not a bad idea to go through the process and get some feedback. if he stays in he's slightly nuts.

he'll be back

He'd be stupid not to do this. As long as he doesn't sign with an agent, he gets feedback from the NBA on his draft stock and what he needs to improve.

When I first saw this I freaked out a little but I imagine you have to declare to take part in these programs right? I hope he's just getting what he can out of it and really has no intention of going in early.

He will go the Wagner route. Figure out what he needs to do for next year. Nothing to worry about.

In my opinion he should come back and improve his handles and shooting. Next year will be his year. No matter what hope all works out for him.

How this process works?

Come back, let coach B tinker with your jumper and be a first round pick.
Rinse & repeat for the last 5 years.

The timing makes sense. If he's an NBA player, it's more than likely this year or next for him. And, as everyone has stated, while he has NBA potential, it doesn't appear high enough to draft now and his skill level also doesn't seem to be high enough to draft this year either. So that basically leaves next year, and the older he gets the more the window closes. He gets one free enter and return. So he might as well use it to get a chance to work on his game and get more feedback on his game.
Being 21 already doesn't give him much room for an NBA dream. He can likely go the Euro route, but the NBA window is very limited, particularly for a guy that almost certainly won't be a lottery pick.
The NCAA does not restrict how many times a player can go that route. The rule was changed two years ago, despite what you might read on the front page here.
Youi gave very valid reasons why it makes sense for Matthews, but why would any player with legitimate NBA ambitions turn down the chance to work out for teams and get feedback? He's talented enough that teams will at least give him a look.
What would happen if a player declared 3 times and withdrew every time? It looks to me like the NCAA would allow him to return to school. What would the NBA do about it? They could draft him, of course. But what if they didn't and a year later he looks worthy of a first round pick? Whatever the NBA did, it's hard to see how the player ends up worse off if he didn't like his draft grade.
Obviously this hasn't been tested yet, as the rule change was only made two years ago. Also, the NBA rule was written before then, so it wasn't done with college players in mind. They are discussing changing eligibility rules and that's something they may address.
I think I dated her too.

Right decision for him to test but sentiment seems to be he is likely coming back.

His shortcomings that prevent him from being an NBA player seem pretty obvious (shooting, ball-handling), but perhaps hearing that from the NBA will help him develop the skills next season so that he may be ready. I am looking forward to seeing him reach more of his potential next year.

Yup, he's doing this to find out what exactly he needs to work on (ball handling, passing, shooting) and he'll use the next season to show how much he's improved.
Fortunately one of the best offensive minds and player developers is his coach.

You know that Warren never played a down in the NFL and that Morris played in the NBA for parts of four separate seasons and has career earnings north of $3M, right? They don't belong in the same sentence.

he comes back, great. If he is told he will get drafted now and goes, the Beilein NBA pipeline continues. Our basketball program is in great shape either way.

seems like everyone is being positive about
I think he will be back. If he develops a consistent 3 point shot, he will be deadly next year for us.
Very smart choice. Why not at least get some feedback from the league on where your game needs to improve?
I'd guess he'll be back but this way he knows exactly what he needs to improve on next season so he can get himself drafted this time next year. He really started to come along during the postseason, so if he can keep that momentum going into next season he can definitely play his way into the first round. This can be his team next year if he keeps making progressions.
He should be back, barring a first round grade with some winks from a handful of teams at the end of the round. And if that's the case, it's a solid one to argue for leaving - guaranteed contract and typically a stable franchise is picking in the 20s.
He can go in without an agent and withdraw twice. The rule has changed.
He would be crazy not to do this! Get some feedback, etc etc. but he'll be back. (everyone in this thread will say feining confidence, but nervously be hoping they are correct)
announce, have people tell you to do some stuff better, come back to Michigan and do that stuff better, profit!
