OT: Someone Standing Up For the Wolverines
No, this is not a Michigan vs. Everybody post!
It's about the mighty wolverine finally receiving threatened species status since only about 300 of these wonderful creatures are believed to be living in the contiguous United States.
It's great to see this beautiful and voracious beast get the protection it deserves.
November 30th, 2023 at 1:18 AM ^
I think it's a veracious beast.
November 30th, 2023 at 5:17 AM ^
Could you verify that for us?
November 30th, 2023 at 6:50 AM ^
Truth...
November 30th, 2023 at 7:25 AM ^
kudos to eddie george for being such a good sport about it. if all buckeyes were like him the rivalry would be so much better (and we could learn a lesson or two, too)
November 30th, 2023 at 10:14 AM ^
I think the players all have that level of mutual respect. It's the fans that get bonkers.
November 30th, 2023 at 12:07 PM ^
You're not teaching me a lesson this week XM. Living in Ohio this is my happy week.
November 30th, 2023 at 12:15 PM ^
ha! glory in it.
November 30th, 2023 at 9:15 AM ^
Voracious - Consuming or eager to consume great amounts of food; ravenous. Having or marked by a strong desire for an activity or pursuit.
Veracious - Observant of truth; habitually speaking truth; truthful.
I'll take 'Both' for $1000 Alex ...what is a Michigan Wolverine?
November 30th, 2023 at 1:38 PM ^
Is it true a lion, gopher, badger and hawk (among others) collectively attacked this usually docile creature and were torn to shreds? Huh what a shame.
November 30th, 2023 at 1:22 AM ^
How ironic the US moves to protect wolverines from extinction, while the BIG/NCAA attempts to move forward to it.
I love this country.
November 30th, 2023 at 1:26 AM ^
Magnificent creatures.
It needs a Ryan Day doll to play with.
November 30th, 2023 at 4:20 AM ^
He already has one. It's life-size and it cries when you beat it.
November 30th, 2023 at 11:05 AM ^
He already has one. It's life-size and it cries when you eat it.
Yeah, he should be passing it any minute now...
November 30th, 2023 at 1:30 AM ^
There was a female wolverine living in Huron County from 2004-2009 but she died. Otherwise, the last Michigan wolverines were trapped to extinction in Michigan by the French in the 1700s/.
November 30th, 2023 at 7:33 AM ^
Probably why we dropped the Sorbonne off of our OOC schedule.....
November 30th, 2023 at 4:10 PM ^
User name semi checks out.
Mother Nature’s Michigan is a fantastic book for all ages. Highly recommended! If memory serves it states that there is no evidence the Wolverine was ever native to Michigan.
As retirement approaches I’m not opposed to moving to Alcona County and starting a Wolverine breeding program. I’m guessing the regulatory hurdles would be enormous.
November 30th, 2023 at 1:45 AM ^
Seth, that Wolverine has earned his All-American shield.
November 30th, 2023 at 5:46 AM ^
pretty sure there are some in the UP and the northern lower
bet
November 30th, 2023 at 6:55 AM ^
I swear I saw one in the wild in the northern lower. It was hard to say for certain, it was moving through tall grass, but the fur pattern on its back, its size, and the way it moved looked exactly like a wolverine.
November 30th, 2023 at 7:24 AM ^
i posted here a few years back, with pictures put up with the help of scanner, about seeing a wolverine on the south edge of our farm (very heavily wooded) and coming across tracks a couple of times in that same area that seemingly had no other explanation (not a badger, coon, etc). the gait, pattern, size, claw marks all seemed to lead to only one conclusion.
November 30th, 2023 at 8:34 AM ^
Do you still have the pictures? Would live to take a look at them
November 30th, 2023 at 8:42 AM ^
i do, but i have no idea how to post them and only scanner's brilliance a few years back allowed me to text him with the pics, and for him to post. i think it was spring of 2020 (yes, that special time) that i posted the OP/words and he added the pics as the first post underneath.
November 30th, 2023 at 8:59 AM ^
2020 you say? I hope the wolverine had the social awareness to be wearing a mask
November 30th, 2023 at 9:32 AM ^
