Wings Beat the Avs in OT - Kaner with the Game Winner!
The Avs still look great, very fast, even their D are fast. But the Wings hung tough, Lyon kept them in it when the Avs were buzzing and somehow the Wings just keep scrapping out these victories.
Long way to go, this was the first game of the last third of the season. The Wings now own the 1st Wild Card spot so if they can stay healthy, we have an excellent shot to make the playoffs. This was our first win over the Avs since 2017.
OT (started with a short RW power play):

TB and NJ also lost. Wings now in 7th, one point up from TB, with 2 games in hand. great night!
also, fuck the Avs. I still want to punch that dirty SOB turtle lemieux in the face

Redwings vs avs was the greatest NHL rivalry ever. Shoving it up roy's ass that last playoff game was stupendous!!

oh don't worry, Darren McCarty already did.

Lemieux is Seider's agent, which I find objectively hilarious. To be a fly on the wall during those negotiations.

This Red Wings fan will ALWAYS hate the Colorado Avalanche!
February 22nd, 2024 at 10:47 PM ^
Ditto for me 👍
February 22nd, 2024 at 11:50 PM ^
Yeah, I've had to temper my hatred a little bit. After playing for West Point for 4 years my middle son was stationed in Colorado Springs. They must have got to him. For someone who played at a pretty high level (my son, not me) he appreciates the speed with which they play. Mackinnon and Makar are elite and they've got depth. When he was out there they were winning a Cup and the Wings sucked ass.
He likes the Wings too, which is weird. Datsyuk was his favorite. And now he has my first grandchild so I have to be civil.
But now the Wings are like Michigan Football and even the Lions! From sucking ass to excellence. I don't remember Detroit having this many teams so competitive. Full props to Stevie Y and Newsie, Coach Jim, and MCDC. LGRW!

Huge. Didn’t look like it was going to be our night in the 2nd. So many chances and 0 goals. Kept grindin.
February 23rd, 2024 at 10:49 AM ^
Yeah, but you knew they were going to be a little flat in the first coming off a 4 game west coast road trip. It was nice to see them pick it up in the second and with the chances they were creating something was bound to go in eventually and thankfully it did!

Kane was a hell of a pickup
February 22nd, 2024 at 11:45 PM ^
it was a win/win really. I am shocked we ended up with him, but also really pleased.
that setup by larkin was unreal.
February 23rd, 2024 at 12:30 AM ^
Larkins pass was next level! Was an easy finish for Kaner. The offense overall is so multiple this year - we might have the most 10+ goal scorers in the league right now.
Really has been a clinic by Bougner coaching the PK, what a difference he made coming over from the Avs.
February 23rd, 2024 at 10:50 AM ^
Yeah, that no look back pass was sick.
February 23rd, 2024 at 11:27 AM ^
we might have the most 10+ goal scorers in the league right now.
They do.
February 23rd, 2024 at 10:53 AM ^
It was risky considering no one has come back from that before. Thankfully Kane picked us a one of the teams he was considering because of the DeBrincat pickup and the surgery was a complete success.

Lyon is red hot. If he can keep it going, the Wings can cause some trouble in the playoffs.
Cossa is red hot in GR, too. Prospects are looking pretty damn good.
February 23rd, 2024 at 10:57 AM ^
I think they said on the broadcast last night that Cossa was only the third rookie goalie to post a shutout in GR in the last 9 seasons. I like the sound of that!

Poor Al got shown the door for peeing in some place under LC Arena. Apparently he reached out to Chris and wasn't even given a text or call back. Chris is no Mike.

I watch this every March 26th. This video is the best and definitely gets the blood pumping. And if you remember the hit on Draper the outrage was real and the vengeance was cold blooded in this team.

I prefer to call the team from Colorado the 'Lanche.
February 23rd, 2024 at 5:47 AM ^
I saw none of it except for the OT. The wings played excellent. Lyons made a big two on zero breakaway save. Mickey said that if the wings win this game they’re going to the playoffs. They also said that the wings now have 17 come from behind third period wins, the most in the NHL. That shows some character and some grit.
LGRW!

