Patterson taken with first overall pick by Detroit..... Panthers
No idea on who is eligible for the USFL, but this seems like an odd choice

At the least he already knows all the best local golf courses.
February 22nd, 2022 at 7:18 PM ^
Jeff Fisher is the coach, so all they’re aiming for is 7 wins. Maybe the right pick if you look at it that way
February 22nd, 2022 at 7:29 PM ^
Looking at the other QBs that got picked it makes sense he was the first choice, unless you are a big believer in Kyle Sloter or Ben Holmes.
February 22nd, 2022 at 7:31 PM ^
Looking at the QBs taken so far (apparently round 1 is just QBs), I'm not so sure this was as bad as I initially thought:

February 22nd, 2022 at 7:34 PM ^
Well, we were told he'd be a "G in the League"...
February 22nd, 2022 at 7:38 PM ^
But what’s his golf handicap these days?
February 22nd, 2022 at 7:52 PM ^
Hopefully they don’t allow pass rush. Maybe they have to count to 5 Mississippi…
February 22nd, 2022 at 7:55 PM ^
Is the USFL filled with guys that couldn’t make a practice squad? Figured I’d see more notable names in the draft. Regardless, good for Shea!
February 22nd, 2022 at 8:03 PM ^
Salaries for a 10-week season are supposed to be around $45,000. Not bad for a side gig.
Per multiple player sources, USFL player contract details are as follows:
— USFL News (@Newsusfl) February 4, 2022
Training Camp: $600 per week
Practice Squad: $1500 per week
Active Roster: $4500 per week
-Plus Victory bonuses

The Bobby Hebert curse is alive and well
February 22nd, 2022 at 8:22 PM ^
Somehow, I think Bobby Herbert was a better choice way back when….
February 22nd, 2022 at 8:22 PM ^
Good for Shea. He was inconsistent here, but played some great games (2019 against MSU and Indiana stick out).
February 22nd, 2022 at 8:23 PM ^
Territorial, like the original?
February 22nd, 2022 at 8:32 PM ^
I'm not sure if it's just me, but I can't reply to individual posts here today.
But anyway, in response to the person who made the "7-win Jeff Fisher joke." Well, in the USFL, it's a ten-game season! 7-3 is pretty damn good in that context!
February 22nd, 2022 at 8:35 PM ^
We can crap on Jeff Fisher all we want, and somewhat deservedly, but his 1999 Titans put the only three losses on the 14-3 Jags and hung tight with the Greatest Show on Turf in the Superbowl
February 22nd, 2022 at 8:38 PM ^
He’s gonna be a G in the league.
February 22nd, 2022 at 8:42 PM ^
Why??
February 22nd, 2022 at 9:43 PM ^
This makes a lot of sense if they are trying to drum up local enthusiasm. The more former Wolverines the better in my opinion. I will probably make the drive from Atlanta to Birmingham to check out a game this spring. Cheap way to get my young kids some live football watching experience to see how they like it.
February 22nd, 2022 at 10:00 PM ^
Bobby Hebert he is NOT
February 22nd, 2022 at 10:07 PM ^
I would have drafted Sam Mills.
February 22nd, 2022 at 10:08 PM ^
Shea's not gonna be happy when he hears about the fire at Oakland Hills.
February 22nd, 2022 at 10:26 PM ^
Draft TB12 and sort it out afterward for giggles.
February 22nd, 2022 at 10:43 PM ^
I know they are the Michigan Panthers, but it feels like this team will never set foot in the state. If they are going to play all of the games in Alabama, it makes sense for them to be based there too.
February 22nd, 2022 at 11:04 PM ^
'Getting immediately spooked in the pocket and throwing the ball out of bounds' must be worth a lot of points in USFL rules
February 22nd, 2022 at 11:34 PM ^
Congrats Mineral King. Best of luck. Hope both you and the new USFL make it.
February 22nd, 2022 at 11:46 PM ^
Like 98xj I am curious as to whether the draft has some advantage in getting regional players.
And I also can't reply to comments.
February 22nd, 2022 at 11:52 PM ^
Regular season games all in Alabama with playoffs at Canton, OH.
I thought they should’ve gone with the Premiere Lacrosse League model and traveled to different host cities each week. Maybe start the season in April with games in the South, Tampa then Houston and N.O. Work the way North and finish the regular season In Michigan by June.
This would keep the home cities invested somewhat in their teams. And not have to worry about non-existent season tickets.

