My firm declared it a day off. I'm a partner so it doesn't matter for me.
Your associates & support staff must love you.
Yeah - not our company.
In addition, I am betting nobody is getting Columbus Day off this October. Just a guess...
Taking a holiday away is not a good way to make people support a cause...
Maybe change it to giving Halloween off every year instead. Or this year the day before.
I suspect that could happen. They won't dare take away Veterans Day and Columbus Day is the most vulnerable.
That will not happen, although I could see it being renamed under a different administration.
We only have 10 paid national holidays in this country, and there is no way people are going to stand for giving any one of them up.
My bank is closing early on Friday and giving everyone a few hours of PTO. First time that's ever happened for this particular day.
Same. And I work for a financial institution based in the Deep South, which is suddenly (and admirably) trying to make a much better effort here.
Moving Columbus Day off to election day off would be great.
Feel like they'll just rename it. Indigenous Peoples' Day has been a "counter-holiday" for a while now, and it has become an official holiday in some places (e.g. DC, Phoenix). However, a few cities have just cancelled it -- like Columbus, OH, which just turned Veteran's Day into a city holiday.
Self-employed, there are no days off.
Might take the day off twitter though.
Good idea donald
Not I, said the moose :( We did get a company-wide email mentioning the holiday and encouraging people to use PTO or holiday exchange if they were so inclined. (FWIW, we don't get Columbus Day, either, but do get Veterans' Day due to the nature of our work).
I am off, but due to furlough.
Dr. - Not sure who negged you. Didn't know we were discriminating against furloughed people now ("Antifur"?). Tough crowd. Hope you can get back to work soon.
And somebody negged you. I off-set it. Some people are cunts.
+1. Some people really are.
Hang in there. You'll get unfurloughed or find something better.
Ask him if he wants to be a Mod.
Nope. Heart surgery doesn’t sleep
Humble brag
Perhaps they are the one in need of heart surgery?
How so? I work in heart surgery, and we didn’t have the day off. I could be an orderly, a nurse, a scrub, a mid level provider, or a surgeon, or another position. I guess I don’t see how there was a brag in there, or what I would have been bragging about
Me. Then again I haven't worked in three months.
Hang in there. You'll find something.
just waiting for Whitmer to open things up so I can go back to work.
I took it off, but to golf with some buddies at Dunham Hills. I'll have a celebratory drink to commemorate the day
I literally just found out what Juneteenth is this morning...prior to 2020 was this discussed and I missed it?
It's been a thing in black communities for a long time.
Yes and no - from what I've observed in my years/travels it was much more of a thing in the Southern black communities than in the North (not to say it was absent, but not nearly as celebrated).
Curious how much events in the last few months have pushed it into mainstream consciousness, but such is life in these United States.
It was new for me too prior to Tuesday this week.
In VA there was an attempt earlier this year or late last year to make it a holiday, but it died in committee.
I suspect it will get passed this year.
It's not easy being a bill - is it?
It's always struck me as a bit odd that June 19 became Emancipation Day --- September 22, 1862 is the day of the Emancipation Proclamation itself, and June 19, 1865 was only noteworthy in Texas at the time anyway.
But it is how it has evolved.
Legal vs. practical. The Union having military control of Texas was the practical end of slavery in the South. Though slavery didn't actually end until the 13th Amendment was ratified, freeing slaves in some of the border states that stayed loyal.
https://www.juneteenth.com/history.htm
this is a good summary. sounds like the reason it evolved around the texas announcement is that those freed slaves were 1) super surprised by it and 2) flooded out to surrounding states to either escape former masters or to try to find family. so, that flooding out to surrounding states made it so a larger region was celebrating that date as significant.
i had never heard of it until the Atlanta episode of the same name.
Same. I had never heard of it before this year.
I came here to say this too...had never heard of Juneteenth until the recent uproar when Trump scheduled a rally for that day.
Needless to say, I have never gotten the day off from an employer, and have not heard of any change in that regard for this year.
Yes. Both my current company and a former company are offering it off. I work in advertising.
What is Juneteenth? I've seen it mentioned places but with no details.
Link - there ya go
I'm off. Looking for someone to golf with.
I have it off as well. We will see if I actually have to work though.
Done at 2pm tomorrow, nice working for an organization with a social conscience...
We are able to take the day off if desired. I’m not so that my Black teammates can do so without worrying in case our clients need to reach out.
My company does it right. We have the core traditional holidays off: New Years, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, and Christmas with a couple days around it. We then get two flexible holidays - you can take two days off a year to celebrate any two holidays that are important to you you. Drink on the Lake is a well-known hillbilly holiday that I proudly celebrate every year.
I'll bet a lot of white people didn't know what it was until Black-ish did an episode about it.
Atlanta for me.
and well. i'm white-ish.
I was aware of the phrase prior to the Black-ish episode but was not aware of its true meaning prior to that. Black-ish is, IMO, is a great show. I have always loved shows that could entertain me while also expanding my awareness. ABC recently reran the episode title Juneteenth, along with another episode entitled "Hope" back to back recently as both became topically important again. I also recommend the episode "Lemons" as well. Quite frankly I enjoy all three of Kenya Harris' current offerings, Black-ish, Mixed-ish, and Black AF.
Also correct me if I am wrong RGard, but didn't VA already declare it a state holiday?
I think this is a good trend we are seeing. The date should be honored and celebrated. With that said, my company is still working, end of month and end of the quarter are next week. Whomp-Whomp.
I have it off. Glad to see this kind of day is being recognized, and I'm trying to take some time to learn more about it myself. My company is offering a lot of resources to educate ourselves in this arena.
I also can't pretend I won't be using tomorrow to go on a Last of Us II binge.
wait, Last of Us II is out? Guess it's time to get back into video games.