Character and grit...
Sounds like a certain Center I remember watching for dozens of years. Happy to hear that he's building the team in his image.
February 23rd, 2024 at 6:30 AM ^
You know I didn't think of it until you mentioned it. The Wings do have a lot of grit. We don't have the McDavid's or the Mackinnons or the Makars but it's a solid group that works hard.
Vegas was built the same way for their Cup run. They had some good and great players but probably not what you'd call elite. But they were deep and solid up and down the lineup.
February 23rd, 2024 at 6:34 AM ^
As we all know, unfortunately, because we’re usually on the wrong side of this, a hot goaltender can take you a long ways…
Wings are looking solid, maybe not super flashy, but they’re Stevie-Y’s team, don’t count them out.
February 23rd, 2024 at 11:02 AM ^
With all the crappy luck they had with draft position it looks like this may be the way they have to go since missing out on the top prospects for the last several years. It's clearly a model that can work and even Seattle has had some success with it.
February 23rd, 2024 at 6:54 AM ^
I'm back on the bandwagon for the first time in years even though I don't get Bally sports at home. Can't wait to watch the Blues game on Saturday. LGRW.
February 23rd, 2024 at 7:28 AM ^
For what it’s worth, we don’t get Bally, either. Somehow ESPN randomly will make the games available on Hulu. They’re listed as some kind of pay-per-view, but once in a while, the game just show up. 🤷.
February 23rd, 2024 at 8:55 AM ^
ESPN+ shows all the NHL games. Got it as part of the Hulu/Disney bundle. Worth it.
February 23rd, 2024 at 9:21 AM ^
*Out of market games. If you're in the Red Wings' home territory, the games on ESPN+ should be blacked out. But great for watching anything out of your own home market.
February 23rd, 2024 at 12:04 PM ^
I bit the bullet and signed up for Bally Sports because I had a feeling the Wings were gonna contend for a playoff spot this year. Plus I have ESPN+ as part of the Verizon Disney package. So no matter what I get to see the games.
However going forward it looks like the games will be streamed on Prime as part of Amazon's bailout of DSG starting in 2025. Since I'm already a Prime subscriber it looks like I won't have to pay extra in 2025.

ALMOST all the NHL games but definitely worth the 5 or 6 bucks a month to get the bundle. I watch all the Wings games and will flip on an interesting game for the background while I catch up on news and emails. Emphasis on "interesting" so virtually never Carolina (yaaaaawn).
February 23rd, 2024 at 10:27 AM ^
you might've missed the starlink post on sunday, but we just got enough TV reception to even see a 'puck'. prior to starlink going live sunday night a 'puck' was an abstract concept, not usually visible on our TV, or at best a fuzzy thing moving between fuzzy/stick figure people who looked like they were gliding around somehow. i may now take more of an interest in hockey for the first time in 20+ yrs, since we can now watch a game.
February 23rd, 2024 at 12:58 PM ^
I wait tables on weekends and my restaurant has been getting some hockey games lately as well. Saw the OT win over Seattle the other day there. Very fun seeing my team playing in VA as I rarely get to watch the Wings anymore.
February 23rd, 2024 at 7:19 AM ^
That assist pass by Larkin was beautiful.
February 23rd, 2024 at 9:21 AM ^
This feels like the reverse of that game last year when the Wings were holding onto a wild card spot and Tampa Bay came to town and shut them out. That loss was the catalyst for trading away Bertuzzi and another cycle of being hockey's have-nots.
There's still a lot to finish, but they look like they're going back to the playoffs finally.
February 23rd, 2024 at 9:26 AM ^
Agree. Last year's team played hard but seemed to be held together with duct tape and twine at times. This year's team is more legit and we still have some heavy hitters in GR, SHL and juniors who will likely make solid to excellent NHLers.
February 23rd, 2024 at 11:30 AM ^
This is a solid comment....last year, that TB shutout was deflating. But this year, this victory -- in a game not many folks gave them a good shot to win -- might be the confidence builder this team needs to propel them higher.
Assuming the goaltending holds, this is a playoff team, and one that might make some noise in the playoffs, too. Even the fourth line battles and battles, and that's huge in the playoffs.
Oh, and I'm POSBANGING everyone. It was a great game to watch last night and a great victory.
February 23rd, 2024 at 11:35 AM ^
Think it was the back to back losses to Ottawa that did it; especially when Tkachuk imposed his will on our entire team, who showed little backbone.
Speaking of rivalries - that is turning into a good one.