we'll have to think of a nickname for him. Cajun Cannon can not be used. I wonder if this version of the Panthers will be as good as the old early 80s version. Damn, hard to believe it was 40 years ago since the first version of the Panthers I went to the '83 playoff game vs the Oakland Invaders at the silver dome. The good ole days!
February 23rd, 2022 at 5:48 AM ^
Now we have another another MI pro team without a QB
February 23rd, 2022 at 8:08 AM ^
I kind of look at the USFL as the top rung of semi-pro football right now. If he can also find a spot on an XFL team, he could make decent money and only work about 4 months.
February 23rd, 2022 at 9:21 AM ^
Great for him. One of my favorite players from recent teams. He's our only starting QB with multiple wins over MSU since Chad Henne. Doesn't get enough appreciation around here. Get 'em, Shea!
February 23rd, 2022 at 9:22 AM ^
I hope the MineralKing lights it up in the USFL
February 23rd, 2022 at 9:26 AM ^
Based on the level of talent - so far - in the league, this is probably a good pick. Shea has the talent; ii he focuses on his game, I can see him having success there.
February 23rd, 2022 at 9:41 AM ^
I think Shea can be really good at this level. I think he’s just mobile enough to be quite a problem.
February 23rd, 2022 at 10:18 AM ^
Glad to see Michigan getting a professional football team to root for...hope they do as well as the first edition Michigan Panthers! I will say their pay rate is craptastic...hoping this will lead to something good for SP very glad for him.
February 23rd, 2022 at 11:00 AM ^
I wish him nothing but the best. Hopefully, he becomes the USFL version of Kurt Warner.
February 23rd, 2022 at 11:08 AM ^
I see Paxton Lynch on there too - 1st round NFL pick, 12th round USFL pick (though its not fair given the USFL draft's round/position guidelines).
I have trouble imagining any larger discrepencies in draft round.
February 23rd, 2022 at 11:30 AM ^
Ta'amu (who went second overall) was the near MVP of the XFL and Kyle Sloter was NFL Preseason darling in Minnesota.
I can't imagine how awful a Shea Patterson + Jeff Fisher offense will be but I guess we will find out.
February 23rd, 2022 at 11:49 AM ^
Happy for him, and hope he thrives in the role! (Looks around with disapproval at those making sarcastic comments.) Hope he's gotten more comfortable with those RPOs.
February 23rd, 2022 at 12:34 PM ^
Love it! Hoping he does well in the newly formed league. Most NFL quality qb's are IN the NFL, so they are looking for the best outlying talent and he's up there, obviously.
The Michigan Panthers of old made Bobby Herbert a household name and gave him an NFL career. Hoping it does the same for Shae.
February 23rd, 2022 at 3:14 PM ^
Patterson was a 5 star recruit for a reason, he's got some talent. I think I'd rather have him than throw-God Clayton Thorson, drafted by Houston.
Having a local QB on the team increments my interest a bit. The amazing Michigan Panthers logo, colors, and uniforms help a lot more.
February 23rd, 2022 at 3:42 PM ^
In all seriousness, this is his last chance. I hope he makes the most of it, because until now his career has basically been spent squandering some wonderful gifts due to a lack of work ethic.
February 23rd, 2022 at 3:45 PM ^
Trade a later pick to the Giants Brian Lewerke - he of the 94 yards fame.
February 23rd, 2022 at 4:26 PM ^
I remember Anthony Carter opting to join the Michigan Panthers out of college instead of going to the NFL. Got me to watch the Panthers on tv. The year they won the usfl title I had a panthers long sleeve T-shirt and my football coach wanted to buy it. He said that league will fail soon and that shirt would be worth something someday. Little did I know it is probably the only pro football title I will celebrate in my lifetime as a Michigander.
GO BLUE

can't wait for the Panther chatboards to open up hosted by Mineral King
February 23rd, 2022 at 8:45 PM ^
De’veon Smith to the Pittsburgh Maulers. I remember Mike Rozier was the big pick at RB for the original Maulers. A Heisman trophy winner to the USFL.
