You can hold players…

You can hold players indefinitely and drop whenever you'd like (I'm amazed that someone still has DJU on their roster!).  College players count against a roster of 30, and you can have up to 10 of them.  There's for sure some risk/reward - if you wait until players make the NFL, odds are another owner will have identified them correctly (there's 14 in this league), but you always run the risk of holding a roster spot for a guy who doesn't work out.

Chanukah Sameach, and thank you for everything you've done for this community.  Times like this where everyone pulls together emotionally/spiritually/financially/etc. are a big part of what makes all the angst and stress of fandom worthwhile.

Something very Kingkiller in Blake Corum taking "one [single,] perfect step."  And I love that I don't know if that was intentional.

Personally, I like the idea of "let's call out the guy we appreciate on the other side."  Wouldn't mind that being a recurring feature - "maybe don't root for him, but here's the guy we just can't bring ourselves to hate."  One of my best friends is an OSU fan who feels that way about Sainristil.

Really, everyone's polls are…

Really, everyone's polls are wrong right now - that's why they change as the season goes on.  I see nothing wrong in principle with someone who writes about sports for a living having a hunch that a particular team is going to surprise lots of folks (although I question the wisdom in this specific instance).  Ad DoubleB says, this should all come out in the wash once you aggregate it all up.  The bigger concern is if you see massive systematic biases - all the ESPN or southeastern journalists boosting SEC schools over all others, or FOX and midwestern journalists boosting the B1G.  There was evidence of gaming the system back when folks were debating the wisdom of the BCS - I think it kept OK State out of the National Championship game 10-15 years ago...

Favorite quote (on…

Favorite quote (on Northwestern of all places!):

"Looking at this team from year to year, it's pretty much a broken record now: You know exactly what you're getting on defense, and you respect the hell out of it, and you have no idea what's coming on offense, but chances are it will be pretty bad."

If you're willing to walk 45-ish minutes, I highly recommend Town Center Market - convenience store, bottle shop, and liquor store that also happens to have 30 taps (and an outdoor patio if weather is nice).  Great place to get a flight (or two).

Curious - any chance of adding links to previous hello posts for the rest of class chart?  As I look at this there are a bunch of players whom I think I remember - or else definitely forgot about - so it would be amazing to have a way to refresh my memory on them.  Hope that wouldn't create a ton of extra work for all of you?!

I say Kenneth Grant's "in a nutshell" should be changed to "Mastodon," just so we can work back in a reference to metal (and include their album artwork? is that legal?).

Oops - good catch.  Clearly, I'm just too much of a traditionalist.

I'd be more inclined to say…

I'd be more inclined to say cap at 3 than cap at 2.  Right now, for example, the conference breakdown for the top 12 in the AP is 3 each for SEC (Bama, Georgia, and Florida) and B1G (Iowa, Penn State, OSU), 2 for the Big 12 (Oklahoma, A&M), and one each for the Pac-12 (Oregon), G6 (Cincy), ACC (Clemson), and Independents (ND).  Capping at 2 would leave out #10 OSU and #11 Florida in favor of #15 BYU and #17 Coastal Carolina, passing over Ole Miss, Iowa State, and Arkansas.

Early season weirdness (and schadenfreude) aside, I'm not sure that's a trade I'd make.  Purely selfishly, there are three B1G teams we'd have to leapfrog.  But I agree that some variety of cap seems fair.

Brian,

Everything that…

Brian,

Everything that needs to be said (get well, it's OK to not be OK, your community is here for you even if you need to step back fully and permanently) has been said by someone in some way or another, but for once it's good to be part of the chorus just saying "this."

And as cliche as it may be, I have to add: "It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened?  But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why.  But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back. Only they didn’t, because they were holding on to something…That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”

Thank you, Seth!!!!  I hope…

Thank you, Seth!!!!  I hope that all's OK with Brian and that you can get back to a reasonable workload soon - but other than the change in byline you've kept things running without a hitch.

I'm wrapping up a deployment as a civilian researcher (no, really), and one of the officers I've run into is Lieutenant Commander Shun White, who still holds Navy's single-game rushing record.  He got permission to camp with the Patriots - sadly, it didn't work out, but he's doing alright for himself out here - good guy.

Right now, I see posts about…

Right now, I see posts about Gray, Hawkins, and Cheeseman.  All three need to be investigated; the charges against Hawkins and Cheeseman are particularly vile, particularly given that Cheeseman has four separate people reporting him.  Yes, anonymous reporting can be abused, college football fans (UM included) are verifiably insane, and blah, blah, blah.  That's why you investigate.  But right now I am resigned to the very real possibility that we have at least two rapists on the team and a third player who needs to attend serious sensitivity training; and frankly, anything I'm feeling is irrelevant next to the need for justice.  If you dunked on OSU for Zach Smith, you cannot be anything other than horrified at the mere possibility (and more like the likelihood) that this is true.  I'd rather lose games and have a team I know I can root for.
