When the crowd wills the team to win vs Alabama / other examples?
There was a fun thread on Twitter the other day about the impromptu 'Lets Go Blue' chant that broke out after Alabama played Dixieland Delight. Obviously Zinter mentioned it, but it was cool to see everyone's perspective in that thread all collectively say - "I saw it. I felt it. I knew it."
The thread - https://twitter.com/i/bookmarks/1754189383060586930?post_id=1753460151783211126
That game and that moment is something I will remember for the rest of my life. It was a collective 'No more. After the last 25 years we've gone through, we're not letting this go. We will will this win into existence." And we did.
There was one other time I can recall where I saw something similar.

The 'Let's Go Wings' chant at 1m12s.
I was there too - I was 16 at the time. I had never in my life heard a crowd chant that loud, ever. The 'Let's Go Wings' chant started in the pre-game, before the game. I am convinced that Roy and the Avalanche knew, deep down, that this game was over before it even started. After it was 1-0, it was all over.
What other times have you seen the crowd will a team to victory?

God I miss Joe Louis arena. It was kind of a dump, but it was our dump. And man did it get loud.
Here is the YouTube link for that moment in the Wings pre-game - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csbhEIMQUzU&t=72s

If you think that was a dump, you should have seen Olympia.

When did it change from Let’s Go Wings to Let’s Go Red Wings (LGRW)?
February 5th, 2024 at 9:50 AM ^
There's been times that LCA has gotten loud recently that rivalled the Joe. I'm sure a good Playoff run soon, it'll be deafening / far better than it was at the Joe.

"LET'S GO ZAK" in this year's OSU game. Watch Klatt's blog segment about it. He tears up talking about what he observed during the commercial break. I was at that game and it was powerful.
February 4th, 2024 at 4:24 PM ^
This.
Such a great story.
February 4th, 2024 at 4:35 PM ^
And Blake and the "65" after. That tells you all that is needed to know about Team 144. Magical.
February 4th, 2024 at 5:35 PM ^
The only bad thing about being at the game for it was that I didn't learn about Blake flashing 65 at the camera until the next day.
February 4th, 2024 at 5:44 PM ^
Exactly. And to have the presence of mind to do that tells me how engaged they were.
February 4th, 2024 at 4:26 PM ^
Wasn't at the game for that one, but yeah - could feel that through the TV.
Felt terrible for Zak but again - the crowd took what happened and helped the team will the win into existence.
February 4th, 2024 at 6:48 PM ^
As much as I don't care for what college football is turning into with NIL and the transfer portal, its moments like that which make you remember why you fell in love with the sport to begin with.
February 4th, 2024 at 8:38 PM ^
I was there too. It was special in a different (unfortunate at the time) way.
The next play.. TD by Blake, flashing 65 - a team effort.
And, of course, hoping Zak’s recovery is complete. Some NFL team will be very happy with him.

Not Michigan football, but Miracle on Ice comes to mind.

Agreed that part of the reason we chanted "Let's Go Blue" over Dixieland Delight was about willing the win into existence. But it was also about that song absolutely SUCKING and never ending; we just didn't want to hear that sh*tty, interminable song any more!
February 4th, 2024 at 6:00 PM ^
How/why do they play that song? It’s about the State of Tennessee. Makes no sense.
February 4th, 2024 at 7:18 PM ^
Because it’s sung by the group Alabama. Kind of how THE is owned by OSU lol. Derangement syndrome. And I agree that the song never made any sense.
February 5th, 2024 at 7:59 AM ^
Ugh. And I can never listen to Hang On Sloopy anymore either. Fuck Ohio.
February 4th, 2024 at 7:45 PM ^
That songs not about the state of Tennessee, it's about hooking up with a southern girl and somehow ended up an anthem for southern pride. Tennessee is only referenced due to Nashville being the country music capital.
February 5th, 2024 at 7:17 AM ^
Hmm, I count four references to Tennessee in this song and they're not about Nashville, but the "backwoods."
February 5th, 2024 at 10:51 AM ^
There's probably some Alabama board asking the same thing about why they played Mr. Brightside for us at the previous commercial break :)
February 4th, 2024 at 8:42 PM ^
My kids, current Michigan students - were at the Rose Bowl - and that song was seemingly never ending. A limited repertoire from the Tide. SO glad “Let’s Go Blue” began to shut it down.. and, coming back to win.. The Coup de Grace.
February 5th, 2024 at 1:12 AM ^
That song absolutely slaps so no...it doesn't suck.
Now Bama/Crimson Tide taking it for usage? I dunno. We're now a The Killers stadium so I'm not sure there's much to throw stones about.
And the way Tennessee played it facetiously on the overhead after beating Bama in Neyland Stadium last season ('22), it was very well worth however long Bryant-Denny has been playing it.

