Michigans future at QB
This will require a significant amount of speculation so I’m not looking for answers, just opinions. But we all know the QB situation is vitally important to a programs success and Michigan has an interesting road ahead.
If we are to assume that JJ takes the reins full time, I think it would be unlikely that Cade returns next season. In that case we would have JJ/Orji/Denegal. It’s very conceivable that JJ could leave for the draft after his junior season. So 2024 would likely represent the first intrigue point for UMs QB situation.
Questions: Is Orji a guy that could potentially be a plus Big Ten starter? We know he is athletic, but I don’t know enough about his passing ability to know if he could be “the guy” down the line
What is the latest with the recruitment of Jayden Davis?

I'm morbidly curious about JJ's injury from earlier this year. How fragile is his dominant upper extremity?
September 6th, 2022 at 9:47 AM ^
It was an overuse shoulder injury.

Orji will be a RB or a LB here.
Don't be surprised if Cade leaves next season and ends up at CSU.
September 6th, 2022 at 10:33 AM ^
If football will be his primary focus, I think a (University of Nevada,) Reno homecoming would make a better story.
If he's instead considering value of a graduate degree, he could do better.
September 6th, 2022 at 10:55 AM ^
Not sure if there's insider information here or just speculation.
Cade has legitimate NFL aspirations. For football and a degree he could find much better options.
September 6th, 2022 at 11:02 AM ^
Man, I am no talent scout, but I don't see Cade having an NFL arm. He can't make "all the throws". He has all the character and leadership ability you would want though. I hope I am wrong in my thoughts. I can guarantee you that no NFL team will be consulting me. LOL
September 6th, 2022 at 11:43 AM ^
This reminds me of Jake Rudock in 2015 when he transferred to Michigan. He got drafted by the Lions and was a backup QB. That did go for 5 seasons. So, that's where I could envision Cade's destiny-at best.

Here's one expert who disagrees with you.
First-year Michigan quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss, who previously worked with Lamar Jackson as part of the Baltimore Ravens’ staff, was similarly impressed with McNamara when they met in the spring.
“For everything people are going to say to criticize him, (McNamara) is a guy that’s going to end up playing 10 years in the NFL,” Weiss said on Jon Jansen’s “In the Trenches” podcast in April. “You can say he’s not enough of this, not enough of that, but at the end of the day, he’s really smart, makes great decisions and processes things very fast. His accuracy and arm strength are more than enough to win with.”
This is from a Michigan Daily interview from Sept 2, 2021. I value Weiss's opinion a little higher than just about everyone on this forum.

I mean do you think he was going to bash his own player?.im not saying he was incorrect in his assessment but you have to consider the source on this one.
September 6th, 2022 at 4:07 PM ^
Yeah I’d take that one with a grain of salt. Can we get some insight from an NFL guy that ISN’T his position coach?
September 6th, 2022 at 4:10 PM ^
Cade seems like a perfect 3rd-string/emergency QB at the NFL level.
I mean every word of that as a compliment.
September 6th, 2022 at 9:38 AM ^
Orji will eventually be a TE. Correct, last year for Cade at Michigan.
September 6th, 2022 at 10:04 AM ^
Delete this nonsense.
September 6th, 2022 at 9:40 AM ^
If Cade transfers and JJ goes pro after this season, we’d better be scouring the portal for a QB.
September 6th, 2022 at 9:41 AM ^
JJ is not eligible to declare until the 2024 NFL draft.
September 6th, 2022 at 9:47 AM ^
Transfer portal options seem to be either grad transfer, or someone who doesn't care much about graduating since so many credits don't transfer. So, quite limited.
September 6th, 2022 at 10:24 AM ^
"Caring about graduating" has never been the issue. NCAA requires a certain amount of progress toward a degree for the number of years in school to be eligible. If enough credits don't transfer the kid won't be eligible.
September 6th, 2022 at 4:08 PM ^
It’d be some feat if JJ goes pro a year before he’s eligible to do so…
September 6th, 2022 at 9:40 AM ^
There is no sense in trying to figure this out as there are too many moving pieces...
- Alan Bowman is eligible for 2023
- Davis Warren is currently 3rd or 4th on the depth chart and has freshman eligibility
- The transfer portal (both incoming and outgoing) make speculation almost impossible looking out one year, let alone two
There are dozens of updates from 247, On3, Rivals and MnB on Jadyn Davis. He is months away from a decision but he is coming to visit for the Hawaii game, which is maybe his third visit to campus. Michigan is clearly in the top group (maybe even the leader) but there is a long way to go and Georgia is in the mix so be hopeful but don't get too invested.

