OT - Lions

The emotion most associated with watching the Lions has changed from pain  to enjoyment. Weird. Very weird.  I’m 54 and just saw a stat that this is the first time since 1970 they’ve gained 350 yards in their first five games.

Thoughts?

The legend has it that the Lions won the championship in 1957 then wound up trading Bobby Layne in 1958, their All Pro QB.  He literally put the curse on the Lions stating they would never win again after trading him to Pittsburgh.

One thing to note, Bobby Layne was a party animal at a time when it was truly acceptable but the new coach who took over was not endeared with the off the field incidents.  Thus the potential reason for the abrupt trade in '58.  But again Layne on his way out, "cursed" the franchise stating they would not win again for another 50 years... (Unfortunate it has extended to 65 years...)

Not to tarnish a legend but this is beyond tarnishing:

Former Packer Paul Hornung, who played against Layne in the 13-13 game revealed in his 2004 autobiography “Golden Boy”:

“In the second game of the 1958 season, Layne did something peculiar against our team in Green Bay. The Lions were 3 ½ point favorites and as Layne told me later, he had bet on them to cover the spread. With the score tied at 13 late in the fourth quarter the field goal team came onto the field to win the game but Layne shushed them off. Layne then overthrew his receiver in the end zone (note: this fact is wrong)and the game ended in a tie. It was obvious he had bet on the game. Layne later told me he was confident he could get a touchdown and win the game that way. Bobby gambled more than anybody who ever played football period. How did the league go all those years without ever getting him?”

Investigative reporter Dan Moldea wrote in his book “Interference: How Organized Crime Influences Professional Football” that Detroiter Donald “Dice” Dawson, a convicted gambler, told him that he had placed bets with Layne and that Layne “had fixed games or shaved points in no fewer than seven games over a period of four years while Layne played with the Detroit Lions and later the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

In Layne's defense of his alcoholism: Karras said that he heard that Layne’s lack of sleep was due to fear of sleeping, because when Bobby was a kid he lost his parents in a car accident and spent an entire night stuck in the overturned car with their dead bodies.

Lions have an argument to make that they are the best team in the league right now. San Fran losing today and obviously the Eagles are out there but the case can be made. Who would've thought!

Branch and laporta are good players, certainly better than the 2 first rounders, but they were both projected to the second round and would have been picked there regardless of whether we screwed up our first round picks or not.

laporta was actually projected to go much later.

the Gibbs pick feels like a darko pick to me where much better players went later and players who were projected to get drafted higher.

Projections don't mean shit. Gibbs was going to go at 15 if the Lions didn't take him at 12, and Campbell was going to go somewhere in the 20s. Both of that information was leaked by teams after the draft, unlike the bogus "projections" made by idiots like Mel Kiper (if he's that good at evaluating talent, how come he's never been a GM anywhere? Oh wait, Matt Millen literally picked his best available player every single year and look how that turned out...)

You realize the projections are made by people who aren't good enough to actually work in the NFL, right??   Same as the recruiting rankings, the coaches have a way higher budget to hire the best people (coaches) to actually analyze potential players, rather than hire guys who have a journalism degree and get excited writing about recruiting.
