Let's Argue About the Super Bowl Halftime Show
I thought the Super Bowl halftime show was very entertaining, as did the group of 45-55 year old suburbanites that were at our Super Bowl party. The teens and tweens who were there enjoyed it, too.
The reaction on social media, however, seems to be split.
I'm seeing younger people complaining about the acts all being old or "washed up."
Also seeing complaints from the type of people who think only classic rock bands should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
What say you?

Maybe?
February 14th, 2022 at 10:08 AM ^
PERHAPS!
February 14th, 2022 at 10:39 AM ^
I say the phrase "What say you" should never be used again. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard, but maybe that's just me.

I say the phrase "maybe that's just me" should never be used again. But maybe that's just me.
Also, I'd like to contribute to the enlighting string before Mr. T. Wolverine veered us away: Comme çi, comme ça.

“Ci” does not take a cédille. It’s only used in the ca/co/cu pairings, as those otherwise indicate a hard c sound.

Hang up and listen is tired.
I’ll hang up and listen.
February 14th, 2022 at 12:16 PM ^
Agreed…
Ending with that or, “thoughts?”
February 14th, 2022 at 9:21 AM ^
I enjoyed it. Kendrick Lamar is neither old nor washed up, but I felt very old and washed-up when my 9-year old asked me who Dre and Snoop were.
February 14th, 2022 at 10:02 AM ^
I didn't watch it, but I heard several people complain about the fake audio of cheering and CGI of flashes that just somehow didn't look genuine.
February 14th, 2022 at 2:55 PM ^
People at the game said that the crowd was super into it, so I'm not so sure that the audio was fake
February 14th, 2022 at 10:12 AM ^
Don't worry you're not old! Just a bad father who has not properly educated his children
February 14th, 2022 at 11:56 AM ^
Strange cuz I thought Lamar was the least entertaining act of that show. Dre killed it. Snoop and Eminem were good. MJB was alright.
February 14th, 2022 at 1:31 PM ^
pretty much this
February 14th, 2022 at 9:22 AM ^
I thought it was okay. It was indeed entertaining, but it's also a safe choice to bring in acts singing songs that people in their 30s and 40s will remember fondly from their youth.
February 14th, 2022 at 9:40 AM ^
Marketing is all about knowing your market. Who is spending and making the big purchases right now? 30-40 year olds.
Let's go back 14 years. Who was spending and making the big purchases at that time? 30-40 year olds. Who played the Super Bowl and was well-received? Tom Petty
When you choose the Super Bowl entertainment, you need to try to get people from the city that is hosting and people that will entertain the people who spend the most money.
This show was an A+. I only wish they would have had a hologram of Tupac appear on Dre's piano during that portion. I may have cried.
February 14th, 2022 at 10:05 AM ^
Agree with the A+ and I was fully expecting the Tu Pac hologram as well. Could have done without upside down 50 cent and Kendrick Lamar.
February 14th, 2022 at 11:46 AM ^
Yeah, I just felt bad for 50. He sounded pretty bad.
February 14th, 2022 at 12:08 PM ^
He didn’t look great either. Yikes.
February 14th, 2022 at 3:53 PM ^
Ha, yeah, I didn't want to say it because people get old and gain weight and I certainly don't look as good in a traditional sense as I did in my 20s and it should be about the music anyway buuuuut yeah....
February 14th, 2022 at 3:36 PM ^
LOL forgot 50 was in the show until I read this.
February 14th, 2022 at 1:39 PM ^
I could have done without 50. I, however, will hear no Kendrick slander. There are very few current hip hop artists I will defend. Kendrick Lamar certainly is one of them.

I was at the SB when Petty played halftime, was disappointed before game, but he rocked. As a Pats fan, I'm still in therapy from that game, Tyree and end of the perfect season. Sometimes we get a huge surprise. Bitched that Bon Jovi didn't play halftime in NY, went with Bruno Mars instead. What did we get, a HOF halftime show, so who knows? Last night was good. Come on man, who among us wouldn't want to hang with Snoop for a night??
February 14th, 2022 at 10:51 AM ^
I'm not sure I could handle the contact high for a complete night
February 14th, 2022 at 11:12 AM ^
Yep, and this goes for the advertisers too. The whole night was basically an ode to the 90s and 00s. Nostalgia for 35-55 year olds:
Austin Powers
Sopranos
Eugene Levy (and Stifler's mom separately?!)
Arnold
etc.

