. Call him what you want.

I literally said, I'd prefer we not.

Since when is that some declaration or bold statement? You can very easily "prefer that we do." That's okay. No one is stopping you if that's YOUR preference.

Y'all tread on my rights folks are always on edge, dear lord. No one was saying half that stuff you're talking about, lol.

You may prefer that we never wear all-maize uniforms again...me? I don't really care as long as we don't make a habit of it.

You may prefer JJ McCarthy over Cade McNamara...sweet.

This wasn't a debate, nor a mandate...it was me sharing a preference. If you want to call him AK-47 or French Fry...I don't care, I'd prefer we call him neither of those things.

The glorification of these types of weapons that are used in mass shootings by people that usually turn out to be disturbingly obssessed with these types of weapons may have a small part to play in those obsessions (which are pretty uniquely American).  So seems like it might be helpful to not glorify such weapons.

It's a school football team and you're complaining people don't want to nickname a player after a type of gun?  Someone has very obviously not been impacted by school shootings.  How nice for you.

At the very least maybe you could try to be sensitive about the optics of this and not be the guy who insists we name players after weapons?

Yeah, if I were him I'd prefer not to be tagged with the name of a notorious weapon of mass murder myself--or hell, anything connected in the popular mind to this country's little problem with school and other shooting massacres (300 mass shootings to date this year, by one count).

But that's just me, and I'd hate to muss the beauty home permanent of any sensitive plant whom that might offend. Chacun a son gout/preference.