Sometimes this board has me shaking my head. We are one game into the season and we're trying to figure out the QB in 2024. Who knows! There could be a meteor that cancels the season (don't look up).
September 6th, 2022 at 10:26 AM ^
Come on nothing could ever cancel the season....oh wait, nevermind.
September 6th, 2022 at 4:09 PM ^
Yeah if you look at pretty much any school and try to project their lineup 2 years down the road, you’re going to find some holes. This seems like a very premature conversation.
September 6th, 2022 at 10:35 AM ^
He is months away from a decision
I was getting the vibe from the recent Michigan Recruiting Insider that that timeline may not 100% be set in stone anymore. He may still take visits but I think a commitment this weekend could at least be a possibility
September 6th, 2022 at 12:10 PM ^
Possible? I guess, but I am not hearing the usual public sources.
If there is a run of CBs on 247 this weekend, then I would get excited.
September 7th, 2022 at 10:53 PM ^
LOL UM Is only OUT on transfer portal because our holier than thou admissions office thinks no credits at any school mean anything at UM. We only do grad transfers. See Ruddock, Jake. Dot even bother to look at any FR SO JR true SR at any other school that everyone else is taking. UM is above that!!!!!!!!!!!
September 6th, 2022 at 9:42 AM ^
Usually the cart goes after the horse.
The only thing anyone knows is that JJ starts on Saturday and both QBs might play. Anything beyond that isn't speculation, it's wild speculation.
September 6th, 2022 at 9:43 AM ^
Our future at QB is rapped in the fortunes of the football injury God, JJ McCarthy making good decisions as well as his incredible athleticism and Jadyn Davis family.
September 6th, 2022 at 10:45 AM ^
Rapped you say?
Im a peanut here, and I’m here to say,
we’ll have to decide our quarterback on another day,
Another day, another dime another rhyme another dollar,
Another chump school Our team is gonna clobber,
JJ and McNamara are taking the pie meanwhile We got an Orji right in front of our eyes
All the QBs we be suiting’, we gonna keep on recruitin’, But when you play 2 of em, your continuity is dillutin’
Ryan Day is scaaaared of me, we built our team and he got his for free,
Let me clear my throat: ah ha ah ha
Sorry…I don’t know what that was, I don’t know what just came over me.

I don't see anyone on roster beyond McNamara/McCarthy as plausible starters in 2024. The Davis Warren hype seems like a bit of an overreaction, and I don't see Orji or Denegal being ready yet. It seems likely we'll bring in a transfer to compete.
Regarding Jadyn Davis, Michigan is in great shape at this point, with Davis visiting this weekend as well. The sooner he decides the better. However, there is the potential for his fall visits to change things, especially if things with Georgia heat up (it seems as if Georgia is targeting Julian Sayin, but either they or Sayin could change their preference).
September 6th, 2022 at 10:05 AM ^
2024 is two years away so it is kind of silly to say none of Warren, Denegal or Orji (all freshmen) can be plausible starters. Especially since the basis of the analysis is one spring game and some supposed insider murmurs.
Players can and do improve - sometimes significantly. Some players regress as well. Way, way, way too early to tell.

No speculation needed. All of the current QBs will leave, some sooner than others. New ones will enroll. Fragile crystal balls unnecessary. Their broken shards hurt the feet of my day.

The portal is the great unknown. It will be interesting to see how highly regarded prospects execute with their new teams. JT Daniels is at West Virginia. Ewers is at Texas. Etc…
How long does it take a “new” QB - first year in a program, to understand and lead / direct an offense effectively?
The biggest challenge, I feel, for true freshman QB’s is reading and adjusting to opposing D’s. And, I believe that’s still an unknown with JJ. Cade seemed to do that well - though, IMO - Cade made several poor deliveries on Saturday, which is unfortunate.
JJ starts Saturday - the team will roll - I want to say, regardless of JJ’s performance. However, with a mobile QB - you’re not too far away from bringing in your #2 - it could just be a stinger - or, a later hit after a slide. Harbaugh mentioned, I believe during the B1G conference call on Tuesday - that he’d prefer to see JJ slide after he picks up a first down.
This Saturday won’t show much. Hawaii’s D is weak. Michigan will run, run, and run some more until they can stop it - and, I don’t think Hawaii will. So, JJ will have a few throws - maybe deep routes for some excitement - and because of the separation the receiving corps should get.
UConn won’t be a test either. And, the first time the team may be tested is Maryland - then Indiana - then Iowa.
Recruiting - the next QB? It’s looking at high school freshmen and sophomores. JJ committed early - which was needed. Not sure which of those talented high schoolers has Michigan high on their radar. We lost two local prospects recently - and, would benefit by an early commit for the future.
It seems like a foregone conclusion that JJ enters the draft after the 2023 season. Maybe he’ll see the benefit of a senior year at Michigan.
Finally, what does Michigan’s O do that is really attractive to a talented high school prospect?
September 6th, 2022 at 10:23 AM ^

Win championships and f--- other people up. My kind of QB is into that more than losing 54-41 to Texas Tech or whatever.
September 6th, 2022 at 10:38 AM ^
1111 - respectfully, if Michigan wins the B1G with a run dominated offense, will that be appealing to a highly rated prospect - either drop-back or dual threat QB? I don’t know the answer.
What I do believe is - Michigan finally has a solid OL. It seems every offensive position group has both skill and depth. So, it should look “very attractive” for either style of QB to lead.
And, I am looking forward to Hawaii this weekend.
Go Blue!
September 6th, 2022 at 2:14 PM ^
Other than us last year, where are these teams that are winning power conferences with run dominated offenses?
September 6th, 2022 at 10:32 AM ^
If JJ does win the job and leave after next year, I'd assume we'd bring in a grad transfer for a year if Orji/Denegal aren't ready (which since I'm not particularly high on either of them I think will be the case). Davis Warren also could still be around and could play in there as well.
We appear to lead for Jadyn Davis and he will be visiting for the 3rd time this weekend. I think a commitment is definitely possible since his old timeline doesn't appear to be set in stone anymore. He's legit and could definitely compete for the job his freshman year. I'd assume the job is his his RS freshman year if we get him
