Four star CB Aaron Scott to announce July 30th.
4 star Jameer Grimsley is announcing this weekend.
Doesn’t look good on either front.
What is it about that article that doesn't look good? It read very level to me.
Apparently his dad’s birthday is July 30th and he is a big Buckeye fan. It was said that if he waited until later in the month that it was bad news for Michigan.
Bummer. Have to think it’s osu.
If he knew he was decided, why wouldn’t he just announce it now? Think it has to still be up in the air somewhat
Scott has also said that he didn’t want everyone knowing where he was going before he announced. It could be a smoke screen to throw everyone off. I’m sure he’s already made his decision and I’m sure he’s already told his dad, so I’m hoping his dad said it was okay to announce on his birthday to throw everyone off.- If you really don’t want everyone to know what you’re doing, why would you make it that obvious?
Mystery solved. Now let's switch our energy and attention to nuanced inferences about the intentions of other 17-year-olds we've never met.
Welcome DHughes, Mr. Glass 3/4 full!
It would be pretty messed up for him to commit to Michigan on his dad's birthday if his dad is a Buckeye fan. It's over. Time to move on.
Sure it would be messed up, but it would also be really funny. We could really use a kid who is that diabolical.
That's beyond diabolical. That's just evil. Only reason to do that would be if he absolutely despises his father.
Well, his father IS a Buckeye fan . . .
Funny story, although not about osu (is about a rival, though).
My daughter is a rising senior in HS. Last year, she received a letter from msu's honors college about coming for a visit, checking out the school, applying for scholarship, etc. I asked my daughter if she'd be interested in checking out msu. Her response? "Eww, no."
Mission accomplished.
OTOH, my good friend is a buckeye and his son is a year behind my daughter in school. We were talking about kids and college and he admitted that if his son got into Michigan and osu, he'd probably want his kid to go to Michigan b/c it's a better school.
You're doing your daughter a disservice if you're not letting her explore that opportunity. I don't like MSU from a sports rilvalry perspecitve, but it's still a good school. If she were to get significant scholarships that took a burden off you as a parent or off her future student loans, wouldn't that be worth it?
Or if his Dad is in on it. He wouldn’t be the first commit whose father is a big Ohio State fan.
If you love your kid and he wanted to commit to the defending Big Ten Champs on your birthday I think that would be pretty cool.
If he wanted to commit to the hated rival of his father's favorite school, why on earth of all the days he could possibly pick to commit would he choose his dad's birthday? If he truly loved his dad, he wouldn't do that. There is absolutely no reason to commit to Michigan on his dad's birthday other than to stick it to his old man.
At this point the only way Michigan wins this recruitment is if their relationship is strained. Let's all hope for family drama! lol
Personally, I'd be honored if my kid wanted to commit on my birthday. I don't think I'd be affected by the team he chose, especially since I'd likely be previously aware of his decision.
I realize we are talking about OSU fans, though, so YMMV.
"Intent to Deceive" would be pretty cool in this case....
Yeah, but my birthday is also July 30th and he wouldn't let ME down, right?
Let's hope you get a nice birthday surprise 👍
I don’t think anyone knows for sure that it’s bad news but announcing on your buckeye fan father’s birthday certainly gives a vibe
I suggest burgers for Dad's birthday party.
He's going Blue.
Hell if he goes blue we can get subs, it'll be crazy
Read that. He gone. Highlights:
- Oregon was his favorite team growing up
- No one in his family likes Michigan
- "It would be hard to say no to OSU"
I don't see a single thing in the article that gives any hope to Michigan. C'est la vie.
Maybe you're a glass half empty guy,
We aren't the favorite to land either. Both Bryce West and Aaron Scott have always been OSU leans.
Grimsley, from Florida, is always going to be a long shot to play at Michigan.
I hope I'm wrong though. Alabama and OSU are filled with 5 stars whereas we aren't. Freshmen can start if they earn it.
Grimsley sounded like he liked Michigan a lot and we have a very good chance to land him. Also Nichols from Ohio is announcing soon and I think we have a good chance to land him. Also 4-star safety Jordon Johnson-Rubell is announcing and I think we have a good chance at him. I want Scott to commit over any other secondary but now. That he is announcing in his dad's Bday it doesn't sound good. Hopefully it is just a ploy to think OSU is getting him but I am probably doing some wishful thinking.
Grimsley is favored to go to Alabama. JJR is favored to go to Texas. We have a better shot at Nichols, but the insiders all think he is going to Kentucky. It’s looking grim.
This is a good recruiting class overall, but CB is a glaring weakness. We have zero CB commits and appear to be about to strike out on all our top prospects. Staff needs to salvage something quickly because we are way too thin at corner to not get any talented prospects.
While true, nothing is final until signing. He can commit, then flip down the line. If we have a season like we are all expecting, I'm sure we can pull some others back in. Corner is a position I think we should be taking 2 each cycle. Hoping we can keep the 25 corner commit as that would be awesome.
Agreed, Ewald is a really exciting prospect. Supposedly his commitment will be solid if we land Patterson, the 2024 elite safety prospect and Ewald's current teammate. After this current flurry of commitments passes, Patterson and Justin Scott should be our highest-prioritized remaining targets.
We're still a long way from signing day, so hopefully some good CB options emerge, but it worries me that we're struggling to sign elite CBs when Ohio State is reloading with 5-star WRs every season.
OSU has had the best WR room in America the last two years at least. Ask them how that's translated against Michigan.
Yeah, Olave, JSN and Wilson made some circus catches last year, but ultimately it didn't matter. Marvin Harrison Jr. had a circus TD catch this past season. Guess what? That didn't matter, either. Michigan beat them with several three and four star corners.