wolverines 'social distance' like few other animals on planet earth.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:32 AM ^
EYB with the dish to XM for the slam dunk dad joke!!
November 30th, 2023 at 8:59 AM ^
XM, do the gait, size and claw marks lead to this conclusion?
November 30th, 2023 at 9:25 AM ^
stover is lucky he has arms left after that one
November 30th, 2023 at 7:14 AM ^
That wouldn't surprise me. It was only fairly recently that we got confirmation of cougars living in state via trail camera, and that's a pretty big kitty.
Also this thread is not OT.
November 30th, 2023 at 7:29 AM ^
hatter, it was probably 15 yrs ago that a friend of ours, a fly-fishing guide up here, had the greatest quote about mountain lions. this was of course years before the DNR would admit it. he was guiding a trip and came upon a rather unique sight. to quote him: "i'm not saying there are mountain lions. i'm not saying there aren't mountain lions. i'm just saying i saw a deer carcass 20' up in a tree"
November 30th, 2023 at 9:44 AM ^
Bigfoot is my bet.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:23 AM ^
'uncle biggie' to you, right?
November 30th, 2023 at 6:08 AM ^
I follow many, many wildlife issues, and one wildlife biologist I listen to a lot and read his books is Dr. Doug Smith. He is mainly known for his knowledge on wolves (wolves are my favorite animal and have worked field research on the species in a variety of ecosystems), but Dr. Smith has decades of research on many other species. His favorite animal is the wolverine, and he has been saying wolverines should be on the Endangered Species List since 2008. This is a longtime coming, and happy the species is finally getting protection in the lower 48.
November 30th, 2023 at 6:18 AM ^
Such an odd mix-furry, cute, but you know they are only a millisecond from ripping your face off. Especially when Eddie George is around.
November 30th, 2023 at 6:53 AM ^
Wow. Winning really does cure all!
November 30th, 2023 at 7:10 AM ^
It needs protection from the Big 10 commissioner
November 30th, 2023 at 8:29 AM ^
Put the B1G commissioner in a room with the wolverine and the commissioner will be the one that needs protection.
November 30th, 2023 at 7:15 AM ^
That Wolverine has a very "U mad bro" expression, must say. Tried to extinct my ass?! See how that worked out? Bet.
November 30th, 2023 at 8:04 AM ^
Wouldn't want to encounter one while walking a mountain trail.
November 30th, 2023 at 8:29 AM ^
Actually it kind of is a Wolverines vs Everybody post...
But honestly we should all know better:
The Wolverine may be low in numbers
The Wolverine may seemingly be endangered
But there is nothing more dangerous than the cornered Wolverine
What will the Wolverine do, when everyone is against it?
Will it cower down?
No I think, it will rise and
Keep fighting
Keep fighting
Keep punching
Keep going
Keep going!
And when you look up in the end
Standing there, again, it'll be
The Wolverine
The Wolverine
(inspired by the Blake Corum post PSU speech)
November 30th, 2023 at 8:59 AM ^
This fine creature should be on stage with petit
November 30th, 2023 at 9:10 AM ^
In a cage match.
What is the warm up? Perhaps a tag team - two Wolverines vs Thamel & Finebaum.
November 30th, 2023 at 9:09 AM ^
This status is very good.
Go Wolverines. Go Blue!
November 30th, 2023 at 9:23 AM ^
They weren't near extinction, but for a couple decades, starting around 2000, they were very much endangered.
Thankfully they have been making a strong comeback ever since.... they seem pretty healthly now, you might even say they are thriving.
GO BLUE
November 30th, 2023 at 9:57 AM ^
Good looking but will beat your ass. Best possible combo.

Great wolverine experience at the Detroit Zoo
I went to the zoo in february with my son's grade school class as a parent group leader. The wolverine was spooked by the beeping of a front end-mover backing up on the walkway adjacent to his environ. It shot up a 40-foot tree in milliseconds. Truely a.....mazing!
Any other time I went to the zoo it was always sleeping in his rock den because it was the coolest place it could find.

Way overdue

Is there still only one in Michigan?