CABLE GUY!!!!

Who is spending and making the big purchases right now? 30-40 year olds.
I would just say 30+. I don't think people necessarily become frugal at age 40. That's entering midlife crisis territory.
February 14th, 2022 at 11:45 AM ^
As it always has been, so shall it be
February 14th, 2022 at 1:44 PM ^
Tupac wasn’t from LA. A hologram of Nipsey Hussle would’ve been better
February 14th, 2022 at 1:53 PM ^
I would have loved Hologram Nate Dogg at the end of "The Next Episode" especially if he'd sung the "hey hey hey hey / smoke weed every day" part because what are you gonna do, fine a hologram?
February 14th, 2022 at 2:55 PM ^
They did a 2Pac song though, which is one of the most iconic California themed songs ever. Would have made a lot of sense to incorporate him into it (although they only did Dre's opening verse, and not tupac's).
And while 2pac wasn't born in California he moved there at age 17 (and to LA at 24) and spent the prime of his career in LA under the Death Row label with iconic LA songs like To Live and Die in LA and was the face of west coast rap for much of the 90s.
February 14th, 2022 at 3:46 PM ^
And what. No Run/DMC?? The original icons of rap.
I used to hang with them in the grandstand at Aqueduct Racetrack. They lived nearby and loved the ponies. Damn, that was more than 30 years ago.
February 14th, 2022 at 9:23 AM ^
I didn't watch it, as I've never watched any in the past. Not protesting or anything, I just have zero interest in watching halftime shows.
February 14th, 2022 at 9:47 AM ^
That's kind of the camp that I'm in. I used half time to clean up the food and start the dishwasher. Let the dogs out and make a head call.
Not much interest in the halftime show.
I will say that I thought Mickey Guyton was amazing with the National Anthem. She nailed it. Best since Whitney if you ask me.
February 14th, 2022 at 10:38 AM ^
I can't remember ever watching the halftime show. They've never interested me. We had 10 inches of lake effect snow on Sunday, ending right about game time. That's when I fired up the snow blower and cleared out the driveway.
February 14th, 2022 at 11:34 AM ^
And let's not forget who started soulful renditions of the national anthem, b/c it has a Michigan / Detroit connection: José Feliciano at the Tigers World Series in 1968.
Naturally, he was savaged for being unpatriotic, not a true American, etc. But he set the template that now seems normal—and his version seems tame.
February 14th, 2022 at 11:49 AM ^
Worth noting about José Feliciano's now famous performance is who selected him - Ernie Harwell

Harwell, you old hippie!
February 14th, 2022 at 11:35 AM ^
I agree on Mickey Guyton - I went back to the intertubes and rewatched Whitney's rendition...holy crap, I forgot how great she sang it. Honestly, they should just replay that at every Super Bowl. Simply incredible.
February 14th, 2022 at 10:07 AM ^
Same. I don't need/want a concert with my football, thank you very much. I pause the live action just enough that I can fast forward through that stuff.
February 14th, 2022 at 10:13 AM ^
As an alum of the Michigan Marching Band I take incredible offense!
I, however, played cards during the Super Bowl halftime show. If you can't bring in a REAL band, such as the MMB, don't bother.
February 14th, 2022 at 10:34 AM ^
At the game I'll watch the marching band, especially over "entertainers".
February 14th, 2022 at 10:42 AM ^
Was that during halftime of SB 16 at the Silverdome? I was in the Trombone section that year as well.
February 14th, 2022 at 10:42 AM ^
SB 16 featured Diana Ross singing the National Anthem.
February 14th, 2022 at 10:43 AM ^
I'm typically in this camp, but Eminem, Snoop and Dre were enough to pull me in. Next year I'll probably go back to not caring...
February 14th, 2022 at 10:56 AM ^
Same...halftime is drink and food refill and bathroom break time
February 14th, 2022 at 9:23 AM ^
50 looked chubby and he’s not from LA which is I suppose why Dr Dre was relevant. Em we know isn’t either. The Game should have been there if that label was part of the theme ....being from LA
Snoop is still in beer commercials so clearly he can play anywhere still. Mary sounded bad but it was fine and it being the first hip hop act it was a safe way to go
February 14th, 2022 at 9:27 AM ^
I'm not sure about Mary J Blige, but I think the other artists were produced by Dr Dre and/or NWA back in the day. I know that Snoop and Eminem were, for sure.