Just listened to Dixieland Delight for the first time after reading this thread. Totally average, boring, nondescript country song. Best I can say about it. But not as bad as having to listen to Rocky Top 50 times a game.
February 4th, 2024 at 4:53 PM ^
When UM played OSU in 2003 I remember the crowd starting an impromptu “Perry! Perry!” Chant. We won by 14 but it felt different in the stands and Chris Perry left it all on the field that game.
February 4th, 2024 at 5:16 PM ^
I still regret not rushing the field that day. Oh well, made up for it the last two times we beat OSU
February 4th, 2024 at 5:48 PM ^
My roommate and I were freshmen then. We were probably part of the first 20-30 fans on the field. It was incredible. Became a Wolverine football junkie that day.
February 4th, 2024 at 5:17 PM ^
I was at that game! I remember the F-18 flyover - holy crap were they low/that was loud.
February 5th, 2024 at 9:37 AM ^
The chant sent chills down my spine and Perry was amazing that day. But I’ll always remember that game as John Navarre’s redemption.

Michigan hockey against North Dakota in the 1998 NCAA tournament. With a Frozen Four spot on the line, North Dakota was favored, and took a two-goal lead in the second period. But the game was played at Yost, and the Yost crowd picked up that team in a way I've never really seen in person. Michigan won the game in OT, then went on to win the championship. I'll never forget it...
Unfortunately, that game probably helped bring about the end of on-campus regionals in hockey...

I think the "Molly" game against St Cloud in 2002 is what did it for good.

Well, recently, the 49ers over the Lions 7 days ago ............
Tiger Woods at the 2019 Masters.
As regards Game 7 in 2002, the Avs were dead as soon as the Statue of Liberty play happened. Wings would have won Game 7 had it been in Detroit, Denver, Anchorage or Fiji.

I was only a couple thousand miles away but UTL I felt like one of those games.
Like shit were actually gonna win this. Shit we're gonna lose. To holy shit did that really happen?
I think the crowd was all in on that game from kickoff til final tick.
February 4th, 2024 at 6:49 PM ^
We were at UTL with ND fans as our guests -it was a fantastic night…
February 4th, 2024 at 8:43 PM ^
And, ND’s last visit to Michigan Stadium.. in the rain. Well, no need to “encourage” the team - they were quite motivated - and, a game night experience like no other…
February 4th, 2024 at 8:53 PM ^
The crowd singing "I wanna know....have you ever seeeen the rain . . ."
February 4th, 2024 at 5:22 PM ^
Hate to pick at fresh wounds but the 49ers and the crowd were clearly feeding off each other in the second half of the NFC championship last week. It sounded absolutely electric through the TV
February 5th, 2024 at 2:50 PM ^
Great orchestration will do that.
February 4th, 2024 at 5:39 PM ^
I was at the 1997 Iowa game when we were down 21-7 at half. When the team came out for the second half the crowd rallied around them and to this day believe they played a large part in willing that team to a win that day.
February 4th, 2024 at 6:03 PM ^
Good call, Boner.
The Notre Dame game that year was another example. Offense kept giving the ball back, and the defense slammed the door again and again. That was the loudest I had ever heard Michigan Stadium up to that point in time.
February 4th, 2024 at 6:19 PM ^
1997 Iowa
Especially for Brian Griese, who had a miserable first half but had everyone behind him after halftime. I was at that game with my brother-in-law who, at halftime, said, "You know we're going to lose this game, right?"
It's always a delight to spend decades chiding your in-laws.

I’m sure a supportive crowd helps, but it didn’t “will” them to win. This group would’ve won with a hostile crowd or in an empty stadium. 100% of the credit goes to the players.

I agree that the credit goes to the players. But they call it "home field advantage" for a reason. A strong fan base matters. I'll agree to 99.99% goes to the players/coaches.