Not saying Michigan has permanently cracked the code for a Ryan Day OSU team, but we've definitely learned that having five star corners are not necessary to beat them. They are great to have, and yes, you'd rather have them than not. I'd rather have four Will Johnsons than just one. But as long as you can keep OSU in front of you, force them to go the length of the field, consistently take away the big play and frustrate them into having to execute on long drives down the field, you can do enough to beat them.
DJ turners speed had a lot to do with keeping those WRs in front of us. Speed is a great equalizer when talent is a mismatch. Hope we have that.
I’m not saying you’re wrong and that CB shouldn’t be addressed in recruiting, but in this day and age with the portal, in any given year you can probably find a quality starter, or at least a high floor kind of guy, who can transfer in and fill a hole pretty immediately.
Again, not saying this isn’t an issue, but with the new outlet for finding talent (and Michigan has made great use of the portal, by the way), this is not a doom and gloom situation.
Nichols is announcing Sunday. I know nothing about his recruitment, but it’s hard to imagine our staff was aggressively pursuing him and he picks Kentucky. I would assume they were slow playing him, but again, I’m guessing.
247 Updated their rankings and they dropped Jadyn Davis quite a bit. Noland is now ranked ahead of him, but I’ll take the QB who drops in the rankings during shorts and t-shirt season, but rises when the pads are on every single time.
Well that sucks.
This class is an improvement but we aren't a top 5 recruiting school. And with our recent play, we really should be.
Soon.
UGA and Bama have it figured out.
OSU has it figured out recruiting and developing their insanely talented WR's and QB's. OSU under Day, however, has underperformed in the trenches and the secondary per recruiting rankings - I assume he's out after this year with another loss to UM and no National Title.
Our coaching and development is elite and with the new focus on NIL, UM should be a top 5 recruiting machine and in the new playoff with a legit chance to win every year, so long as Harbaugh is around and we have a top tier QB.
Day is 45-6, with 3/4 playoff appearances.
I think it's insane that people think he would be fired if Michigan wins for the 3rd year in a row.
OSU had a completely unprecedented run against us- a perfect storm of back to back HOF coaches for them, back to back terrible hires by us, questionable officiating, and some bad injury luck on our end. 17-2 in this rivalry, in modern times, is unprecedented.
He's lost 3 playoff games, 1 game to #12 Oregon, and 2 games to Michigan. Yes they have a huge talent advantage, but none of those loses are 'bad.' Any talk of him getting fired comes from completely unrealistic fans. Any AD would be insane to fire a guy with that record, and I'll eat my words if it happens, but I say no chance.
Both Michigan losses were blowouts though. ahh how great it is
Hot take: I don’t think it matters. OSU can lose to Michigan (and vice versa) and still make the playoff and compete for a national title, especially when it expands. I think the days are gone where these coaches are judged solely on winning The Game.
Yes, and with the expanded playoff, that's even likelier.
That being said, I'd be remiss if I didn't remind everyone that they backed into the playoff this year because Utah beat USC.
Yeah I think we as fans can still take some joy in beating our rivals and give some banter. But as far as their jobs being on the line, those days are gone.
College football simply isn’t structured the same way it was 20 years ago. Priorities have altered. Coaches aren’t (and shouldn’t be) held to the same standard they used to
That would be refreshing. For 15 years the OSU game was the bane of my existence. If M can win the last three seasons where ‘The Game’ actually matters, that would be nice.
Rivalry will get watered down with the new 12 team playoff, as it basically was last season with OSU backing their way into the 4 team playoff. Such is life.
Day is following Meyer who was 82-9, won a NC and never lost to UM in 6 seasons. So, they have come to think that it is their birthright to win 90% of all games and 100% to their rival along with an occasional NC.
Their last 2 coaches (not including the interim) only lost one game of the last 16 to us. The Buckeye fans look at the recent recruiting classes and top draft picks along with the offseason distractions by Harbaugh to the NFL. As a result, they understandably come to the conclusion that only poor coaching can result in losses to this inferior rival. A better coach clearly would have taken the talent of the #1 offense and pummeled their rival, won the last 2 Big Ten Championships, then strode into the CFP rather than backed into it.
In the mind of a Buckeye, OSU is the only legitimate CFP team in the Big Ten.
There is zero chance that Day will be fired for losing to UM this year. There would be turnover for the assistant coaches, but Day would remain.
You said it well, UM does have a good recruiting class. However, to win a title and not just make the playoffs, UM has to start winning a few 5 star recruiting battles. The current avg player ranking is not going to being home a title unless they have a Joe Burrow or Trevor Lawrence at QB, and they don’t.
I think if we would have beat tcu, we would be closer. There's also the NIL money that other schools are ahead of us on. Alabama, Georgia, and OSU are the top 3 recruiting schools arguably. Teams like Texas, A&M, LSU, and USC are going to always pull in strong classes too, and will continue to do so. I'd put us in that group.
We need to win a playoff game and ideally against one of the schools listed above.
I think we made some gains in recruiting this year based on our playoff appearances and some moves in the assistant coaching ranks like bringing Partridge back. There's only so much you can do when your school's name, image, and likeness efforts are behind other schools. The Big House is cool and the helmets are cool but not many top players are going to sign for less money at Michigan vs. other schools. I honestly think Michigan would be further along in NIL if Hackett, Bill Martin, or even Dave Brandon were still the AD.
You are delusional.
He’s just using the opportunity to shit on Warde. He never passes up on an opportunity like that.
Not to worry. We are one more win vs OSU for the shift to really happen. 3 in row and likely losing their coach, will do it for the posterity.
I dont think they'd fire Day if they lose 3 in a row. They'll give him one more chance with Michigan rebuilding its offense in 2024 and the game being played back in the toilet bowl. As others have mentioned the 12 team playoff will take a lot of pressure off both Michigan and osucks.
