Kirk Herbstreit - he's losing it, writing Manifestos on Twitter ...

Yeesh Kirk - chill out.  The world's not going to end if folks disagree with your (Kirk's) take on the Alabama/FSU debate.  You (Kirk) aren't judge, jury and executioner on everything CFB related.

Kirk can't live in two states now. Not sure why he is doing an essay on this. He could have simply said it is my opinion and moved on. Or do what DG does. Block trolls.

Herbstreit was the biggest promoter that Alabama deserved to be in the playoffs of any media personality.

He's factually wrong that Alabama deserved it- if you look at SP+ OSU is a significantly better team than Alabama and Alabama is about equal to FSU.

FSU should have been in by going undefeated.

I thought the committee would put in both Alabama and Georgia + Michigan + Washington-   so it could have been worse!

Why do Kirk and the other CFB committee defenders forgot that the committee has in fact put teams in the playoff that everyone knew was not one of the best 4 and would get beat? Does Cincinnati for example not a ring a bell? And honestly this FSU team, QB or not is better than that Cincy team was. It has generally been a deserve it thing so the committee and it's defenders can say whatever they want but they  decided to change it this year to appease the SEC. The number one criteria should always be results on the field and FSU did not lose any games on the field this year. Best is such a hazy term anyways since teams change so much week to week, there was more weeks than that in which Alabama did not look like a playoff team.

This is, in my opinion, the reason why FSU was pushed out: to make sure an SEC team was in.

Had Georgia beat Alabama, then the field would have been: (1) Georgia, (2) Michigan, (3) Washington, (4) FSU.

But because Alabama beat Georgia, then:

  • An SEC team must get in (the committee had that mandate, I'd be willing to bet)
  • Alabama beat Georgia by too wide a margin to justify Georgia even though they lost, so Alabama must go in
  • Michigan and Washington were in, then Alabama, which left one slot
  • Since Alabama lost to Texas, then Texas must be in to justify Alabama being in
  • Therefore, FSU had to go

And from there all the discussion was around how to spin that decision.

Saw this rant online and waited for it to show up here.

Other than Desmond I find college GameDay to be filled with the worst type of assholes around college sports, and Kirk has long gotten away with being a bit of an idiot who looks fine in a suit and has no compunction about repeating whatever talking points ESPN wants him to say.  So no surprise here.

Facts: FSU beat LSU by a wider margin of victory than Alabama beat LSU. FSU did it at a neutral site while Alabama was at home. FSU beat LSU at full strength while Alabama injured LSU's eventual Heisman winning QB en route to the win.

The committee is supposed to take common opponents into tip consideration when handling ties. The committee quite simply broke their own rules, to get an SEC team in.

Kirk is one of those guys who wants to be liked by people. Someone like McAfee, underneath the jocular facade, has a deep belief in his own superiority as a person, which means he doesn't care if 80% of the people think he's a moron. Then there's guys like Bayless or Smith who intentionally push buttons because they know it's their job to pick an argument no matter what because arguments lead to engagement, engagement leads to good metrics.

Herbstreit isn't like that. He got good press for being the 'balanced, fair, insightful' guy on ESPN's coverage for years and got addicted to that rep. He doesn't just wanna be some loudmouth on TV. It triggers him that a large part of the CFB community looks down on him as a mouthpiece now.

Can we just go ahead now and set the record straight?  According to Herbstreit-ology, Michigan beat TCU in last year's playoff game even though TCU deserved the win (by outscoring us) because we were undoubtedly the better team.  There.  Fixed it.

And Georgia is a better team than Alabama by quite a large margin.  If the committee was honestly looking for the best four teams, rather than just looking to get the SEC champ in regardless of results, then Alabama would be out and Georgia in.

If Alabama and Georgia were to play ten games with this year's teams, I'm betting Georgia would win seven of them.

Questions

Was Cincinnati really a top 4 team headed to the playoffs in 2021 ? I highly doubt they would of been favorites vs Baylor, Ohio state or a rematch vs ND.  Baylor's resume was very impressive even with 2 close losses to top 10 teams. Best 4 or 4 most deserving ?

if fsu only hope depended on a bama and or Texas loss, what was the point of leaving FSU at 4 at the conclusion of week 12 ?

Did he really compare the playoff committee to the BCS?  You may not agree with the formula they used, but at the end of the day you could point at the number in the total column and the two teams with the highest totals were playing for the national title.

The teams are only ranked according to who is best this year, and even then it's only some of the time.  If you asked 100 people who follow college football if Georgia is one of the four best teams I'd guess that at least 90 would say they are.  Yet, there Georgia sits at #6 behind Florida State.

If they are ranking teams by whose best, throw the records out the window because there are a few 2-3 loss teams who have an argument about being better teams than Washington.

I guess he fits right in on twitter then? Alex Jones, trump, a host of other narcissistic lunatics. I don't know why anyone not of that ilk continues to line Musk's pockets.

The thing is --- Herbstreit doesn't have to be a company man.  He brings this upon himself.

There are/have been prominent Color Guys (Chris Spielman when he was McDonough's partner, Todd Blackledge both now at NBC and also when he was at Disney) who simply call the games, and aren't all over the airwaves the other 6 days of the week.

Herbstreit's ego is the problem* --- calling the games isn't enough.  He has to have his opinion amplified the other 6 days of the week TOO.

------

* (I know Joel Klatt is liked a lot here, but his ego is getting out of control too.  He's not content simply calling the games either)

Kirk & Joey both agree privately no doubt that there was no way Michigan was getting FSU. He absolutely has an agenda.

Honestly, the whole thing is a bummer. I obviously really disagree with Herbstreit here but all in all he seems like a decent guy. The amount of shit he gets from crazy fans has clearly gotten to him. He probably doesn’t deserve the kind of harassment he (and most other national media members) gets but the solution here is to just log off.

I don’t think what he’s saying is off-kilter I think he’s explaining his point of view. It doesn’t feel right that FSU was left out, but the rules explicitly allow the committee to leave them out. Kirk is explaining his POV and I think this is a stupid board post
